                                             18 are held in an impartial, free and fair manner, U. S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is believed to have told President Pervez Musharraf, when they met in Davos recently.

Confirming that a meeting had taken place between Rice and Musharraf on the sidelines of this year’s World Economic Forum, the U. S. State Department said that Rice told Musharraf to “conduct these elections in such a way that the Pakistani people have confidence in the elections because it is “going to be important that candidates have access to media, that they’re able to campaign, that they’re able to express their views”.
The Daily Times quoted Sean McCormack, the spokesman of the department, as saying that both Rice and Musharraf also “talked a lot about the internal situation in Pakistan and a little bit about the US-Pakistan efforts on counterterrorism.”
When reminded of Richard Boucher’s testimony in Congress on Tuesday suggesting that the US had accepted the February 18 elections as being flawed, McCormack replied that the fairness of an election could be judged by the “level of confidence that the population has in the election that the result reflects the will of the people”.
He added that no election anywhere, including the US, can be perfect.
“What finally matters in the context of Pakistan’s political development is that the people have confidence in this election, and that confidence will be based on a variety of different factors and we shall see how the election turns out,” he said.
Acknowledging that Pakistan is passing through a very difficult period in their political history, McCormack said that Washington retains the hope that Islamabad “can get back on that road that we had seen it on previously, one of increasing political and economic reforms and increasing political and economic freedoms.”

The above says it all. God Bless President Musharaf for taking Pakistan towards a true democratic path unlike the previous so-called elected Pakistani governments.

Neither we want the shameless defeaters of Iraq and Afghanistan...to dictate us....what sort of elections..we should have .....

We are an independent country..and we will conduct elections..upon our choice.....

Just they should care about when the 1,80,000 soldiers..after shameless defeat will find way home..and how to counter the increasing rates of Soldiers Suicides...in Iraq....

True democratic path that Ziaul Haq also gave us. True democratic path where criminals were the seed. True democracy where justice (not the exCJ :p) was first victim. True democracy where leader accuses women of country for lining up for gang-rape so they can seek immigration in other countries. True democracy indeed.

whether you want it or not but its been happening for quite some time now. The US has been issuing orders at Secretary level directly to the "president" and he's been bending over backwards saying aye aye Master

collective dream or selective amnesia?? remember the first time around when he tried to impose emergency - a 2am call from his masters took the steam out of his ambitions. Second time he went ahead but when the swirling danda of US came down hard, had to back off rather timidly.

point being..Pak policy has been affected by external pressures from day one, and everyone has succumbed to pressure.

I did not shy away and I am not defending him, but stating a fact, not only is this the case in Pakistan but many other countries. It is not a justification, but a statement of hwo things have been, how things are and how things will be.

no excuses, jus the truth, may be bitter pill to swallow for all of us. Everthig does not have to be pro someone or anti someone.

it was on the mark, and the point was that other leaders past and present were not going to be above the influence and pressure of US or other forces. You may have not seen it that way but thats how it is. It was illustrative.

how is that a tangent, it is fully an example of my statement that the influence of other powers be it US, UK or KSA is there for all political parties.

Now can we discuss things rather than petty bickering please.
