Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
You are rite about the obsession with ghee PCG. My Nana, two months ago, would not even look at the yellow daal without having a garam garam ‘kaRaka’ of ghee on it right before it was served. He enjoyed the sound of the hot ghee mixing with teh daal, the smell, and finally the taste.
When I pointed this out to him constantly, he turned the topic towards another relative who had to have atleat an inch of ghee on top of his food and was healthy until his death (cause was old age, according to nana) or he would tell me how healthy it is to have ghee and pour some on my food as well!
Two months ago, Nana Abbu had a minor stroke. His blood pressure had always been in the 170/90 range for which he paid no attention and wouldn’t allow us to treat him. Alhamdullilah, he has recovered fully from the incident now.
And guess what? No more ghee! He has changed his diet so much that its amazing to see him gulp down vegie soup with just as much passion as the daal with ghee.
Oh and now he takes utmost care with the timing of his medication plus the measuring of his bp (which happens to be almost thrice a day, lol and not exceeding 140/75). They grow so young as they age. I love Nana Abbu ![]()
Btw, I thought mideast shut down a month or so ago? I may be wrong but I remember reading it in the paper a while ago.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
They shut down their hospital and opened up another bigger one.
Don’t tell me they shut that one down too!

Althea - Pakistan needs doctors like you.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
on what? mideast or you?
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
why me ofcourse :D
BTW, Do you think karachi has better healthcare compared to lahore or islamabad? ... just curious ... don't personally know a thing about it.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
only you can elaborate on yourself.
I dont know much about Islamabad. Cancer-wise, the Shaukhat Khanum hospital is in Lahore and that's the best you can get in the country. They're building a branch in Karachi now. Aga Khan hospital works on international standards, or so I've been told. I went there once as a patient, and they seemed efficient enough. I dont think there is any other hospital on the calibre of Aga Khan hospital anywhere in the country aside from Karachi. I dont think they have branches in other cities, although I'm not positive.
Otherwise, the best hospitals aside from these ones would be less than mediocre by US standards (if you're going to a US med school). But relative to the other clinics being run in the cities, they're a better bet.
There's little regulation overall, and city and national health care policy is a mess. Doctors aren't held accountable for much, which makes the problem worse. I myself know of some doctors who cheated to get their degrees, and also who do not do a great job as a doctor.
The nurses at mideast told us, when my cousin was being born, to leave and head out to Aga Khan hospital, since the doctor was making some wrong decisions regarding the baby's health. As a result, the child is now mentally challenged. And they tried to level a case against the doctor, but he had screwed with the paperwork to cover up his mistakes.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
Lets not forget the excellent diagnosis and treatment at SIUT, Cardio-Jinnah and Liaquat National hospital.
Aga Khan is great AFTER the diagnosis has been made by the 12+ tests they perform before laying a hand on you.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
hmmm ... very interesting
I occasionally toy with the idea of going back to practice there for a few years but the few pakistani trained doc that I've come across have always discouraged it.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
well yeah. cuz they're looking to make money in "dawllars". They'd sell their moms for the green stuff.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
just have a look at this list then rethink what you said about medical treatment
only GOOD ones listed
Lahore:
PIC (Punjab Insititute or Cardialogy)
Shaikh Zaid Hospital
Shaukat Khanam
Jinnah Hospital
largest hospital in South Asia and hugely govt funded but still crowded cause it has every single facility
Mayo Hospital
Services,
Childern Hospital
General Hospital
Social Security Hospital
UCH - United Christian Hospital
CMH - Combined Millitary Hospital
Now the posh ones
Sergimed
Doctors hospital
Shareef City
Akram Complex
and many more smaller ones.
for Isb the big guns are
Shifa International
Al Shifa
Pakistan Medical Complex
CMH
Aga khan is no doubt a very good hospital but many of above do match its standards too
so dont make judgments on your lil knowledge.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
Hey by the way …have u ever thought …why ur mom and dad migrated to USA..if it was not for dawllars…???
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
PCG.. your comment needs alot of thought from you. Please think before you say. Claiming that they would do anything to come to US is a very cheap stand. By your comment, i can assume that your dad sold his mom for the green stuff? (don’t take it personal, but just think what you just said!)
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
Brings into mind a picture of my ever expanding chachis. Also my SIL expanded 3 fold after getting married because her in-laws always use a lot of ghee in their cooking and then eat puri/parathas all the time.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
Punjabi ethnocentrism, I see, Shak kills. Good for you - I never have heard of these hospitals. I'm sure they're great though.
Ansoon and Goliko. Point noted.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
Bibi, its not Punjabi ethnocentrism at all, you painted a very week health facilities availablity in Pakistan or it was just for khi elite. If you havent heard about them then that doesnt mean they dont exist.
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
the health facilities are absolutely weak. most of those hospitals bill high. its not easy to be in the working class in that country and be able to pay those bills.
as a result, many die without treatment. and its too widespread to be ignored.
there is no malpractice insurance or malpractice lawsuits - people get away with things. the number of hospital beds is not enough to take care of big cities like karachi (I can't speak for lahore or Islamabad's facilities in terms of space).
Healthcare overall is a big mess. They have wacked up policies in Karachi. Edhi runs the ambulances in that city. Edhi's organization is a charity organization. Khi and the rest of the country, with its great healthcare as you say, can't come up with well-equipped ambulances...er that run on time?
Re: Pakistanis and Ghee: The Eternal Love Story
I dont know why the hell people start comparing a developing country with a developed one. Health services are bad agree, but the situation is not like Afirca or something. u should compare apples with apples, UK or US or similar. health service is free in UK and EU but i guess its all paid or insured.
Private Insurance companies do exist in Pakistan and they have list of hospitals where you can get treatment. most of the private companies provide this insurance to its employees.
in Punjab, a very effecient institute called Punjab Social Security, get tax funded by industries and in turn they provide health , education and social services to all the workers free of charge. they have their own hospitals and medical centres and have better standard of service compared with other state run hospitals.
i dont know much about why they have left all the job to do by Edhi - he is a great man to take all this.
last year Punjab launched a free embulance service in Lahore (rescue 1122) and after success now its extended to 6 more cities, its an indepandant funded by goverment and has good repute. I myself seen this difference during my last visit couple of moths back.

anyway I dont want to derail the topic. PCG always live in her own self created world and never accept anything that is not according to her.
I agree with topic, Paki women and men need to think and think again about figures, and stop getting fat … its something they consider good.
