ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP)— Six conservative Islamic groups that did surprisingly well in Pakistan’s parliamentary elections offered to support the U.S. war on terror as long as it isn’t against Islam.
America should not worry about our success,'' said Ameer ul-Azeem, spokesman for United Action Forum, a coalition of the parties. We would like to have better ties with them.‘’
Azeem told The Associated Press that the alliance is ready for talks with U.S. officials ``to work out what they expect from us and what we want them to do in the future for having better friendly relations.‘’
``We are ready to cooperate with the U.S. in the war against terrorism, but they should not expect support from us in a war against Islam or Muslims,‘’ Azeem said.
We will be flexible in the future,'' Ahmad said. We would like to cooperate with the world community in the war against terrorism, but this will be done by our own forces,‘’ Ahmad said.
According to the latest results of the Thursday vote, the six-party alliance secured 45 of 272 seats the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, which gives significant leverage in bargaining to form a new coalition. No party was close to winning a majority.
The alliance also won a controlling majority in the provincial legislature in northwestern Pakistan, the area bordering Afghanistan where it campaigned against the presence of U.S. forces in Pakistan trying to root out Taliban and al-Qaida members.
With returns still coming in, the alliance also is leading with 13 of 65 seats in southwestern Pakistan, ahead of the 10 won by their nearest rivals, the Pakistan Muslim League, which supports Musharraf.
