victory was sure for pak after sami tore apart kiwi batsmen, so the rain came to their rescue. well maybe in the 2nd test they’ll start off good so that the rain doesnt bother.

YAAAHHHOOO!!!!!!!!

Well, here’s a tribute, and well deserved I think, to Moin. I didn’t see the match but obviously without his grit we would have been swamped by NZL (and not the rain as it happened). Bravo Moin.

"The streetfighter battles on

You can fault Moin Khan for a number of things.

But one thing you could never fault Moin for is his heart. In what has been a staggered career, with time in the team being shared between him and Rashid Latif, Moin has provided a permanently fragile Pakistani team with a spine; a backbone on which a frail upper body has leant for support. His rearguard action in Hamilton, helping Pakistan at first to save the follow-on target, and eventually the match, was a classic example of the art of a man used to pressure situations. With all recognised batsmen back in the pavilion, Moin adroitly farmed the strike, protecting an increasingly confident Mohammad Sami, while simultaneously working his way belligerently to a fourth test hundred, and arguably his finest Test innings.

He stole singles, turned ones into twos and generally ran the fielders ragged. He saved his best for the landmarks; for passing the follow-on was saved a forehand to the extra cover fence that would have had Lleyton Hewitt pumping his fists. The century was brought up with his own stretched sweep and two contrasting, but equally effective straight drives for a four and a six. Follow-on? What follow-on? Century? No problem? Crisis? Where?

And it isn’t as if we haven’t seen it before. It was he after all, who after Inzamam’s heroics at Auckland in the 1992 World Cup, came in and coolly swept Chris Harris over long-off (yes, swept over long-off) for six, before pulling him for a four to snatch an unlikely victory. And it was he who launched the vicious assault on Glenn McGrath in the 1999 World Cup at Headingley and then did the same to India in the Asia Cup the following year.

But this innings was crucial. …because it reaffirmed the belief of many that not since the days of Miandad, a fellow Karachi streetfighter, has Pakistan had a player willing to grit his teeth, roll his sleeves up and get stuck into salvaging a situation. A man, again like Miandad, not unwilling to innovate to aggravate the opposition. Here is a man used to dealing in crises, a man willing to fight, and a man resourceful enough to survive because he has survived all the Machiavellian plots that various selectors, captains and players have sprung on him over the last ten years.

Hahaa, :k:.. who can forget that Sweep over long off for Six :hehe:

:jhanda:

Well played Pakistan. They turned the tables on the Kiwis. After the first innings the Kiwi commentators were crowing about them being the second best team in the world. Back to earth with a bump.

The credit goes in main to two people Moin and Sami. There were other good contributions by Hameed and Shabbir as well.

One point I would like to make here is that every player can have an off day. When Sami was not bowling well in the first innings we were at him and wanted him out of the team. We should get over such reactions and give a player time to prove himself over the match or the series. We tend to overreact which is not good, myself included.

Inshallah with Shoaib back for the next match, i would like to see the NZ players face the likes of Shoaib, Sami, Shabbir and Kaneria. They will be a handful for them and Inshallah victory will be ours.

A jolly good show by our boys. :k: :jhanda:

NZ Test ends in draw](BBC SPORT | Cricket | NZ Test ends in draw)

1st Test, Hamilton, day five (close):
New Zealand 563 & 96-8 drew with Pakistan 463

The first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan has ended in a draw after rain and bad light brought play to an early close on the final day.

New Zealand held an overall lead of 196 on 96-8 in their second innings when the teams were forced from the field in the final session.

Paceman Mohammad Sami was the chief destroyer, returning figures of 5-44.

The second and final Test starts at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Boxing Day.

With the morning session lost to the weather, New Zealand abandoned hopes of scoring quick runs.

After 10 overs the score had edged up from an overnight 4-0 to 13 when Sami struck, taking out Lou Vincent (four) and Stephen Fleming (nought) in the space of five balls.

In a 13-over spell, in which he fired the ball down repeatedly in excess of 93mph, Sami took 4-32, followed by another after tea to snare his second five-wicket haul in his 12th Test.

His midas touch extended to the field where a brilliant throw from the deep had Craig McMillan run out at a time when New Zealand needed to survive rather than pick up runs.

Umar Gul was nearly as menacing as Sami, and had Mark Richardson caught behind and then Chris Cairns clean bowled in successive balls. Jacob Oram staved off the hat-trick.

But then Daniel Vettori and Oram steadied New Zealand with the innings’ best partnership of 43.

Oram was New Zealand’s top-scorer, unbeaten on 23 after 85 minutes at the crease.

