Pakistan complete workout ahead of first New Zealand test
AUCKLAND (AFP) - Pakistan’s warm-up match before the first cricket Test against New Zealand petered out to a tame draw here Tuesday, with coach Javed Miandad seemingly satisfied with what he saw over the three days.
**“This should almost be the (Test) side, depending on a tweak here or there,” he said.
The Pakistan batsmen were almost in one-day mode in their second innings Tuesday, charging at nearly five an over led by Yousuf Youhana who top scored with 67 and a rollicking 62 from Inzamam-ul-Haq as the side raced to 201 for five at stumps.**
Danish Kaneria had earlier tormented the Auckland batsmen to finish with figures of 5-70 as Auckland made 222 all out in reply to Pakistan’s first innings of 318.
Miandad said the final composition of the side for the first Test starting in Hamilton on Friday will be made after inspecting the pitch.
Heavy rain in Hamilton in recent weeks has upset the wicket preparation leading to speculation it will be green and favour the quick bowlers.
The same pitch a year ago when New Zealand played India proved to be a batting debacle with the game all over in less that two playing days.
New Zealand coach John Bracewell who surveyed the wicked Tuesday had his reservations, although he said it was a bit premature to judge.
**“There’s a degree of firmness about the wicket, a tinge of green, I’m sure with several days drying it’ll be a good surface.” **

Hamilton pitch holds the key](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/DEC/021316_NZ-WCI_18DEC2003.html)
Pakistan’s batsmen will be hoping that Inzamam-ul-Haq wins the toss at Hamilton’s Westpac Park for the first Test against New Zealand which starts tomorrow (2200 GMT on Thursday). Two recent matches will leave them nervous as they contemplate batting on what, at its best, can be the finest Test pitch in New Zealand.
Last year, India’s total of 99 was sufficient to gain them a first-innings lead. Wet weather in the lead-up to the match prevented the groundstaff from completing their preparation of the pitch, which continued to provide alarming assistance to seam bowlers throughout the match. Pakistan have had problems at Hamilton too: in their last Test here, three seasons ago, they failed to cope with the extra bounce on the surface and were bundled out for 104 and 118. New Zealand declared at 407 for 4 to win by a whopping margin of an innings and 185 runs, their greatest margin of victory in Test cricket.
However, the pace and bounce also makes it an excellent pitch if the weather remains dry: on the last occasion Australia played there, Steve Waugh rated it one of the finest tracks outside Australia. Fine weather over the last few days has given Karl Johnson, the new groundsman, the time he needs to ensure that a quality pitch is available. Both Johnson and Stephen Fleming believe that the pitch will provide the expected early life during the first session but should then settle down to ensure an even contest.
New Zealand may have thrashed them the last time they played here, but the current Pakistan unit has a far more cohesive feel to it. This squad also has significant firepower that wasn’t available last time around – Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami missed that Hamilton Test with injuries. With both being available this time, New Zealand’s opening batsmen will await the result of the toss quite anxiously as well.
In fact, Sami had wrecked New Zealand in the first Test of that series – also his debut match – taking 5 for 36 in the second innings as New Zealand lost nine wickets for 26 runs. Shoaib and Sami will be working in tandem should Inzamam bowl first, and it promises to be one of the better shows in town since Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram bowled their side to victory here in 1993.
Speaking to the media before the match, Inzamam said that while Pakistan were confident after their easy win against New Zealand in the home series, they also realised that the team which Chris Cairns captained was without several top players. “I am hoping the momentum can continue but every match is a new one.”
Fleming has said that it will come down to a battle between Pakistan’s fast bowlers and New Zealand’s comparatively slower medium-pace line-up. “We will have to be very disciplined. It is a battle of two very different bowling attacks.” He also added that the pitch appeared a lot dryer than it was before last year’s Test against India. Talking about his own fitness, Fleming said that he had recovered completely from the abdominal strain which had forced him to miss the tour of Pakistan.
New Zealand (probable): 1 Mark Richardson, 2 Lou Vincent, 3 Stephen Fleming (capt), 4 Scott Styris, 5 Craig McMillan, 6 Chris Cairns, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Robbie Hart (wk), 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Daryl Tuffey, 11 Ian Butler.
Pakistan (probable): 1 Taufeeq Umar, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Yasir Hameed, 4 Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Yousuf Youhana, 6 Younis Khan, 7 Moin Khan (wk), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Danish Kaneria, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Mohammad Sami.

Is this playing XI? if the pitch is fast and bouncy then why are we only playing with 2.5 pacers?

Need for speed gives way to wickets as Akhtar lines up New Zealand batsmen
HAMILTON, New Zealand (AFP) - Shoaib Akhtar, the world’s fastest bowler, is eyeing wickets and not speed records in the first cricket Test against New Zealand starting Friday as he leads a relatively fresh-faced Pakistan bowling line up.
The Rawalpindi Express has 28 tests to his name, the same combined total as Mohammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed and promising legspinner Danish Kaneria.
**“There is a responsibility, I have to take it on. I’m going to be a big part of the attack, I want to lead the way for the young team,” said Akhtar, declaring himself fully fit after a calf muscle problem.
And the sometimes erratic Akhtar knows that at his best he is capable of destroying the New Zealand batting line up.**
In his last Test against New Zealand in Lahore last year he took six for 11 to dismiss the tourists for 73 in reply to Pakistan’s 643.
Senior New Zealand batsmen Stephen Fleming and Mark Richardson were among his victims to unplayable yorkers and the New Zealand team, which includes seven of Friday’s line up, were dispatched by an innings and 324 runs.
But the volatile Akhtar has also been in trouble for ball tampering, verbal abuse, throwing a plastic bottle at a spectator and on his last tour here in 2001 his suspect action was reported and he was sent home before the test series which was squared 1-1.
“I had a rough time last time because of an injury and allegations against me,” he said. “It took me about one year to get over it. What is done is done, the circumstances are different and I’m pretty happy to be back.”
Akhtar has twice unofficially topped the 160 kilometres per hour mark but said pure speed wasn’t necessarily his goal here.
**"I’m a more mature bowler, I concentrate more on line and length now and I’m very sensible.
“I’m after more wickets now rather than bowling fast.”**
Now, he’s talkin’…Aye Aye Aye {brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr}
