PAT leader warns to bomb UK embassy

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader on Friday threatened the British High Commission in Islamabad with a suicide attack if the British government did not withdraw the knighthood title awarded to Salman Rushdie.

“Like other Muslims, I am a true lover of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). I warn the British government that if it does not withdraw its decision to award the knighthood to the blasphemer, I will carry out a suicide attack on the British High Commission in Islamabad,” said local PAT leader Umer Riaz Abbasi on Friday at a rally in G-9 Markaz.

Amid loud sloganeering against the British government and Rushdie at the rally, **PAT Islamabad president Syed Sadaqat Banori supported suicide attacks on Rushdie and those who support him. **“We cannot allow anyone to blaspheme against our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). For His honour, we can sacrifice our lives,” he said. The rally resounded with loud ‘ayes’ and participants raised their hands when Banori asked them if they were ready to lay down their lives for the honour of the Prophet.

The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) also protested the knighthood to Rushdie in a demonstration in G-9. National Assembly opposition leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman told protestors that by knighting a blasphemer the British government had hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims throughout the world. Rehman also slammed Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairwoman Benazir Bhutto for opposing suicide attacks on blasphemers. He said Benazir had sided with ‘Rushdie supporters’. MMA national assembly minister from Islamabad Mian Muhammad Aslam and local leader Maulana Nazir Farooqi slammed the west, especially Britain, for encouraging and honouring** “enemies of Islam”.**

Little do they know that they are the biggest enemies of Islam.

Rumpus in assembly over Benazir’s demand to sack Ejaz

LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Afzal Sahi has said that he will kill controversial writer Salman Rushdie if he comes across him.
**
“Death is the only punishment for a blasphemer,”** said the speaker when Rana Sanaullah of the PML-N, on a point of order, asked the chair to clarify the government’s position on the federal religious affairs minister’s statement about the award of knighthood to Rushdie.

“You are the speaker of the assembly and you should mark your words carefully,” Sanaullah said and asked the speaker to refrain from issuing ambiguous statements. “I am a Muslim first and a speaker later,” said Sahi. “If you consider death as the only punishment for a blasphemer, then you should resign and commit yourself fully to the fulfillment of your duty as a Muslim,” Sanaullah said.

Sanaullah’s constant nagging forced the speaker to say that he will kill the controversial writer if he ever runs into him.

Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was also present at the session.

The government benches as well as the MMA and PML-N members hailed the statement of the speaker and the floor of the House echoed with slogans in support of the speaker and against the PPP chairperson. The few PPP members present during the session were weighed down by the treasury members.

The ruling party MPAs chanted slogans and did not allow the PPP members to clarify their position as the chief minister sat calmly. The House echoed with slogans of “Benazir Murdabad”, “Ghaddar Hai Ghaddar Hai, Rushdie Ka Jo Yar Hai”. The treasury members also held placards to protest against the PPP chairperson.

The incident occurred when the speaker was trying to pacify treasury and opposition members, who were hurling abuses at each other. The members became charged when Saba Sadiq of the PML quoted Benazir Bhutto as saying that Federal Religious Affairs Minister Ejazul Haq should be dismissed for supporting terrorist attacks on controversial author Salman Rushdie.

The lady MPA condemned the PPP chairperson’s statement, saying she (Benazir) had supported a blasphemer by issuing such a statement. She said the statement was an attempt to gain popularity in the western media. “She (the PPP chairperson) should be given the membership of the House of Lords to satisfy her lust for power,” she said. An excited treasury member said the Punjab government should allocate a special fund as bounty on Rushdie’s head.

Punjab Law Minster Raja Basharat accused the PPP of having double standards on the issue. He said the PPP joined hands with the treasury to protest against Rushdie’s knighthood. He said the PPP leadership’s statements over the knighthood issue proved that it attached no importance to the sentiments of the people of Pakistan.

He said that Ejazul Haq was a representative of the government and the people and any stance against him was a stance against the popular will of the people of the country. He condemned the PPP chairperson’s “advocacy” of Rushdie and announced a token walkout.

The MMA, however, staged a separate walkout after the treasury members returned to the House. Muhammad Waqas of the MMA said there will be no compromise on the issue of the Prophet (PBUH). Ijaz Summa of the PPP said religion was a personal matter.

Makhdoom Ashfaq of the PML said such statement was made to give an impression that only Benazir could tackle the terrorism issue. The clamour subsided when the session was adjourned for the afternoon prayers.

Earlier, Opposition Leader Qasim Zia said Islam was a religion of peace and tolerance. He said the religion did not permit hatred and murder of one’s enemy. The enraged PPP leader stated that he was ready to lay down his life for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The stance taken by the government benches was irresponsible and talk of a suicide attack was against the ethics of Islamic teachings, he said. He asked the government benches to clarify their stance on suicide attacks.

Re: Pakistani mullahs and their disciples going crazy!

What a bunch of morons. Trying to get a political mileage out of the scene.

Re: Pakistani mullahs and their disciples going crazy!

Hope they do commit suicide... Good riddins to bad rubish!

Re: Pakistani mullahs and their disciples going crazy!

to mess with britain will be the biggest mistake these guys in the first story will ever make. to even threaten britain like that they already have a gun pointed at them.

theres an area of sensetivity that britain has somewhat ignored but its a challenge for muslim countries to look to learn and direct a more two-way relationship. the opportunity is there

theres another area of sensetivity, that is where threats of suicide bombings and killings will not be taken lightly. britain can handle protests, marches and complaints but greatly values the life of its citizens. this is a cultural difference. pakistan, pakistanis tend not to get too alrmed at these threats, as evidenced by history and today the price of life in britain is dearer.

marches, protests are a cultural reality so is the rightful dismay at the decision to grant the hater of islam such a prestigious honour. if you complain about these then you are not intune with south asian culture.

Re: Pakistani mullahs and their disciples going crazy!

Why pakistanis have problem with these things? why other muslims do not speak out against these things?
