Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

Not sure if it is unique to Pakistan, but at the highest levels, people just don’t give up. Its like yo, you had a chance, you got it or you blew it, now go away do something else. Do these people ever retire?

Most, not all, people in US once they lose the race for the highest post, just walk away.

why do we have the people in Pakistan just hanging on, whether its party leadership or its vying for the highest post.

At lower levels things may be more comparable, because see in UK and US the MPs or congressmen/women hanging on term after term whether i majority or opposition.

are there any stats on avg turnover in houses of parliament or cabinets or party leadership.

are hangers on a more universal phenomenon than I think?

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

Great Observation

I take your point but there have been a few exceptions. People like Sherbaz Mazari & wali khan retired after losing elections. On the other extreme Maududi left the party Amir post and handed over to Mian Tufail.

I don't think this is unique to
Pakistan , much the same has happened in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and SrinLanka. Generally speaking politicians and sports people struggle with knowing when to call it quits. The same applies to military, businessmen and celebrities but we judge them for some reason by diff yardsticks.

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

In US they know the masses are not fool and cannot be fooled while in Pakistan our masses can be fooled again and again and forever. That is how I feel.

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

true but a buddha balding muhamad ali with a pot belly running into his house and yelling to a lady (who looks young enough to be his daughter not his mother) "maaa main pass ho gaya hoon" does not do a number on anything except people's aesthetic sense and entertainment value. Same with businessmen. Military has a path in general, people go to a level and retire.

Politicians are a different breed.

the company you mention pakistan in, sorry to say is not really great company, I was thinking that if we set aside the anglo angle and looked at perhaps korea, japan, denmark, even greece and spain etc and see how different we really are.

the parliament level people aside, i don't know if ppl who were president or PM stay on to vie for the top post year after year, decade after decade. i may be wrong, i don't know

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

The political climate in Pakistan and America are way different . In Pakistan people use staying in power as a commodity that directly equates to their own personal security and monitory gains . Now this is not the case over here in America . The good old formula ''Survival of the fittest'' is literally practiced in Pakistan till death .

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

it highlights the lack of maturity, Vision in the long run and charachter in the soceity that brings up such individuals ..... as Mirch put it we do it again and again :(

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

Because in Pakistan leaders are stronger than parties (most of the parties are single-person-parties) as oppose to US where parties are stronger than personalities.

Can you imagine PML(N) or PPP holding 'primaries' to select their candidate for PM?

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

I would say that there is some truth in D6C's stance that in Pakistan leaders are stronger than the parties themselves.

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

Its the character of South Asian politics......... Worshipping the personalities......

and as for rest of the disciplines......... plain simple greedyness and idea that a 'senior'/'older' person is more able/wise/capable to handle stuff compared to a 'bacha' so to say..

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

A good observation. But comparing Pakistani politicians with politicians of America and West is just like comparing apples with oranges. The good comparison is with India as India and Pakistan shares many things common, as once Pakistan was part of India. Indian politicians are also corrupt and almost behaved the same way as Pakistani politicians. The only difference is accountability. In India judiciary is very strong, independent and almost neutral. The supremacy of parliament over military and powerful judiciary made India the biggest democracy in the world. Coming back to Pakistani politicians, very rarely a corrupt politician is held accountable and those who made accountable were mostly by dictatorship opposing the generals in power. Mostly the corrupt politicians, who were in the government before dictatorship, continued their perks and corruption by supporting dictatorship and who so ever dictator in power is happy to get them in the government to prolong their illegal rule. Same is true for corrupt judiciary of Pakistan; they immediately change their loyalties by taking pco nonsense and continue their corrupt decisions against the interest of country.

Keeping in view the above paradigm, Pakistani bagharat politicians continue their corruption and rule without considering the interest of people and country. Even in biggest disasters they do not resign as their conscious are dead. There are some exceptions but very few.

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

Power is concentrated in a few hands. There is probably less social progression in Pakistan over all. One reason we have the same old faces is that Pakistanis believe in family lines - ie the Bhuttos, Sharifs, Wali Khans and so many more.

There is an element in Pakistani culture to cling onto power as long as possible. In politics this can be seen by looking at BB, ZAB, NS, Mushy. Mushy thought he was God's Gift to Pakistan as did BB. They both believed that they were making Pakistan better ad it could not do without them. They did not realise they had ruined the country and made things worse.

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

I think media should play a role and force people to resign once they loose the race or have been at the top job for few times and make them realise its perfectly normal. Ideally it should happen from within a democratic party but there is none in Pakistan. Parties can only be more powerfull if they are raised as institution not just revolving around one person. Even some add their names to the parties PML-Nawaz, PML-Zia etc, They never make parties stronger but themselves as superme being until they die! normal or accidental death!

Re: Pakistani Politicians and fading away/stepping away gracefully

The problem is that the media makes angels out of such people just as it did when BB returned and just as it did when NS was protesting Zardari in 2009. The media has given these figures a new lease of life.
