Pakistan thrash New Zealand in Azlan Shah Cup opener

IPOH:** Pakistan thrashed New Zealand 6-1 in their opening match of 12th edition of Azlan Shah Cup international hockey tournament at Ipoh on Saturday, avenging their 7-1 defeat at the hands of Kiwis in semifinal of Commonwealth Games 2002.**

Pakistan players, backed by new officials – manager Colonel (rtd) Shahid Jaffry, coach Shahnaz Shaikh as well as four new players – started briskly and went in the lead in the 9th minute when Kashif Jawad banged the board to take his team 1-0 ahead.

Muhamad Saqlain doubled the lead in the 27th minute on a short corner rebound. The Kiwis were able to reduce the lead to 2-1 in the closing moments of the first half but Pakistan scored two more goals within first eight minutes of the second half to rock the Kiwis. The goals were scored by Shabbir Hussain and Sohail Abbas.

Well in command at 4-1, the rampaging Pakistanis did not give any breathing space to the New Zealanders and scored two more goals in the 51st and 59th minutes through Rehan Butt and Kashif Jawwad to make it 6-1 for Pakistan.

The important feature of this tournament is that FIH is experimenting to explore possibility of having 3rd or TV umpire to give ruling on decisions referred to them by the field umpires.

The umpires in this event are equipped with microphones so that they can communicate with TV umpire sitting in the stadium. The findings of these experiments would be evaluated before any final decision is taken. The first such experiment was conducted during Women’s World Cup in 2002 held at Perth.

Great effort by Pakistan. At least, the match wasn’t one-sided. I’m happy they performed great against the World Champions.

Great match.

Pakistan go down fighting against Germany

IPOH, Malaysia: World champion Germany held off a late Pakistan surge to open their campaign to defend the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with a 4-3 win here Sunday. Having won the world title last year in Malaysia, the Germans were the overwhelming favourite to win the 12th edition of the tournament and Sunday’s victory was a clear signal of their intention.

Pakistan had opened its campaign here Saturday with a 6-1 thrashing over New Zealand but failed to repeat its performance against the Germans.

Just five minutes into the encounter, Germany opened the account with a penalty corner conversion by Max Landshut before Sebastian Biederlack made it 2-0 through a field goal.

Pakistan have won the championships twice in 1999 and 2000 but their hope of regaining some of their past glory took a knock with the splendid performance by Germany, which banked on their clinical moves and ability to convert short corners into goals.

Three minutes after German’s second goal, Pakistan, which lost to Malaysia in the playoff for the bronze medal in the Asian Games last year, narrowed the gap with a well taken penalty corner by its 26-year-old specialist, Sohail Abbas.

But the goal failed to shake the Germans who relied on swift counter attacks and long passes to penetrate their opponents’ tight marking. Just one minute before the interval, Timo Wess strengthened their lead with the third goal, also from a penalty corner set piece.

**The second half saw Pakistan attacking in numbers with a hope of at least snatching a draw, but it was Germany which increased their goal tally with the fourth goal by Benjamin Koepp.

Pakistan made a last ditch attempt but only managed to score one in the 65th minute through Rehan Butt. On the opening day Saturday, host Malaysia lost 0-2 to Asian Games champion South Korea.**

Pakistan looking dangerous despite loss to Germany](http://www.fieldhockey.com/)

KARACHI: Pakistan’s resounding 6-1 triumph over New Zealand in the opening match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament in the Malaysian city of Ipoh on Saturday should have served as a perfect springboard for the greenshirts’ title campaign in the five-nation event.

A 3-4 loss, however, to world champions Germany on Sunday has shaken the confidence of the Pakistanis a bit and they should now win both their remaining two matches - against South Korea and Malaysia - to assure a place in the final.

The huge victory over the Kiwis came as a perfect revenge for a 7-1 shock at the hands of New Zealand in the last year’s Commonwealth Games in Manchester, it also gave the Pakistanis a great start in their bid to regain the title after a poor show in the previous edition of the tournament held in Kuala Lumpur in 2001.

After winning the title in 1999 and 2000, Pakistan flopped in the very next event and finished a disappointing fourth position.

The tournament could not take place in 2002 because the Malaysian hosted the World Cup last year but is now back, featuring some of the top teams of the world.

