Pakistani ppl

okay, i know somebody at my summer work, who recently came back from Pakistan. He was there for about 2 months. He was talking to me, how felt that ppl down there blindly copy Americans to a point, where you get a feeling they have no pride in desi culture, lack of self esteem.

-prefer to eat at Mc.dicks compare to better meals at similar price (it’s western=cool),
-girls wearing jeans (in fact there was a post today where someone stated “only paindoos wear salwar kameez”)
-they TRY to speak English, when everybody around them can speak punjabi, urdu
-people look up to you, if you can speak English (Billions of ppl could, what’s so special)
-He gave somebody DOLCE & GABBANA shirt, person didn’t like it b/c it was made in Italy instead of USA (moron)
-Fair & Lovely is used in masses to get pale skin (that’s sad)

he gave me so many ex’s, these are just few top of my head. He was asking me, why desi copy Americans so much? i told him it was always like this. He disagreed with me and said it’s 10 times worse. Now, i havn’t been to Pakistan in few years.

I believe there are people on GS, who are either in Pakistan or visit Pakistan often and i would like to hear your point of view.

Re: Pakistani ppl

It's not just Pakistan but most countries in the subcontinent. Maybe they feel the need to become global, more accepted, blend better....dunno.

Re: Pakistani ppl

Er .. maybe because of Globalization ? Because cultures are fluid ? Maybe 50 yrs later everyone will be trying to speak Mandarin . Or even Hindi :p

Re: Pakistani ppl

Those are having Western influence on their brain till their soul.

I prefer to be as paindo as it feels normal.

Re: Pakistani ppl

'Girls wearing jeans' - what would be the problem with that seeing as tho the guys 'back home' have been doing it for years now??

Agree with Niksik and M0an, it's globalisation and imo ppl shouldn't be so sensitive to these petty little things as if they're trying to stay in their own little bubble.. esp the clothing issue.. it's common for young women in the Middle-East (inc in conservative Iran) and Oriental countries to wear western style clothes but their men don't accuse them of 'abandoning their culture.' Why do so many desi men feel the need to comment on what women are doing/wearing/saying.. esp when they're doing the same so-called 'bad' things themselves..

I know Lahori with most of the stuff u have mentioned here u haven't differentiated between the sexes but the 'girls wearing jeans' thing annoys me..

Using 'Fair and Lovely' is a bit sad but I don't think that's down to western culture, desi culture had a preference for pale skin since before it had access to western culture and media (pale=wealthy etc)..

Re: Pakistani ppl

:k:

Re: Pakistani ppl

by this logic, those who even migrated to 'amrika' have least pride in culture and lowest of self esteems that they didn't even want to live in Pakistan?

Re: Pakistani ppl

i thought women shouldn't dress like men (in islam) am i wrong??
and when you wear jeans and shirt, you showcase your assets (in most cases)
i often see desi girls wearing jean/shirt, it takes about 5 sec to noticed all their curves

Deeba, answer this..if a man does something, does that mean women should?
if i am working without a shirt under hot conditions, does that give my wife a free pass to go out topless?

as far as FAIR AND LOVELY goes, it's pretty sad regardless of the reason behind

Re: Pakistani ppl

i see more Punjabi (sikh) in Canada who have more pride in their culture than a lot ppl in Pakistan.

Re: Pakistani ppl

and since most Pakistanis are allegedly turks, persians, arabs and central asians, I guess they did not have pride in their roots to end up in the subcontinent and then staying.. :)

Re: Pakistani ppl

have u seen how women sew their shlawar kameez's in pak? .. do u think they r loose like a garbage bag? ..NO buddy they're not .. theyr r pretty FITTED! theyr curves r rvivslbe in it alos.. curves will show what u wear if u have them ..

everyone uses fair and lovely in paksitan ..even FAIR sKINneD females .. n they use it mostly to keep their skin fresh and glowing n to avoid a tan when theyv gotta go out in scortching heat ..not exactly to change their skin colour because they know it will not ..

n u have so much pride in everything paksitani .. thats y u hardl go n visit cause if u did u wouldnt be asking this stuff would u? ..

