Pakistani government and Syria

So what’s Pakistani government’s take on Syria conflict?

Whose side are they on?

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

The side that's giving Zardari 10%?

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

Nobodies. I think they issued a statement saying that both sides should sit down and makes decisions based on dialogue not through violence.

There is not a lot Pakistan can do. We dont even trade with Syria much there isn’t much connection. Although the article below says Pakistan is supporting the Syrian Government. To be fair Pakistan relationship with Syria is basic. We hardly trade with them. :-\

**Here is the Foreign Office Formula:
**In any international issue wherein America and Saudia Arabia are involved, just follow 'em.

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

Well not in this case. Isn't it true that Pakistan is supporting Syrian government and is against foreign intervention?

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

^ You are talking about stand of China and Russia.

Secondly, Pakistan will not openly come out in favour of military intervention until a decision/stand is taken by KSA and America.

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

Pakistan is staying relatively neutral, due to the sectarian nature of the Syrian war. It's not taking any positions that will offend either Iran (Syria's biggest backer, which is Shia), or Saudi/Turkey (Syrian government's main enemies, who are Sunni).

The reality of the Syrian situation is that it is a proxy sectarian conflict between Shia Iran and Sunni Saudi/Turkey . Iran is trying to keep its allies in power (clerics linked to Iran's governments have issues fatwas stating that Alawis are Shia Muslims). Saudis are trying to dislodge what they see as an anti-Sunni , non-Muslim government to install a friendly, Sunni government instead.

With Pakistan having a very sizeable Shia population, it is advisable for Pakistan not to side with the Sunni world in such a sectarian conflict, to preserve social harmony. Lebanon is a lesson in what will happen if these flames ever get fanned too far.

When there is civil war in Muslim lands between Sunnis and Shias.... Pakistan's place is to back neither side.

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

would it be insensitive for me to remind the readers of 'syria ka badsaah mar gaya' wala joke?

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

What was the joke?

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

Sorry but Pakistan's foreign policy reminds me of this phrase, *"saaf chuptay bhi nahi saamnay aatay bhi nahi". *They adopted the same double standard policy towards US and Taliban and look what a big mess it created!

Re: Pakistani government and Syria

Washington is working out a situation which will necessitate foreign military intervention. GCC is always willing to sponsor conflicts conceived, produced and directed by the US. So what we have at hand right now is a transitional period which will eventually lead to a full-scale military conflict.

And while the theater of conflict is being readied, Pakistan is already seated and awaiting to clap at the first instance.