Miandad criticises NZ tactics](BBC SPORT | Cricket | NZ tactics criticised)

Pakistan coach Javed Miandad accused New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming of being negative after the first Test in Hamilton ended in a draw.

The hosts made 563 in the first innings but let Pakistan off the hook after they had stumbled to 285-6 in reply.

Bad weather halted play on the final day after Mohammad Sami had reduced New Zealand’s second innings to 96-8.

Miandad said: “In my opinion, when you are defending 563 you have to attack more.”

The former Pakistan Test star added: "He [Fleming] let our batsman settle down and we took the time and got past the follow-on mark [364].

"I feel the bowlers didn’t attack the stumps enough and they bowled a line just waiting for our batsmen to make a mistake and that was to our advantage. They didn’t try to make our batsmen play.

**Once Pakistan get a sniff they’re a very tough side

New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming **

“Had that been my team, I would have said we must attack and make sure the other team didn’t make the follow-on.”

Fleming admitted his side loosened their grip on the game, describing the final day’s play as a “disaster”.

“It was a tough day and we played accordingly,” said the home skipper after claiming the Man of the Match award for his superb first-innings 192.

"We knew we couldn’t win the match, Pakistan were the only side once the rain hit that could win.

“They had nothing to lose and we played like a nervous team that knew there was nothing in it.”

Miandad said he thought an unlikely win was possible as New Zealand’s second innings subsided, but a 43-run eighth-wicket stand between Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori steadied the ship for the hosts.

"When they were 52-7 that was the time, if we had taken a quick wicket we had a good chance.

"But later on, only 30 overs to go and 200-plus to win, it would have been difficult.

“It was a very good day, the team came back and fought very well.”

The second Test gets under way in Wellington on Boxing Day.

i think umar gul is being forgotten here, bowled extremely well i think, this is his first test match abroad and he showed a lot of guts and performed pretty good i think!

so if shoaibi will cum in the next match who will he replace:konfused:…

shabbir got 5… sami bowled well and got 5… umar gul was impressive on the last day

so think they’ll replace danish.

For those who were asking to sack Sami after one bad perforamce in not even a whole match but just an inning, he answered in the perfect way possible. He ran in hard, produced a devestating spell exhibiting accuracy, aggression and what not. Well bowled and well played Pakistan, in the end it was pakistan who earned more points from this match rather than Newzealand.

Awesome Sami!
Now Pakistan has struck a huge psychological advantage ahead of the boxing day test.
With Shoaib back, it will be an all out Kiwi thrasing of the Kiwis.
Pakistan was the clear winnner despite of the draw/

Pakistan may have been denied a win by the weather, but Moin Khan and Javed Miandad had plenty of cause for satisfaction at the end of 1st Test match

Fit-again Shoaib set to play second Test against Kiwis

By Waheed Khan

KARACHI: Pakistan’s controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been cleared to play in the second Test match against New Zealand starting in Wellington from December 26.

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq confirmed that doctors had given Shoaib a clean chit after he underwent a fitness test and he would be spearheading the attack with Muhammad Sami in the second Test.

The first Test in Hamilton ended in an exciting draw on Tuesday with Sami taking five wickets in the absence of Shoaib who was ruled out with an injury for the Test.

But Inzamam said Shoaib had bowled in the nets and done some training and was back to full fitness. "Our bowling would be stronger for the second Test. I was disappointed with our bowling in the first innings of this Test but in the second innings it was good to see the bowlers taking wickets," the Pakistan captain said on television after the Hamilton game.

New Zealand scored a mammoth 563 in their first innings after being put into bat by Pakistan and Inzamam said the bowling had not been disciplined. He said Shoaib’s return would make a difference as he was a match-winner.

"Shoaib, Sami and, don’t forget Shabbir (Ahmed), they all form a strong attack for us."

The Pakistan skipper also praised the batting effort of Moin Khan (137), Yasir Hameed (80) and Abdul Razzaq (48) stating they had played well under pressure.

He said that the performance on the final day of the Test was a confidence booster for his team and it would help them prepare for the second Test.

Meanwhile, Pakistan manager Haroon Rasheed denied there was any controversy about the manner in which Shoaib had pulled out of the first Test on the morning of the match.

"No, there is nothing sinister about his withdrawal. He has been struggling with a groin problem for the last few days and underwent a fitness test one day before the Test.

He was always a doubtful starter for the match," Haroon said from Hamilton.

He said that the team spirit was very high in the Pakistan camp after the way the first Test ended and said Muhammad Sami and Umar Gul’s bowling performance had lifted the team.
