Satinder Bindra: Pakistan tests raise concerns.

NEW DELHI, INDIA (CNN) – Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated further Sunday after Pakistan conducted its second short-range missile test in two days.

The neighboring countries’ conflict over the disputed territory of Kashmir has stirred concern in the Western world because both India and Pakistan possess nuclear capabilities.

CNN Correspondent Satinder Bindra gauged India’s reaction Sunday from New Delhi.

BINDRA: **Publicly, at least, India [is] calling these tests “antics” and the response of what India says is a “nervous state.” But privately, the Indians are very concerned. They view these tests as “provocative.” **

The Indians also say they are upset that the response from the Western world has been so lukewarm. President Bush called these tests disappointing. India perhaps [was] expecting some harsher language.

India’s prime minister [Atal Bihari Vajpayee] addressed a public rally here [Sunday]. And he’s appealing to international diplomats to do more to help India in its fight against terrorism.

International diplomacy, of course, is very active. Several diplomats from across the Western world [are] calling upon [Pakistani President] Gen. Pervez Musharraf to stop infiltration of guerrillas and militants into the Indian side of Kashmir. Also, there is a lot of pressure on India to exercise restraint.

Diplomatic sources here in New Delhi are telling CNN that Musharraf is perhaps asking for concessions. He wants India to pull back its forces from the border with Pakistan. He wants Indian forces to be pulled back from Kashmir before he is willing to offer any concessions.

In the next few days, diplomacy will be stepped up even further when the Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and the British Foreign Secretary [Jack Straw] will arrive in the region.

So they expect Pakistan to roll over and play dead in response to india's threats of attack?

Vajpayee is following the Ariel Sharon script to the core. They even look alike.
Now he says he wishes he regrets not attacking Paksitan immediately after dec 13. There is nothing original about this man at all.

Vaju has many faces to show to world.But unfortunately Pakistan knows all of his tricks and moves.
India hasn't seen anything yet from Pakistan.
Pakistan shows its cards when its needed to show.Long Live Pakistan.

The message from the Pakistani side to the whole world is clear," We are ready for war, if that's what it takes to defend every single inch of Pakistan". It's great that the whole worlds look at these tests as provocation. It further proves that never underestimate the resolve and determination of Pakistani people when it comes to defending our sovereignty.

this is sheer empty bravado NOT bravery. A true brave warrior does not seek war - he tries his darndest to prevent war. The peace in India and Pakistan would have been achieved a long time ago were it not for the fundamentalists. Decades of mullahs in Pakistan Pakistan have forced a band of extremist Hindu fanatics. That's made the job of even rational Pakistanis tough and similarly in India.

All that doesn't matter right now. Let's hope on both sides that some wisdom and sanity prevails.

Sanity must prevail, but if it doesn't, and even if Pakistan is or isn't guilty of something, we will still have to defend ouselves.

So Tariq-something where in the article does it say that Indians are nervous at the Paki missile tests. Go, do a course in English if you do not know that difference between "viewing it as provocative" and feeling nervous. If India wants, it can carry out a missile test of its own every single day for the next one year for all it matters. Maybe India does not want to see Mushy pissing in his pants....

I don't think its my English which is confusing you.Everyone except you knows and understand what I meant and wrote.BTW,goto Vajpayee and ask him why his DHOTI is breathing like crazy now.The whole world got the message except Vaju. But very soon he'll know when reality will kick in.Time is coming for that.
