Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Good. Hang him.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) – The doctor who is suspected of helping the CIA target Osama bin Laden will be charged with treason, Pakistan’s information ministry said Thursday.

“A case of conspiracy against the state of Pakistan and high treason is made” against Dr. Shakeel Afridi, the information ministry said, summarizing a commission’s investigation into the death of the al Qaeda leader.

Afridi is accused of helping the CIA use a vaccination campaign to try to collect DNA samples from people who lived in bin Laden’s compound.

The United States “has repeatedly asked” for the release of the Pakistani doctor, a U.S. official said Thursday. The official declined to comment further on the treason charges.

Pakistani security forces detained the doctor in July, a senior Pakistani security official said at the time. He remained in custody Thursday, but it was unclear whether an attorney was representing him.

A May 2 raid by U.S. Special Operations Forces killed bin Laden at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The Guardian newspaper reported earlier this year that in the course of gathering intelligence for the raid, the CIA recruited a Pakistani doctor to run a vaccination program in the area. The goal was to try to obtain DNA evidence from bin Laden family members, the British newspaper said, citing unnamed Pakistani and U.S. officials.

Any DNA obtained from the people in the compound could then be compared with a sample from bin Laden’s sister, who died in Boston in 2010, as evidence the family was in the compound, the newspaper said.

Neighborhood residents told CNN that two women who appeared to be nurses visited homes and offered free vaccinations.

“This was one very small piece of a very large intelligence effort to determine that bin Laden was located at the compound,” a senior U.S. official told CNN over the summer.

The vaccination campaign occurred shortly before U.S. forces raided the compound, the senior U.S. official said.

“People need to put this into some perspective,” the official added. “The vaccination campaign was part of the hunt for the world’s top terrorist, and nothing else. If the United States hadn’t shown this kind of creativity, people would be scratching their heads asking why it hadn’t used all the tools at its disposal to find bin Laden.”

The Pakistan commission’s report also said the house where bin Laden lived would be turned over to the city’s civilian administration, and that authorities had finished questioning members of bin Laden’s family.

That means the commission’s restraining order that required the family members to remain in Pakistan during its inquiry can be lifted, Thursday’s statement said. The order barred Pakistani authorities from handing over bin Laden’s family members to officials in other countries.

The commission is continuing its investigation

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

this is my personal thinking
you can not hang him before treason is proved ?those who sheltered osama should be tried for treason unless he was there under official policy . i dont think america will let this doctor to be hanged , let us see the final investgation report , no court will hang him on charges of collection of samples .

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Hang him indeed. Hang the Pakistani major as well.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

If they hang this guy it will give credibility to the right wing militants and their supporters. The doctor has not committed treason.

The pakistani authorities should find another scapegoat for this embarrasing debacle.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Why hang the Doctor?

Why not hang the greedy Generals who eat and feed luxuriously whilst the masses in Pakistan scrape around for simple meals?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

What happened to your version of drama baazi? I remember that you did not believe OBL was ever present in Abbotabad and killed by Americans in covert operation. So why do you want to hang doctor or major for an incident which did not happen?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

He was spying for a foreign agency, and the fact that America (afridi dude and his nurses) used vaccination program for this purpose is even more nefarious since people already are doubtful about vaccination (Pak-india-A'stand- Nigeria are polio spreaders). I think only Peter Bergen on CNN was reasonable about it as he compared it to the Jonathan Pollard case. This Michael Rubin guy was very blah blah this that and I can from his name why he was all more loyal than the king.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Because he worked for a foreign agency and provided fake vaccinations.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Do you know how many leading Pakistanis are working for foreign agency? If that is the criteria of hanging then start hanging with them first.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

There were many shortcomings in the whole Bin Laden thing.

  1. Why were the radars shut that day - who ordered it and why?
  2. If the radars were not shut, why has no one manning these radars been court marshalled.
  3. Some say the Army was in the know - has any enquiry been done to verify this?
  4. How was such an 'internationally wanted person' staying in Abottabad, who was protecting him and why?
  5. By arresting the 'Doctor'& charging with treason; Pakistan is showing to the world that 'Bin Laden' was indeed a protected person, and his killing is a betrayal / treason..
  6. Why did the ISI head not know about 'Osama' or this USA raid? Is he incompetant? Why has no one court mashalled him or why has he not resigned.

A lot of questions need to be answered, and a lot of dirt uncovered, before Pakistan can recover from this mess,

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

^ No, I think pakistan is showing that, instead of going to the US, the doctor should have gone to the pakistani authorities with that information.

Sacha, I really don't know what to say if you are just being naive or being tongue in the cheek with that foreign agency remark...

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

This the same memory that had Musharraf running to the Chinese for 2 weeks after Sept 11th? You remember incorrectly. I do not believe the Pakistani military nor the ISI was complicit in the hiding of OBL. They were incompetent.

Lastly Doppleganger has it right. Working for a forigen intelligence agency is treason. Or do you think allowing the ISI to turn American assets into their own would be acceptable?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

I dont think he should be hanged, but he should get a jail term lengthy enough to deter other people from doing similar acts.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

This doctor is an idiot he should have cut a deal with Mr. 10 percent and live happily after. His greed to enjoy the riches which Americans paid him lead him to this predicament. Now he is paying for it.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Our very political leaders and military are busy spying and working for foreigners....why is it wrong that a citizen of Pakistan decides to do the same?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

No my memory is perfect. It is you lied about China getting WTO membership before 9/11. So you now believe that covert operation by Americans in killing of OBL in Abottabad was true. Then start hanging the top military personnel who gave him safe haven for this so called terrorist of the world, if you are honest, which I doubt very much. You just want to hang him becasue he or major created embarrassement and humiliation for the top military leadership.

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

Yes that is why you made that false claim about Musharraf right. Also I clearly stated that Chinese accession to the WTO happened in 2005. But it was decided before then that China would be accepted into the WTO. What they needed to do was implement the necessary agreed procedures that requires years of administrative work.

How about we do something simple. Sachaydino show me where I said the covert operation was not true?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

He should be tried for treason and should be made a horrible example

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

from the last seventy eventfull years, america has been military ,political, strategic friend in need, partner of pakistan , and still it is a partner *, firstly it should be decleard an *enemy country but you can not * , c.i.a. is walking talking and operating in pakistan , lacs of people knowingly or unknowingly must be cooperating with them , may be one of you be tricked to work for i.s.i. and you dont know it is not i.s.i. it is c.i.a. , should you be hanged?. adopt a clear stand . an* enemy of the humanity **was caught and killed inside cantt. how many people have been hanged ? oh yes this dr. is being prepared. a real shame ,why people are venting their frustration on poor doctor and major , because he embrassed the i.s.i. and helped to catch the thief in act of stealing ?

Re: Pakistani doctor faces treason charges after bin Laden raid

If he guilty and it looks that way definitely he should be punished, how can you go so low to offer vaccination for poor people but really you taking peoples DNA!! this doctor if guilty is a low life traitor but what about the leaders zardari and others they agents of america they should also be hanged.
