Has our society accepted art as a respectable profession?
Reading an article written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz around 30-40 years ago, where he stated these two incidents:
(1) One of servant asked driver about the marriage of his daughter and asked ‘laRka kaisa hai’? He said that ‘baqi sab theek hai.. per laRka ser wer (shair o shayari) karta hai aur akhbaron main chapwata hai. Servant said to driver ’ iss main kiya bura hai? apne Faiz saheb bhi to likhte hain’. Driver said: ‘Faiz saheb to ameer aadmi hai’.
Meaning involvement of poor man was / is not acceptable in our society.. Ye bhi ammeron ke chonchle hain.
(2) Someone approached culture department for funding a program related to culture and the karta dharta there replied ’ hamare paas Agriculture ke liye paisa nahin, aur aap culture ke liye paise mangne aa gae.. pehle roti, kapRa, makaan se jaan chhote gi to culture ki bari aae gi’
Whats your views on this matter? Whether our society improved and accepted art and artists or not?
I dont think so, its still a taboo in middle class families. Maybe for ultra rich and burger families its not an issue, but most of the others consider people of loose character joining the industry.
We all have appreciation for some kind of art.....some like fine arts and some like performing arts....
but society have problem when we have to buy such pieces of arts..we are not ready to pay the price...
in our society every thing is directly proportional to money..same like west......
i have a japanese channel on my tv which i watch some times....i really saw japanese people appreciation their traditional art and culture....
there are lot of things which they still have at their homes which were used by japanese peoples for centuries...
like tatami mat...
people do buy books, paintings and cds.. people appreciate art but not personality of artists. As Ali said its still considered taboo in middle class families, although some field now pay handsome amounts to artists as compared to past, where no one could think of making art a full time profession

wesay in dono examples main problem arts ya iski acceptance nahi, pesa/ economics hay

agree, but from Faiz saheb's time to this period, there have been some positive changes as to economic sides of arts. Now artists specially related to performing arts earn more as compared to past, but the overall attitude of society towards artists is same ' 2 number log' as Ali pointed in his post. Our society respects corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, but doesn't seem to accommodate artists.
firstly, when you'll continue to have likes of vina malik and her supporters in the ranks of "artists" i will also call them 2 numbers
2ndly it depends on what you call arts. a writer for me is not be an artist, similarly a poet... they are thinkers of the society. over all, today most of our so called artists are from music, dance, film, drama side... and how if you know how these industries work i dont think when people call them 2 number they do anything wrong.
on the other hand, artists like khattat, kaashi kar etc are not really given any significance in todays "artist" lobbies, where "Dancing" and "singing" is a must have "talent" to be an artist.

But do our writers get same respect as writers in west?
There are good people in all fields and by referring to likes of Veena Malik, we can't generalise all people as '2 number'. I think society is becoming somewhat intolerant towards performing art. There is no harm in promoting performing arts, if they don't break generally accepted norms of society. A stage show full of vulgar mujra songs should be condemned, but a drama portraying some serious message should not be looked down upon.
I do agree that artists who are linked with cottage industry also don't get their due appreciation in society and are exploited by middle-manship.
^ my point is "majority" of these "music/dance/mujra/film/drama" artists are 2 number. the over all mood and atmosphere of an industry counts. there may be few good people, but a good soul keeps distance from filthy places... raja gidh being one of your favorite books, i'm sure you know enough about these "artists"... i'm not saying they do not exist or nobody accepts them, they were part of our society from centuries and they will be part for the centuries to come...
and you said there is no harm in promoting performing arts if they dont break generally accepted norms of society, again these norms are different for different classes of society... for some, dramas shown on TV today are acceptable, for others they are gross... just like for some men and women dancing together in marriages is acceptable, for others even thinking about mixed gathering is out of bounds...
its a topic with more grey areas than well defined standards and has very vague boundaries between whats accepted and whats not.
We have variety of fields. If we take example of music.. we have folk singers like Reshma, Ustad Juman, Abida Parveen, etc. Can we generalise them as 2 number. Most of us will not. But does our society accept such singers as integral part? may be not.

People gossip that some actresses have affair with directors of dramas and movies to get work, especially those who get a lot of work from certain directors. Like we have examples of neeli and Javaid sheikh, and recently syed Noor and Saima. The latter has disclosed a few months ago that they have married, these activities I'll class as 2 number.

Extramarital affairs are 2 number activities, but marrying a person from same is not. If we take example of Saima, she never came in scandalous news during her 20-25 years long career.
There are practices casting couch in Industry that make people to call all the industry as 2 number.

Even If saima or any other actress from showbiz/movies has a clear record, people from our culture will still touch ears when they hear their names.

That is generalisation. Even some decades ago, the society was very much intolerant towards working women in the fields like teaching, nursing, etc. Every working woman was considered as 'buri aurat'. Kishwar Naheed is poet not an actress. Her autobiography is titled ' Buri aurat ki katha'
