Pakistani Movies

I read an earlier post regarding the release of the movie Jinnah. It was shown in October of 1998 at the Montreal International Film Festival. Does anyone know about any plans to release the film to a broader audience in theatres? It seems almost as though the film isn’t getting the marketing it deserves.

Also I was curious if anyone seen the film Zar Ghul. It is a Pakistani movie which was released in a few Film Festivals and even got on the cover of the British magazine “Sight and Sound”. The movie is a politico-social commentary on the feudal system in Pakistan.

good point. I have missed all the limited showings of these films and wouldn't mind buying them on DVD. Does anybody know if they are available and where, plus other movies such as blood of hussain etc...

If not why not? Does somebody have any contact with the directors/producers of these films and ask 'em why these films have not been released to the general public.

Zar Gul was shown at a small film festival in Toronto. I went to see it with a few friends. It was dissapointing. A laughable film.

I don't know whats wrong with the producer/distributor of Jinnah, it could have a wider release, not sure what happened. You can get a copy at your local Indian/Pakistani video store.

Achtung

I thought the film Jinnah was a waste of celluliod, boy whata story and whata pigs ear made of it.

Zar Gul

Salmaan Peerzada
Pakistan, United Kingdom, 1997, 187 minutes, COLOR

Appearing In-Person: Actor Imraan Peerzada

Think of a cross between Lawrence of Arabia and All the President’s Men with a little Sam Peckinpah thrown into the mix and that begins to approximate the sprawling Pakistani revenge action epic Zar Gul. After witnessing the death of his father, the young Pathan tribesman of the title (played by writer-director Salmaan Peerzada’s son, Babar) is kidnapped by a bandit. Zar Gul escapes and makes it his life’s mission to uphold the ideals of love and honor his elders taught him. Using his power base as a successful businessman, he morphs into a legendary and almost mythic outlaw figure. He battles a corrupt would-be politician (Jamil Malik) and finds love with idealistic schoolteacher Yasmin (Faryal Gohar). Filmed on dozens of diverse locations in Pakistan, the country’s first international feature in 15 years is a rousing, thoughtful, absorbing adventure.-Eddie Cockrell