Re: Pakistani ppl

This is how it goes in every civilization, people want to 'imitate' the dominant nation, goto China/Japan you will find them doing the same.

20-30 years later if China becomes the 'super-power' slowly their culture will become cool (though their food is already popular) and it will be fashionable to wear what they wear, how they eat etc.

Re: Pakistani ppl

So, the logic of original question is wrong? :D

Re: Pakistani ppl

You give the impression like every Pakistani copies them! Your friend had an experience of a small segment of our society. Advise your friend that next time he visits, he should get his ass outside of his elite Lahore neighborhood to see the real Pakistan.

Re: Pakistani ppl

Why only bring up girls wearing jeans? What about guys wearing them? Oh yeah, that's OK, since the guy who was talking all that **** wears them himself. What exactly do you think have clothes to do with culture?

Aaho, since you claim to be a "paindu", do you wear shalwar kameez to work?

Since when is it cool to eat McDonald's food? I thought that kind of food was only for poor people who want to eat out.

Shalwar Kameez isn't even a Pakistani clothing, it's central Asian. So why don't you people just stick to your dhoti Kurta?

When you go to a "Pind" in Pakistan, people will offer you a "Botal" of Coca Cola, Pepsi, 7up etc., So even Paindus copy Americans, yeah? LOL

Re: Pakistani ppl

tight salwar kameez is still better than tight jeans and shirt..

as far as fair and lovely goes, you got it wrong.most use to get pale skin..regardless of how pale their skin is, they want one shade lighter.

I’m pretty sure their are better products in the market for your skin than FAIR N LOVELY. Again any girl who uses Fair N lovely is pretty sad.

i found some ads for ya.. i think these are indian ads, i have seen pakistani ads but i dont’ wanna spent time looking for those… these ads are lil extreme but you get the point behind FAIR N LOVELY (world`s no 1 fairness cream)

check them out

Re: Pakistani ppl

If you’re going down the ‘women shouldn’t dress like men’ argument can’t the same be said about shalwar khameez?? It’s basically the same thing but in different colours and cuts (which u could also do with jeans/trousers).

Everyone knows the real reason some Pak men don’t like their women wearing jeans (or generally western clothes) is cos they associate it with western traits such as independence and not caring for their culture.. which is ok when they themselves are doing it :smack:

You can get round the curves issue easily by wearing a longer shirt or jacket and/or looser fit jeans.. this is what a lot of Arab hijabi girls do as well as those in Iran and Turkey.. they aren’t as hung up on making girls dress the way their mothers and grandmothers did.. It’s perfectly possible to dress in western clothes and still look modest.

Re: Pakistani ppl

I actually want to say few of my words as I dont want to explain what I did to show off.

"YES" I wore Shalwar Qameez to my work, when it was a cultural gathering! I would love to wear it daily if they allow cultural dress code at work!
"YES" I wore Shalwar Qameez to University few times because I "like" to feel proud showing my culture.

Also Shalwar Qameez is not only cultural thing. I "prefer" speak Urdu than in English. for those who can understand Urdu.

I look for Desi food around the area, where I visit then stopping by a McDonalds.

PS: Dhoti Kurta is also NOT only Pakistani school but its also "sub-continent" clothing. People in Pind do mostly offer tea!! Some do offer Carbonated Cold Drinks but I ask them for some local (house/Pind) made thing than that cola.

Now you will think I am showing off and that was the reason I didn't explain it at first point.

Re: Pakistani ppl

Culture is fluid, it has internal and external influences. in that change there is good and there is bad.
expecting that the culture will be static is wrong. There are things we now take as part of the pak culture which our ancestors would be shocked at, but such is life. although I must add that in some cases there are also things that were parts of culture that have gone away with waves of puritanical approach over last few decades.

Re: Pakistani ppl

This inferiority complex is prevalent in the ex-colonised populations.....i guess it coerced the native populace to denigrate themselves....and emulate all that they thought was great.