The favourites are undoubtedly world champions Germany but there is no denying the fact that Pakistan under new skipper Nadeem ND and a number of fresh faces are looking pretty dangerous.

The last minute pull-out of India has also left the draw of the tournament a bit easier with out-of-form South Korea and hosts Malaysia, the other two participating teams.

Pakistan have entered the tournament with a 3-0 win over Malaysia in a test series played in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. There recent track record against the Koreans is also tilted in favour - a fact that makes them favourites to play Germany in the March 30 final.

The greenshirts’ record in the Azlan Shah Cup - an event initiated in 1984 - is also quite impressive.

According to figures provided by prominent statistician S A Razi, Pakistan have a better record against each of the four competing teams in the Azlan Shah Cup.

The 6-1 win in the opener was Pakistan’s fifth straight win over New Zealand in the Azlan Shah Cup. All the four previous matches were won by Pakistan who have now 25 goals to their credit while seven have been scored against them by the Kiwis.

Their game against Germany on Sunday was Pakistan’s sixth match against the European powerhouse in the event’s history. Out of the previous five, Pakistan have won three and have lost in the other two. They have scored 17 goals while 14 have been recorded against them.

Pakistan have played the Koreans seven times and have never lost against the reigning Asian Games champions. They have won five matches while the other matches ended were drawn.

Against Malaysia, the Pakistanis have a perfect record as they have won all the seven matches which have been played between the two countries in the past. Pakistan have scored 34 goals while the Malaysians have 10 goals to their credit.

Hmm…looks like this Azlan Shah Cup will be interesting. I mean, German is already on a 1st spot; and I don’t expect them to lose the match against Kiwis and Malaysia. Pakistan, South Korea and New Zealand are fighting for the 2nd spot in order to qualify for the Final.

Poor display of Hockey by the Malaysian team. They haven’t won a single game.

Germany closer to final

IPOH , March 24: **World champions Germany stepped closer to the final of the 12th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup when they overcame South Korea to win 2-0 here Monday.

It was scoreless in the first 35 minutes but the powerful Germans settled the encounter with two well-taken penalty corners in the second half.

Timo Wess :grumpy:, who scored against Pakistan, put the Germans in the front in the 41st minute before Max Landshut made it 2-0. **

In the earlier encounter, New Zealand shrugged off a late challenge from Malaysia to win 4-2 and keep their final hopes alive.

With the hard-fought win, the Kiwis regained some pride after a 1-6 thrashing by Pakistan on the opening day, Saturday, and condemned the hosts to their second straight defeat.

New Zealand were two goals up in the first 10 minutes, taking advantage of poor defending by Malaysians. Hayden Shaw converted a penalty corner in the 7th minute before Mitesh Patel made it 2-0.

Malaysia surged forward but were let down by poor finishing by their forwards until the 29th minute, when Muhamad Amin Rahim slammed in the team’s first penalty corner of the match. But New Zealand kept their composure and found the third goal, again from a set-piece, by penalty corner specialist Shaw in the 33th minute.

In the 50th minute, Mohd Riduan Mohd Nasir connected with a long pass from Azlan Misron to beat the oncoming goalkeeper Paul Woodford.

The hosts’ loss was confirmed when Umesh Parag coolly netted the fourth goal a minute before the final whistle for a convincing 4-2 win.

Tuesday is a rest day while on Wednesday, New Zealand will take on Korea and Pakistan will play Malaysia.

So is anyone actually watching the matches, I haven't seen a hockey match in ages. This looks to be a new team, with a lot of new names. Looks like an Pakistan vs Germany final.

plz tell me budding hockey fans which tv channel/s is/are broadcasting the current azlan shah trophy in kuala lumpur, malaysia

Pakistan beat Malaysia, Kiwi beat Korea](http://www.fieldhockey.com/)

Pakistan beat hosts Malaysia 3-1 in their 3rd match of the 12th edition of the Azlan Shah cup hockey tournament under way at Azlan Shah stadium here in Ipoh, Malaysia on Wednesday and raised their chances for making it to the final . Pakistan had earlier beaten New Zealand 6-1 and lost to Germany 4-3.

