“I was walking home from my school and I went to the store to buy a toy for my niece,” she said, staring at the floor of the office. “While I was looking at things a guy pressed a handkerchief on my nose. I fainted and was kidnapped. Then four men gang raped me.”
As she shared details of her days in captivity and multiple rapes, she kept repeating, “I want justice, I will not stop until I get justice.” After three days, she was finally able to escape she said. As she spoke, her father gently tapped her head. He said he tried to get Kainat’s alleged rapists arrested, but instead he was rebuffed by the police.
Discuss.
Of course this is great, but is this still a tradition in Pakistan?
Re: Pakistani Family Defies Tradition: Refusing to Kill Daughter
Cold hard truth is people have to earn respect for them selves. Its rarely given.
More rape victim tell their stories and fight back, more rape victims we will have fighting against the system.
(victims include their families)
Re: Pakistani Family Defies Tradition: Refusing to Kill Daughter
Wow.. she’s lucky to have such a supportive familiy but how sick is it that ppl have tried to go after them even after moving..
Are these tribal village punishments not illegal? I wish the gov would at least try and prosecute and make an example to discourage this medieval cr*p.. On a side note do those elders not understand the difference between consensual and non-consensual sex? (and if they don’t I wonder if the men were punished for ‘sex outside of marriage’ - I’m guessing not..)
Re: Pakistani Family Defies Tradition: Refusing to Kill Daughter
I think there is a vicious circle when it comes to the Pakistani court system. The local judge said that there was no corroborative evidence on record to prosecute the men in this case. And that is because the police doesn't take rape victims seriously, therefore, don't order rape kits in a timely manner. So no material evidence can be collected, which means there is no case.
That leaves the judicial system in a bind, I am sure they WANT to prosecute these men, but it would be against the law at this point.
