Pakistan Woman Councilor Beaten, Paraded Naked

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan’s leading rights group said Sunday it was shocked at the public humiliation of a woman councilor beaten and paraded naked through a village on the orders of a powerful landlord.

The News Sunday newspaper said the incident happened on Dec. 7 in a village near Sialkot, an industrial town north of Lahore.

It said in an ordeal that lasted several hours, the woman, the widowed mother of seven, was beaten, stripped and paraded naked through the village by the landlord and his sons after she refused to back his candidate in a local election.

Kamila Hyat, director of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said the incident was not the first of its kind.

“At least four similar cases have been reported this year,” she said, adding the incident was indicative of the low status of women in Muslim, male-dominated Pakistan.

“People think they have the license to humiliate women on some pretext or the other, to subject them to this kind of degradation,” she said.

Hyat said more such incidents were inevitable unless the government took tough steps to ensure women’s rights were upheld.

Earlier this year a woman was gang-raped on the orders of a traditional jury in a village in the Punjab province. A Pakistani court later sentenced six men to death for the rape, in a trial which highlighted the abuse of women in rural areas.

After she refused to back someone’s candidate in a local election? Are these people for real? Since when does being a landlord give one the right to dictate opinion to their tenents?

This article indicates that at least some Pakistanis would love the Taliban, or those who share their blind ignorance, to be in power:

The local women should have banded together and taken a baseball bat to those idiots. Can this mental pygmy and those who helped him be prosecuted under Pakistani law?

Anyone in Pak or near Lahore know anything about this? I’d love to know if the locals are patting the landlord on the back, or, will justice be done?

The word LandLord is not an accurate translation of the status of some these people. Pakistan is a Feudal System confronting the modern world, and a lot of the time Feudal's win there. For comparison, the top heirarchy of the Feudal's who are also called Landlords of the lands should be viewed as the Barons of Europe in the 1500 / 1600's. Overlaid on that is power structure with the Military Generals hold the reins and power of decision making. There is a significant overlap within these two structures. The police is totally subservient to these power structures and beside being totally corrupt is also inept. So when you read brutality as given in the article you have to go back half a millenia to european history to grasp what and why something like this takes place. As the article states there are more than one case. This also results in exploitation of children. Only yesterday in one of the Pakistani newspaper there was the result of some survey stating that about 1 child out of 4 is sexually exploited. And today there was an editorial trying to highlight the curse of extensive child labor.

Landlord becomes politician. Politician forms govt. Govt maintains Status quo. Mazdoor gets shafted. Same old drama.

According to you, LandLord is not accurate. All these things have been happening because of Feudalism. How? How come a Govt. do something since these tribes got their own Panchayyat Law? Keep in mind, it was also present before the birth of Pakistan.

PT, Landlord of a building or an apartment complex here in USA has a totally different connotation than a zamindar, or a wadera (how would you translate all that means to a pakistani mazdur or a hare or even a landless kissan). You are absolutely right this has existed long before the birth of Pakistan. This also exits with full force in many rural parts of India, and in Nepal. The situation as I have been told is that the local police is usually on the take from the local “Land lord”, and will normally not register a case against him or his family. Think about it, the Governer had to issue the registeration of the case in this case all the way from Lahore and the local police would not even register the complaint. This is a curse that Pakistan has been living with and unfortunately no Govt. has tackled it sincerely. This system was put into place by the Moghuls and then modified by the british to serve them. I wish there was magic wand that one could wave and fix the whole stupid mess. Only last week there was news in nation that a major exporter in Sialkot had to pay 1 crore rupees as ransom to get free. That news discussed about how people in Sialkot export community have no faith in Police, and suspect that the police is complicitly involved in kidnappings anyway. I have heard of similar cases reported in Indian newspapers.

LAHORE (AFP) - Four people who forcibly paraded a local council woman naked through her village have been arrested by police, officials said Monday.
Naseem Akhtar Butt was stripped, beaten and then forced to walk through Sadra Badra village in Punjab after the landlord and others accosted her over a festering political dispute.
The incident has outraged Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, who ordered the arrests of landlord Mohammad Alam, his five sons and several other accomplices after local police failed to take up the case, Elahi’s spokesman said.
‘The chief minister ordered the arrest of the attackers after local police failed to take action,’ spokesman Malik Mohammad Hussain told AFP.
Alam, two of his sons and another accomplice are among those already in custody.
More arrests are expected, and the chief minister has ordered police to complete their report within two weeks, Hussain said.
‘The motive was political rivalry,’ he added.
Naseem, who was elected councillor in local elections in July 2001, said she was assaulted by Alam and others on December 7 after leaving a mosque where she had launched an appeal for donations to construct a prayer site, according to Hussain.
‘This infuriated her political rivals who pounced on her soon after she came out of the mosque,’ he said.
Naseem had apparently supported Alam’s opponents in recent polls, while Alam’s family had opposed Naseem’s own successful candidacy for councillor last year.
Under the law an attack to ‘outrage the modesty’ of a woman can be punishable by death.
The village of Sadra Badra is about 180 kilometres southeast of Islamabad.

Lady councillor forced to walk naked in Sialkot. Oh yes, I know the answer to that, kill two more CIA employees, no launch another grenade attack on a temple in Jammu and kill the worshippers, no kill the Jews, that’s it, kill the Jews.

We, Muslims are the chosen ones and hence are incapable of such a heinous crime. The plight of the lady councillor has to be the work of an International Zionist conspiracy to defame the “good” name of Pakistan. After that they are going come after our bomb!!!

When in year 712 CE, Muslims decide to invade the sub-continent, they were not parading the opponent’s women naked in the streets. They had a strong judicial system, the backbone of any society whereas Raja Dahir was a dictator oppressing his own people. We all know now which is the society with the strong judicial system and where do the dictators exist. It is high time that instead of poking our noses elsewhere and killing CIA employees, we take a hard look at ourselves and the shameless beasts we have degenerated into. Senseless killings will get us nowhere.

I think all women of Pakistan should parade Naked to protest this despicable crime. The funny part is this is how some lowlifes feel that they have power and this is their way of showing how much power do they have. This is exactly what happens when you combine outdated and archaic beliefs with illiteracy. We can continue to build bombs and ignore focusing on education and decency and right to practice your faith without fear of persecution, incidents like these will continue to happen.

We sure are on the right path: to hell.
