Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

History can repeat itself. 1992 was the same country. 1992 was Inzi’s year as the hidden talent. This year could be Sohaib Maqsood. As long as they don’t select Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Asad Shafiq, and Imran Farhat. We should have a chance. With Junaid fit again and Irfan taking the new ball. We have the talent, hope that talent gets selected…Ohhh yeah, no Hafeez please. But I think with Hafeez, I am hoping against hope. Hafeez will definitely be there as a specialist opener. He has political & Misbah’s backing unfortunately.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

I agree Hafeez is highly doubtful to play good innings in Australia. But the problem is last two big series you played on flat pitches in UAE. And you've to pick the squad on the base of performance. Same applies to batsmen like Azhar ali or even YK.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

Please …. No such talk that ‘A’ would perform exceptionally in world cup ... or ‘B’ would not perform, as we do not know nor anyone else know what would happen once a player enters the ground. A player could be very bad but may perform on a particular day and another player could be very bad but may not perform on particular day … so, we should seethe average of a player, as that shows expected performance of a player on any particular day.

For instance, in particular match, K.Sangakara (average 58) may get a duck and P.Jayawardene (average 29) makes a century (has 4 test centuries in his name),but when selecting a batsman, one cannot select Jayawardene over Snagakara nor can expect that Jayawardene would bat better than Sangakara (even though in particular inning it might happen). Reason is simple, that is, Sangakara is better batsman than Jayawardene, and that shows in their averages.

I think most unfortunate thing in Pakistan is making someone a hero (or having a favourite) and ignore merit of performance. I would not mind a team that is selected on known past performance and loses than relying on a player with no performance but hoping the player to become unexpected horse performing on the day and make the team win (though such do happens, but it is nothing to do with unexpected horse performing, rather this happens due to fluke on time).

I think, selection should be automatic on performance of last 18 months to 24 months, taking into account batting averages, strike rates and fielding quality for batsman (batting averages and fielding quality for test batsmen), bowling averages, economy rate, strike rate, batting average, and fielding quality for bowlers(bowling averages, fielding quality, and strike rate for test bowlers). For batsmen who are useful bowler and blowers who are useful batsman, one can give them few points for that in selection. Similarly there should be criteria for all-rounders taking their usefulness into account. And after that, if team loses than there should be no problem. Nevertheless, for selection of each and every player (batsmen or bowlers), there should be valid and convincing reason given by selection committee and PCB management to show merit of that player over other available players and thus justify their selection.

Selecting someone without justification … where justification should not be how good that player is (in the opinion of selectors), but justification should be .., ‘why the player is selected compared to other available players’. Personal opinion in selection and clumsy, unconvincing, or stupid justification should be made completely unacceptable … as one is not selecting their personal team but team for country.Selection committee and PCB should be made to understand that style or technique of a player is meaningless, because if style and technique makes difference than it should show in performance (they should have higher batting average and should get selected in team on that basis) and once selection is made on performance, all what matters is included.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

Re first sentence - that is what fans do.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

^^^ You are right, most brainless fans do that. On the other hand, a person with brain give respect to performance. Just imagine, a person (fan of Dhoni) claiming that Dhoni is better batsman than Tandulkar and then defending that too ... what would you call that person?

Anyhow, if such attitude is taken by Selection committee and Cricket board, than only result would be destruction of national team.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

I agree.

Re: Pakistan world cup preliminary squad

There was one post calling Younis a gentleman. He should have been booked for beating up a fan who accidentally tripped in front of him. Pretty much criminal conduct.
