KARACHI: Najah Ghassan, 18, will represent Pakistan at Miss Earth, 2003 international beauty pageant being held in Manila on November 9, Naomi Alseworth of the Miss Earth Pakistan Organisation told reporters here.
“Natasha Newcombe, Miss Pakistan 2003, is unable to attend Miss Earth this year, as she has her exams in November, and I believe she has a very valid reason and therefore we selected Ms Ghassan for this year’s event. She unfortunately couldn’t represent Pakistan last year, and we believe she deserves it,” she said.
“I am all ready to be the environmental emissary from Pakistan for the Miss Earth contest,” Ms Ghassan said.
She said winning or losing was not important to her. “The most important thing to me is to bring my country to spotlight, promote awareness of environment issues among the participating countries and introduce Pakistan as a new tourist destination,” she said. Ms Ghassan was part of the turmoil that hit Pakistani pageant scene in 2002, with girls being chosen, replaced and reinstated. Now she’s back, and in addition to being a pageant star again, she’s debuting in a Lollywood flick. You can see her dancing all the way to stardom this October in Manila, where her film producers plan to premiere it.—www.pageant.com
I am the reigning champion of speed skating in Pakistan.
I am also the ski champion
surf champion and all global sports that do not have an official governing body in Pakistan.
What i don’t get is why do you people get so bent out of shape. Is she hurting anyone of you? But guess what…Khalid Sheok Mohammad killed Deniel Pearl… but I guess that is understandable.
Jumping from one extreme to the other won’t get you an answer. She doesn’t represent Pakistan, that’s all there is to it. Unless Pakistanis are prepared to hold these events on their own turf then this is just exploiting the name.
Amna Haq or Iman Ali (I think - might have been someone else) went to India to do model shoots which they couldn’t have done in Pakistan and I don’t have a problem with that. They were going as individuals so that’s their choice.
But I don’t think it’s right that these girls go there representing Pakistan who are they trying to kid?
If pakistan had a beauty pageant..fine.. but it does not. and I am tired of seeing chicas crawlign out of the woodwork and representing Pakistan in an event..
I dont have an issue with a pageant, heck if ppl want to do it, let them do it..
but the issue is with self declared representatives...I am confused as to how they pick the miss pakistan or afghanistan.. I dont know of a fair system which has local-regional-national competition to pick a winner..somehow one person is just picked...
and if without having a proper process where everyone has the opportunity to try for it if they want to..and without a group that oversees that it is so...these chicas as not real miss pakistan or miss afghanistan..
If I want to be in some country's ski team and Pakistan does not have one..should I just appoint myself as Pakistan's ski champ and start showing up at championships, or if i really want it so bad, i move somewhere where I can really show ehetehr i can be part of a national team or be a national representative.
How were these chicas picked, who picked them, and could some girl in karachi, or multan or pindi have competed in it..
all i know is that I knew ms lawrence in kansas and she went to ms kansas competition, had she won she would have gont o represent kansas in miss america, and had she won there would represent us as miss america in miss world event...but she did not..someone else won in kansas, who did not win miss america..and the girl who won miss america went on to compete in miss world..
this on the other hand..seems like someone just got appointed..
It is her individual prerogative to find belonging to a country that she identifies with. If an Indian tomorow in living in China proclaims to be an Indian and does things that are not common in India, it doesn't dimish or cast aspersions on the society in INdia at large.
the same people who are crying about some great affront to women and Pakistanis in general are the same ones who think One should sign a declaration that you are not an ahmadi on a passport or that women should stay home with the other three wives and make babies.

Well that's just bull$hit. That sort of generalisation is so wide of the mark it's almost funny. if you don't agree that some nobody should wear a Pakistani badge at a beauty pageant you are a fundo with 4 wives and a kaleshnikov. Ha bloody ha.
I don't think she DOES identify with the country she's representing. When the day comes that she can take part in a contest in Pakistan she'll have a case.
Again, like i said I don't have a problem with her doing what she wants as an individual OR telling the world that she's a Pakistani, but the moment she puts that Mss Pakistan belt round her shoulders and gives the impression that she's some sort of representative she's out of line IMO.
there is no issue with her being a pakistani.. but I am still questioning how she was picked to be miss pakistan and not rukhsana in Faisalabad who would have wanted to take part in it too.
what was the process..
could someone else decide to represent pakistan too? there cant be multiple contestants...right....only one per country, so how was this one picked..
there is no religious or cultural spin involved here... the simple question..how did she get picked..
I explained the process for miss america as I understand it...the best contestant wins..starting from a pool of contestants ranging in tens of thousands to one..
like china's table tennis champ...there is a process where teh champion emerges..anyone can try to take a part in that process but at each level the better contestants would move up..weaker ones get eliminated..till there is one..and he is atrue champ. can call himself the table tennis champion of china and represent china in the world championships...
versus if some chinese guy somehow appoints himself as china's yoyo champ... is he reallya champ...who did he compete with...was there a process in place that qualified and eliminated weaker contestants until the best one emerged.
the whole country isnt responsible for the deeds of an individual, is it????
let her do what she wills....
just keep urselves away from such things....
