Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

For making fun and having fun you can say whatever you like. The truth is:
Every language has its own peculiar sounds attached to alphabets and words. It is hard to find an exact equivalent of that sound in your native language.
If you are not born and raised in a country , or you have not been taught the language by a native , or you were not young enough when you moved to a country it is hard for you to pickup the exact pronunciations of the words and letters of that country.
What about the differences in accents of a Brit , an Aussie and a Yankee.
Today is to-die in Australian , is it not ?
If an Arab learns English with the help of books taught by another Arab , he/she will not be able to pronounce the English letter P. For them Pepsi is Bibsee, Pakistan is Bakistan , Park is bark and Point is Bint.
Urdu and Hindi have same roots , but Zeera is Jeera in hindi, Zareena is Jareena and Zulm is Julm in Hindi. What can you do about it ?

Start a thread on GS, and laugh about it, may be?

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

My parents with their hardcore Punjabi accents:
measure - MEYER
pleasure - PLEYER
treasure - TREYER

Me and my sister joke around and ask my mom to say "I count my treasure to measure my pleasure".

"I count my treyer to meyer my pleyer"

hahahahhahah :D

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

You are so mean Phati...I do eggjactly the same with my punjabi speaking uncles!!!

And my punjabi speaking Math teacher used to say: what is the su-kayr root of 20? My dad on the other hand would say, what is the iss-square root of 20? Beta iss-skool kaisa hai...chal iss-smile karo camera kay liye...

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

^ HAHA. nah I’m not mean… cuz in the next few seconds, my mom will tell me to say “pakora” and I always have a tough time getting that “r” part right. :disgust: it’s hard.

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

The V and W mix up is there primarily because theres one letter in Urdu, "vow" I guess. It can cause some funny mixups.

welcome back Spocky :lifey:

As for V and W… A conversation with a linguist turned out that in pronouncing the word starting from W, you need to make your lips round like letter O and then pronounce.. it’s not Vaater it is … W(O)ater ..hmmm …

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

Hi AQ and thanks!

Another thing desis usually pronounce wrong, though not as bad and prominent is the 'th'. Again like AQ mentioned, it has to do with the way you position the tongue while saying it.

Goras on the other hand have just a 'd', so they would have problems pronouncing words like 'darwazah' (the alphabets daal and dddaal mixup), and then theres also alphabets ray and rrray.

** Try making them go 'kharak singh key kharakney sey kharakhti hain khirkiyaan, aur khirkiyoon ke kharakney sey kharkhta hai kharak singh"**

Re: Pakistani Pronunciations

i teach pronunciation....it takes some practice to master it..as a teacher i would say ...never ever belittle people..atleast they try. phonics would change for example when my father was a student of english the word often (he pronunced it off-tun) and master g punished him....now the gora says of-tun is perfectly all right.
