Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

I just found this online.. People have been saying good things about the movie.
The songs are very good, based on Bullah Shas work. Suddenly there is good stuff coming out of Pakistans film industry!
I think this came out last year, but I just heard the songs…
Has anyone seen this movie? It hasnt come out on DVD as Syed Noor apparently wants it to be released through a reputable international distributor.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan… Looks and sounds impressive.

Another song I liked… Play back singer by the way is Azra Jehan, cousin of Noor Jehan.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Okay, are you serious?

I am sorry. I cannot relate to some unrealistic village damsel with the meloncholy look and the overly colorful clothes. If a woman dressed like that in any Pakistani village, she'd be harassed and accused of God knows how many "sins". I don't live in a village. I don't walk by cows every day. This is the same trash that Syed Noor comes up with, and its about time "Lollywood" starts telling stories thru its films that are real and that people can relate to.

And its the same Saima. Aur koi film actress is stupid adulterous Syed Noor ko miltay nai?

Every film, he brings in this khambakhat heroine that no one else seems to want to hire, and I'm so sick of seeing her face in every film promo that comes out.

Idiots. Duniya kahan nikalgaye hai, and these people are still stuck making films featuring the cheapest girls in the country in the same "La-la-la, I'm walking by my village cows singing a song that sounds like its been sung by a frog".

^
:)
Still, people are saying they like this movie...
And songs are pretty good.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Baji, please chill out. No one gets harassed in the villages for just dressing colorfully -- as you yourself say that you don't livein a village, I really doubt you have a vague clue as to what its about. Your opinions are just based on the 2 paragraph blurbs you get to read about some atrocity in Dawn.

I don't have a problem with such films, except that they should be treated as regional films. Syed Noor has every right to make any films he wants with any actress of his liking. If you want him to take a different heroine, arrange some money and finance his future films and find some "new talent" too. I don't have any issues with Saima provided she plays characters her age either. She doesnt look old at all with Shaan. Coming back to what I was saying, I would definitely say that people like Saqib Malik and Shoaib Mansoor need to reimagine and redevelop Urdu cinema from scratch -- it should have the sophistication and depth which was evident in our plays during the 80s. Its THAT cinema which will take Pak forward and project a progressive image to the rest of the world.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

^This movie seems a bit more high brow then the typical jatt type films that come out of lollywood... The subject matter seems a little more sophisticated. I mean anything with Bullah Shah has to have some degree of sophostication no?

The sad thing is, that Punjabi language has come to be associated with being paindoo and uncultured.. So people jump to the conclusion that a punjabi film is automatically going to be bad.

Lollywood is genuinly crap, but this movie seems to be getting some appreciation from people. The song numbers are well done aswell...

The movie seems to focus on our cultural heritage, that of the great Bullah Shah...
Thats one of the main complaints, that the industry doesnt reflect the culture. But this film seems to atleast make the attempt, and from what I hear, its done a good job.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

The story behind the poem "thera Ishq NACHAYA," as far as I know relates to Bullah shah actually spending time in a brothel to prove his love for god even in midst of such debauchery... Thus he relates his passion for god thru his experience in the brothel...
So if this does take place in a brothel and the woman is a prostitute, then wouldnt that justify her wearing colorful clothes?

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Saima plays a role of a singer, who sings at wedding and stuff and she comes to shaons village to perform and he see her there.

This film has been running in a cinema since over 1 year and is doing very well.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Have you seen the film? How is it?

Re: Pakistani film Majajan… Looks and sounds impressive.

i didnt like the music composition…bullay shah poetry is mystifying…it shouldnt b ruined like dat…junoon did a better job…whereas the way main protagonist (singer) is posturing, instead of blending into the scene she ruined the whole melodious session. moreover, her dark color colothes is awfully yikez dat diturbs viewers eyes.

can nyone of u direct me how many movies made on this same genre (dako n prostitute) in the last decade?

showing bad stuff wont gonna change…to revolutionize, feed healthy n good stuff to mindz
(even if i pass the music…setting is not showing directors any cogitative approach.)

well right now ppl njoy abida parveen in Sufiana kalam of Hazrat Shah Hussain. (that may make a difference)

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Bulleh Shah has been celebrated in a MUCH MORE sophisticated manner than this. I don't think this movie and its trashiness does anything to match Bulleh Shah's quality of poetry.

The stuff Junoon did honors the poetry. This just brings it down.

Of course, yes, compared to other movies, this movie probably is a bit better. But how long are we going to settle for these sorts of movies as an audience? I have been following the movie industry now for over 10 years, and I've tried to put my hope in every movie that seemed reasonably better than status quo, even though if the film stood on its own, it would crash and burn next to the cheapest Indian movie. But I'm sick of it. This movie shows that a brilliant director like Syed Noor has not been able to move past his movies like Choorian and Mehndi Walay Haath. Those movies were released some time ago. Its the same technology. The same heroine. The same dressing style. Seems like the same darn village/set. The same hero.

I mean, any reasonable person knows that staying stuck to this village bell Saima-Shaan wohi ghisi-phiti hui themes will NOT help Pakistan's movie scene progress. I don't care if its Punjabi. Punjabi culture is so much more rich than this. Punjabi movies, IF DONE RIGHT, could be the edge Pakistan has over cinema in the region. But they're not going to accomplish that by rehashing movies like Choorian over and over again, unwilling to explore the world Punjabis have created beyond the pind scene.

I agree that we need brilliant gurus to create the Urdu scene out of scratch. But its going to be most likely done thru underground ventures. Just like the music scene has blossomed now after the underground groups started being given a chance.

You're already seeing in the form of telefilms. If a person wants to make a movie, they're really resorting to telefilms to do the job at the moment. Its safer, and gives better return on the money than a full screen movie. Until they decide to develop that further, there will be no more Urdu movie industry. Its dead at the moment.

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

How does this bring Bullah Shah down? Its sung the way it should be...
While I like Junoon, many people also accuses them of bringing down Bullah Shah and others from What I hear.

And I dont understand how we can take the movies out of the gaon... If anything, we need to bring the movies back into the gaon..
Majority of the population lives in villages, wouldnt a movie that reflects their daily lives be more relevant?

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

Look there are people in Pakistan who liked this film coz it was a huge hit. The photography is impressive, the print/ sound is spectacular so those quibbling about "technology" shouldn't be expecting a Matrix in a rural Punjab setting, with the water buffaloes and all.

All that is fine, except that I cant relate with majajan or choorian coz I've grown up in an urban setting and in a different atmosphere where people behave AND look different. There are tons of others in Pakistan who totally feel alienated by such films, just like the gujjars and jatts have alienated us. So PLEASE, Saqib Malik, Shoaib Mansoor, Samina Peerzada, PLEASE come up with films which appeal to the urban sensibilities of the population!

Re: Pakistani film Majajan... Looks and sounds impressive.

^^ still these movies are not showing any rurar setting. PTV dramaz like "Rahain" or "waris" n many other have done a better job. so being lame n stupid is not an excuse for presenting those masses.
