I was reading Cricinfo and came across a bit about Andy Caddick. Apparently Pakistan really sledged him while in England in '01. Anyone know about this, I’ve never heard of it.
Some of you guys have been cricket fans for a while, I was just curious, anyone know about this?
1968
When he’s hot he sizzles, but too often Andy Caddick, who was born in Christchurch of English parents on this day, is consumed by an exasperating listlessness. Caddick has everything a fast bowler could want in his locker: height, bounce, plentiful seam movement, late swing, and the devil needed to induce spectacular collapses - 5 for 7 as West Indies were routed for 54 at Lord’s in 2000, four in an over two Tests later at Headingley, 3 for 4 in 13 balls and then 3 for 0 in five as he took 7 for 46 at Durban in 1999-2000, which made South Africa follow on for the first time in 74 matches. But the feeling persists that Caddick is a bully who gives but can’t take. Against Pakistan at Old Trafford last in 2001 he was sledged into submission and then sulked after a calculated new-ball assault from Abdul Razzaq. His batting suffers from the same malaise - his delirious 40-ball 49 against Australia at Edgbaston the same year was preceded by 57 runs (and no double-figure scores) in 17 innings. He bowled England to a sensational victory at Sydney in January 2003, but an injury then ruled him out for the English summer. Caddick is still seen in some quarters as an outsider, despite being half of England’s best new-ball partnership for 20 years, and few people with over 200 Test wickets have invited quite so much scepticism.
Well we got two fast bowlers who are faster than anyone on the English team today and back then it was Wasim and Waqar and Shaoib so what more you want for Intimidation? Plus if the game was in England most of the crowd would be Pakistan supporters
Speaking of cracking up after sledging how about Pathan bowling a bouncer at Afridi, hitting him and acting like he’s Shaoib Akhter with his 120 km/hr bowling. Of course we all know that what Afridi did after that bouncer nearly ended Pathan’s career. Can you say 12 economy rate in a test match? LOL
no bhai, i’m not talking about the merits of Pakistani cricketers. i’m saying that i can’t understand how an Englishman could possibly take it seriously when it sounds like Apu is calling him a motherf*cker or whatever - same applies for India/Bangla/Lankan teams.
i don’t remember this incident. what did Pathan say to Afridi?
sledging isn’t just trying to be intimidating by giving looks or whatever, it is making comments and remarks - usually negative and/or profane in nature.
if done in Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi between Indians and Pakistanis, then that’s a different story. my point is that any desi cricketer would laugh at some gora calling him a ch*tiya in heavily gora-accented Hindi…similarly, a desi sledging in fobby english would be funny too - not intimidating.
OK understood, I will attempt to avoid the usual indo-pak banter. And yes I know exactly what you are saying in terms of the language barrier that must be present on the cricket pitch.
In fact one wonders how many of the Pakistani players would even communicate with umpires considering how poor there English is. With the exceptions of guys who play regular county crickets of course. The same is'nt true for Indian and Sri Lankan players since they have much better English, Im not sure of Bangladeshis.
Though fact remains that Caddick was sledged somehow so I just wonder what happened since such incidences involving Pakistan are rare from what I know.
