Pakistan's economic standing

Well one thing in which we Pakistanis are the undisputed world champions is “complaining”.

Complaining just about everything, the street is dirty, the school is far, the house is only one KANAL, the business is yielding a profit of only few millions instead of billions as they were anticipating… and God knows what.

I have seen this complaining since my childhood, everyone complaining just about everything. Even though the situation was like million times better than today.

And no one is willing to do ANYTHING to sort out anything (rare exceptions excluded). If you believe the economic “experts” on sold out media, you would think Pakistan is one of the worst countries in the world in economic terms. So just curiously I thought to search and see where we stand today. Here are the results:

  • In nominal GDP Terms Pakistan stands at number 47 ahead of Romania, Bulgaria, New Zealand, etc.
  • In GDP PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) terms, Pakistan stands at number 27 ahead of Malysia, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium and so on.

(source IMF, World Bank mentioned at Wikipedia)

So if despite the horrible neighborhood (India, Afghanistan) we live in and despite worst of the turmoil a country can face, if we still manage to do reasonably well in economic terms, I just wonder what potential do we have if we had a normal security situation in our country?

All in all, I can say with full confidence, this country is blessed with everything: all sort of weather, great soil for agriculture, mineral resources, great geo politic location, warm waters, young population, all sort of landscape from highest of mountains to driest of deserts…

One thing that seems to be missing is the vision and dedication to our country at leadership and sadly at individual level as well. I think even if we start today believing in ourselves and instead of complaining start giving back to our country, we can make it heaven on earth for our next generations.

Long live Pakistan, we can never ever say enough Thanks to Almighty for giving us such a great country!

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

Before starting to throw numbers like 47 or 27. You didn't bother to count the public debt & population. For example: Romania population stands at 21,466,174 (2010) while Pakistan is over 180 million.

Also next time count the geographic size of each country you compared.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

we are still in top 30's!! ... and lets not forget that we just had two natural disaters .. recently!! 2005 and 2010!

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

Great so according to your figures we are better then Swiss now.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

Absolutely rangoli, you are right. And I was really very positively surprised to see that despite all the mayhem going around, we are still not doing that bad!
This just shows we need to get our act together and we have all the indicators to achieve the phenominal growth rates.

PS. Please ignore this Pakistan hater whose sole purpose of life is to **hate Pakistan **and anything about it. I in fact feel pitty for him. He has serious psychological problems and can not sleep at night unless he has typed his hate tirades against Pakistan in at least a dozen posts a day or so.

So just ignore him.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

I just wish that there weren't any TTP in our country so that the foreign investors without the fear of getting blownup could invest around here, creating job opportunities, I wish our politicians were a little less corrupt, I said "less" because they can do all the corruption they want, but make it to such an extent that it doesn't harms our economy... I wish all the wealthy people, landlords, highly paid anchors, highly paid professionals, doctors, engineers and all on job Pakistanis along with all Politicians would pay their taxes in full and valid taxes... well its just a big sigh...

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

How about:

Despite all the mayhem in the country, Pakistan is still under top 30 economies of the world (PPP wise)?

The same indicator is used to put India in the top ten, and all the above problems you have mentioned apply to that country as well.

No one is suggesting that we have the same living standards as Swiss and co. , but we are talking here about the size of the economy measured with internationally recognized indicators and by those international organizations.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

heheh ... gotta agree on tht!!! firenze!! I honestly doubt if you are really Pakistani!!
no offence!! but this is wht it shows from your posts!

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

To me...internationally recognized standards are for fools and I can simply throw them into dustbins...

PS: Those standards are bound to tumble & crumble...this man can guarantee you... :D

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

^^ And that would mean, all this is just an illusion? USA being the largest economy? China being the second? Japan third.. Netherlands being the...

hmmm, how would you measure an economy?

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

you comparing wrong, what you should be comparing per person or per capita, you cant compare size of economy in that terms Pakistan is 127 and 136 in other list. I wish to Pakistan to be in top 10! but $41000 purchasing power of a swiss cant be compared to paltry $2700 of Pakistani

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

Going by that list, the top economies of the world would be:

  • Monaco
  • Luxembourg
  • Qatar

Now tell me honestly, does that make any sense?

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

:smack:

how about you take some economic lessons? That chart is comparing “purchasing power parity”.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

I am not a big fan of (inter)national statistics...but in Pakistan...every evening...some 40% of the population (living below poverty line) go to bed with insufficient food intake or malnutrition...now I wonder if someone can explain to me the economic standing of our beloved country: Pakistan...hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

^^ Please read Pakistan Economic Survey 2010-11.. this will tell you how GOOD economy has been in last three years, where no development project completed, where nothing has been done to increase the inflow of dollar, where no new markets has been found for exports, where the country has suffered with energy crisis, worst in 60 years, where country has been hit by the flood and nothing been done to re-develop those areas and people living there...

please do not buy the words of Hafeez Sheikh, he is biggest liar of all, he is selling poison with candy toppings... Pakistan economy has great potentials but has been badly managed...

PS: Kuwait and Qatar have officially banned Pakistanies, and there is no action been taken by Govt of Pakistan, some says, Kuwait banned it after the Visits of PM Gillani and President Zardari because they asked Kuwait Govt to do it....otherwise how come Kuwait Govt can ban it with in 15 days of these two top personalities of Pakistan visiting Kuwait

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

The basic need of a man is the food self-sufficiency...I think its the first priority of Pakistan people and the governing bodies to work on that...when people have a balanced nutrition...they can start to think better & feel good to educate themselves for higher education and broadening their horizons...that process will require a bit of health maintaince...to achieve all those...you have to eliminate the distracting elements like the things not so peaceful...lekin jab insaan ko kuch mil jata hai tou woh diwana ho jata hai[Al-Quran]...and there starts the beginning of fall from the rise...so no one can escape from the viscious cycle...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

On one hand you say, you are not a big fan of statistics and on the other hand you are taking the help of same statistics to suggest that more than 40% of Pakistan's population is going to bed with insufficient food.

Or what else is the source of this information, if not some sort of (inter)national statistics?

We ALL KNOW what problems Pakistan is going through, and we ALL know that we need to correct them. But we don't have to repeat the problems in every thread. Just for a change we can also try to look at the positive side and this is the whole purpose of this thread.

As it is said if you believe in your dreams and in your vision, only then you can achieve something. But if you only want to focus on the negative side, and only want to see the glass half empty... nothing can help you.

Re: Pakistan's economic standing

/\ I don't think writing on the net will solve any problem but going into the field physically ( identifying the problems and trying to find solutions) might do that... :D

Re: Pakistan’s economic standing

The fact that Pakistan is put ahead of countries like Switzerland and Belgium, shows that GDP alone can not be used to measure development of country. Because GDP does not look at the population of a country. For example, a country of 1000 people making $10 is not the same as a country of 50 people making $10.
A better indication of development of a country is Human Development Index.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.

In the HDI list of 2010, Pakistan’s number is 125 out of 169 countries. The list is available on the same wikipedia link.

I want Pakistan to be no. 1 in everything but I would not like to fool myself. Pakistan has long way to go. The first thing we need to do is to improve security situation and eliminate extremism. Development and insecurity are inversely proportional.
