I need some suggestions of what CDs I should look out for in Karachi. Also, how much do music CDs sell for (both English and Urdu/Punjabi)? Are they usually originals, ‘good’ copies or really bad quality? If anybody could suggest any specific music places in Karachi that I should check out, that would greatly be appreciated.
Please do not recommend Junoon or Hadiqa cause I am not a fan of their music. Here is what my list is comprised of thus far. I do not know of album titles so I’m just listing artists.
Haroon
Strings
Abrar
Ali Sher
Faakhir
Shezad Roy (someone recommended his stuff to me although I have never heard it)
Huma Khawaja
My mother recently returned from Pakistan and a cousin of mine who is my age sent as a gift a bunch of Cd’s back with her for myself. The quality is quite good, or good enough. The only cd i got that was paki was Abrar ul Haq’s punjabi touch which is good, since I am not a fan of pukeistani music anyway :). I got mostly Bally Sagoo, UK Bhnagra, and a bunch of hindi movie DVD’s On the back of my A-U-H CD there is a palce called sadaf stereo in the Rainbow Centre, Saddar, in Karachi that sells CD’s, DVD’s..they have a website as well, check it out if you want.
If you like soft romantic stuff...go for abbas ali khan...new guy, and don't be fooled by the name. He is not some qawaali or ghazal guru, he is a new POPster...good quality music.
Location? do not go to rainbow centre...at least if you're a chic, or send out some guys in the family (believe me, my feminist self does not enjoy saying that) ...rainbow centre wholesalers will give you cd for 30 ruppees if you know someone there.
Otherwise, if you want to go yourself and pick out your own selection, shops in clifton are good, although you pay double the price. Do not ever buy cd's from upscale stores in upscale shopping areas like The Forum or The Point/Pak Towers...they jack up prices to pay the higher rent for the shop.

I really dont think you know much about whats going on in Pakistan. The only piracy is that which pertains to indian music. The legal distributing and recording companies in Pakistan have lowered the price of the albums to such an extent that people would rather buy the original CD than a non-existent pirated copy.
well i reccomend shehzad’s zindagi:k:
abrar of course is great in punjabi touch:dhimpak:
jawad is alrite, he has a good voice but his music can be a bit boring
faakhir’s aatish is rele good, i loved it
haroons lagan is decent, but dont get haroon ki awaz, it was crap

Prices are constantly coming down due to fierce competition. A CD will typically set you back by about Rs 20-50 (depending upon your negotiation skills and how many you are buying).
The quality is usually pretty good. You can test them out at home, and if not happy, you can always exchange them, so its a good idea to test them while you are in Pak.
You can also buy VCD's of Pak song videos (same price). Make sure you play them in Pak to find out the quality of the print. If not happy, exchange them.
