Pakistani Films

Sheraz, for the last friggin’ time, take ONE stand and stick with it, dude!

Regarding the topic at hand, Pakistani film actresses are quite limited in the scope and depth of roles that are offered to them. Moreover, unfortunately, they are abused and even sexually harassed on the sets by directors, producers, and actors alike, as I read in one issue of Women’s Own magazine quite recently. I have no doubt that the actresses are objectionable to this kind of treatment but what can they do??? Their hands are tied in a country and society that is predominantly male-dominated and finds no harm in treating women as obejects that exist solely for male viewing and sexual pleasures. Did you ever see the vulgar dances in some of these movies? It’s so distateful but what can they do? In a line of work that is male-dominated like most professions are, especially in Pakistan and in other similar cultures, women are given very limited scope, and tend to be quite powerless.

On a lighter note, women definitely do seem to be making progress in the film industry with brilliant directors such as Sameena Peerzada and the like entering the scene. More power to them! :sunny:

moona i did take one stand and i am sticking with it...i dont know why its so hard for u get it

and also one more thing..u kept on saying what can they do what can they do..oh i have a solution for them..just stop acting in pakistani movies..no one puts a gun to their head to work in such movies..now was it that hard?

Sheraz, now how realistic is that? If these ladies stop acting, there will be a long line of more ladies waiting to get in. you may ask why do they stoop so low? Many reasons...its hard for a low-class girl from Nathia Gali or Heera Mandi to land a job at PTV. The money is attractive. Lack of opportunities to do anything else.

Look, things are changing sheraz. Sameena Peerzada, Javed Sheikh, Rukhsana Noor (Syed noor is good for nothing w/o her) are a few...and now there is a new line of tv wallahs interested in making films.

rauf khalid (Laaj - upcoming)
fahim burney (upcoming Pyar Hi Pyar Mein)
usman peerzada (launching new project: Achanak)
Asif Ali Pota : (Fire - upcoming)
Sameena Peerzada : (Sharaarat - i'm hearing mixed reports on her next film ...)
Shaan (I'm hearing mixed reports on his next project too...)

GRANTED, initially there will be a lot of new pple coming into the industry and there will be a lot of crashing and burning. Obviously this will happen for a while, since there is no film school in Pakistan. But after a few years, things will start clicking. Natural selection will have done some work. And you'll have a viable film industry.

It takes time though. And it takes effort. And it takes teamwork. Personally, I think film makers need to explore opening up production companies outside of Lahore, for a change in environment. Karachi, and Islamabad seem like fresh environments for film making. New people will come into the mix, and there will be more competition, and hence more experimentation and new ideas.

Keep up the faith. They're trying to bring back ur Nadeems and Shabnams.

wow i am impressed pcg..u have alot of knowledge of the pakistani film industry...well i do hope we can change things around...i wouldnt watch indian movies at all ..btw why dont we have pakistani movies in stores? i cant find it anywhere...i wanna watch that movie by javed sheikh but i dont know where to find it...i did find a vcd of 'tere pyar main' in pakistan but when i brought it here and started to watch, one of the cd didnt work :(

Ok Sheraz, be a good little boy now and listen up good and hard!

Pakistani women can do a whole lot, possibly more than men even, but they lack opportunities. True that no one is putting a gun to their heads to do this line of work but you know what??? They WANT to act, damn it!!!..and I hope they make quick progress, at minimum for the sake of females down the line who might be interested in getting into the field without feeling threatened of abuse and coersion. :o

moona dont make it women vs men issue....i just dont like to see muslim pakistani women dancing half naked...u might not have a problem with that but i do...just that simple ok..ya dig?

maybe I'm opening a new can of worms altogether but who is to say whose considered "decent public"... very judgemental and hypocritical..
sad actually...

i guess i really offended some people..ouch

Lets see, u were being anti-Pathan, and totally ignorant and inconsiderate of the plight of working women in Pakistan.

Hmm...yeah, you probably did offend someone down the line.

i wasnt talking about u..and i think i made it clear that i have nothing against working women as long as they are not half naked

I don't think we can say that Pakistanis make low standard movies because our male population like them so much - although there's obviously a fan base somewhere there.

Fact is most Pakistanis still much prefer Indian movies so make better standard films and people will watch them.

Exactly!!

now mr extreme would u be kind enough to inform us what the audience is for our pakistani films at the moment :)

Couldn't tell you Sheraz, I don't watch them myself because they are rubbish. I saw a new big budget film being advertised on ARY and that was supposed to have went down well from the audience reaction in interviews afterwards.

Doesn't matter where a film is made, if it's a good standard people will watch it.

I rest my case :smash:

I totally hear you. However, if you keep up with the happenings in the film industry, you'll find that for the past ~10 years, there has been a slow anti-kharaab Paki movie movement taking form. There are a LOT of people interested in making a movie, and there are a LOT of financers interested in putting their money forth. But the problem for a while has been to get the ball rolling.

I think YDAKH, even though it might not be oscar-worthy, is going to get that ball rolling. Javed Sheikh made like 5 crore in the first month alone, if I remember my numbers right. This has gotten people's mouths hanging open, and now a lot of people are gathering the guts to come forth and make a movie.

There is a growing interest to begin an industry in Karachi...Samina Peerzada's next film, reportedly, will be oriented in Karachi, so maybe the change of environment may have some positive effects.

Give the industry about 10 years. The tide is turning.

I certainly hope your right, I can totally see Karachi as the film capital of Pakistan.
I heard some rumor that a Pakistani movie made it to the Oscars? Know anything about that?

Good point:k:

The Pakistani film industry has ways to go before it can be declared as an admirable medium of entertainment. It requires $$$ to ensure that the smooth upgrade and revamping of the industry can take place. On a positive note, it seems that Pakistan is definitely making an effort in that direction. Let’s hope this keeps up! :jhanda:

:-o

Adnan Ahmed, have you been spying in my dreams??

Yes, you heard correct. To my knowledge a Pak movie made it to the Oscars...it was the masterpiece I made in my mind!

:) Honesty, I haven't heard of a paki movie to make it to the Oscars. However, many of our independent film maker have won international film awards for non-mainstream lollywood films.
