Since this news spread around, many on social media in particular are objecting that only in west can a “muslim” mayor be elected while in a muslim country, a christian or any other minority cannot. But somebody explained this rather corrected so we should be aware of the facts:

“A CHRISTIAN COULD NEVER BE ELECTED MAYOR IN A MUSLIM CITY!”
Since Sadiq Khan’s election as Mayor of London, many people seem to be suggesting that no Muslim city would ever be open-minded enough to elect a Christian as mayor.
So, in the interests of accuracy, and because FACTS ARE OUR FRIENDS, I present a list of some of the many Christians who have done just what Mr Khan has done - been elected to high office in Muslim countries where they are a religious minority:

• In 2005 Alees Salman became the first Christian and first woman to chair Bahrain’s upper house of Parliament. Bahrain is 70% Muslim.

• Pakistan currently has a Christian minister of ports and shipping, Kamran Michael. Pakistan is 96.4% Muslim.

• The Turkish city of Mardin recently elected its first female Christian mayor, Februniye Akyol. Turkey is 96.5% Muslim.

• Boutros Boutros Ghali, a coptic Christian and former head of the UN, was Egypt’s Foreign Minister for 14 years. Egypt is 90% Muslim.

• The capital of the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia, has a Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaya Purnama. Indonesia is 87.2% Muslim.

• Senegal had a Catholic president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, for 20 years. Senegal is 92% Muslim.

• Lebanon had a Christian president, Michel Suleiman, from 2008-2014. Lebanon is 54% Muslim.

• The mayor of Ramallah, the capital of Palestine, is Janet Mikhail, a Roman Catholic (thanks to Jason Faulkner for that one!).

It is fantastic that London has resisted the tide of Islamophobia sweeping our culture to elect a mayor based on his policies and personal qualities, but let’s not pretend that ‘western’ countries are the only places where religious minorities can be elected to office.
On the other hand, it would be irresponsible to suggest that no countries have restrictions on the religion of those who attain public office. Some countries have laws explicitly stating that the Head of State must belong to one particular religion, a form of religious bigotry that is unacceptable in the 21st century.
One such country is Britain, where the law states that the monarch must be a Christian Protestant.

People in Pakistan got involved after Imran Khan openly started promoting and advocating Zac Goldsmith. Even asked his supporters in London to go vote for Zac. I read many tweets on Twitter about people so drowned in blind love for the great leader, that they actually voted for Goldsmith even though they were Labour supporters. IK unfairly shifted the dynamics of an election not even in his own country. That's wrong. After PTI supporters treaded a hash tag regarding Goldsmith on Twitter, PMLN obviously tweeted against them and IK. Then got fully involved in the whole matter. Before IK's endorsement of Goldsmith, many didn't even know of the Mayoral election let alone who Sadiq Khan is. It's good if he works on his policies onlyonly, that's why British public have voted him in.

He is representing all the communities in London not just muslims. That is why he is called mayor of London. London has Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Jews, atheists etc. It is better to build bridges with all these communities and he is a far far better guy than those so called Muslims who kill and maim and blow up their coreligionists everyday all over the world. I would rather support him than those animals.

There is a huge difference between being tolerant of others homosexuality and running active campaign in favor homosexuality. If a shah se zyada shah ka wafadar Muslim get such position then I dont think its a big deal because they have long history of awarding people like salman rushdie, sharmeen obaid (writer/producer of Pakistan's Double Game)

He voted in favor of Gay marriage in 2013. He is already in accordance with ultra liberalism. Seems he has nothing to do with muslims.

Why is there even a question whether it's all Islamic? The guy never claimed to be a Islamic leader. He is a people's representative in a republic country. He is obligated to lead his constituency/city within the constraints of constitution and laws. He cannot start his own shariah laws.
It's amazing that westerners are seeing him as a positive ambassador of Muslim and Pakistani community, while you are seeing him as shame to Muslim and Pakistani community. That just shows that how twisted your thought process is.