Pakistan took the lead in 4th minute when Sohail Abbas converted a short corner . Pakistan’s second goal also came on a controversial short corner given by umpire David Gentles . The Malaysian players strongly objected to it as the foul had taken place out side the circle but umpire thought it had taken place in the circle so he awarded a short corner. The TV replay, however , did show that the foul had actually taken place out side the circle and the short corner should not have been awarded that was converted by Ali Raza to give Pakistan 2-0 lead. This goes on to show that the video umpire experiment, presently being conducted during this event , should , sooner or later be made part of the game to avoid such controversial decisions.

The Malaysian team reduced the margin in 49th minute through field goal by Norazlan Rahim. Pakistan got another short corner in 58th minute that was perfectly converted by Sohail Abbas to seal victory for Pakistan by 3-1. Though, Pakistan team scored all three goals on short corners, their forward failed to capitalize on chances.

Pakistan team manager Shahid Jaffry and coach Shahnaz Skahik in the post match press briefing expressed pleasure over the team’s performance and praised the Malaysian team for putting up a brave fight.

Earlier in the firs match of the day, the commonwealth Games runner up New Zealand beat the Asian Games champions South Korea 3-2 in a well contested match.

The South Koreans were shocked in the second minute of the match when Umesh Parag taking advantage of the sluggish play of the Korean defense, had a weak try at the goal that was taken by the Korean goalie on the pad but Hari Bevan was there to pop the ball into the net on the rebound to take 1-0 lead. The Korean team however, was able to score the equalizer in the 17th minute of the match when Lim Woo gave a perfect pass to Seo Jong who banged a brilliant goal from a hard hit reverse swing shot , leaving the Kiwi goalie completely helpless. The score was 1-1 at half time.

The Kiwis came back with another goal in 41st minute when a short corner flick that was going to the goal hit a Korean defender on the body and umpire awarded penalty stroke to the Kiwis that was converted by Hayden Shaw to make the score 2-1. The Kiwis consolidated their lead again in 47th minute when Philip Burrows scored a field goal to take 3-1 lead.

The Korean though making many inroads failed to capitalize on their chances and even missed a penalty stroke in in 20th minute when Seo Jong’s flick was well judged by the Kiwi goalie Paul Woolford . The Koreans were however, able to reduce the margin in 68th minute when Comprising of seven new players that won the Asian Games gold medal last year in Busan, Korean team only have themselves to blame for missing too many chances. .

**Pakistan and New Zealand now have 6 points from three matches while Germany has six from two. Pakistan, however, is ahead of the Kiwis on goal difference . Pakistan has to play it’s last match against South Korea on March 28 who has three points from three games while Kiwis take on Germany . On Thursday Germany faces host Malaysia in the only match of the day. **

thank you ehsan bhaijaan

I think Pakistan might wins against Korea, even if they lose, they can still make it to the finals, because New Zealand is bound to lose against the Germans.

PTV is showin' Live Match coverage.

Good job, Pakistan. Hopefully, we'll take on Korea better than before. Last time, when Pakistan met Korea in the Semi-Final of WC 2000, we lost it by 1-0. That was a intense and tough game.

I havent been following hockey in ages but I think Pakistan hockey has been on decline for a while. I dont recognise any of the current players except I think I heard about Sohail Abbas. The penalty corner specialist. Playing a penalty corner specialist started with the introduction of dutch Bovlider ( I think thats how you spell it ) and now every team has one. I think Pakistan team should concentrate more on playing their natural game. Eurpean teams play with short passes and team work, on the other hand Asians play more with stick work, dribbling etc. I remeber Shahbaz Sr use to take the ball from half line and in flash to the goal. Now we are trying to copy the eurpean style which I personally believe is wrong. Team work is good but they should never remember their old game which at one point gave them the edge over other teams.

Germany get better of Malaysia to reach Azlan Shah final

From Sardar Khan in Ipoh

The world and defending champions Germany after great difficulty were able to get better of the host Malaysian team to win 2-1 in the only match of the day in 12th edition of the Azlan shah cup hockey tournament underway here at Ipoh, Malaysia on Thursday. Under heavy rain it was the fourth consecutive defeat for the Malaysian team.

Despite exhibiting comparatively better display of hockey and maintaining fast pace for most of the first half , the hosts team failed to capitalize on their open chances. On the other hand the German team was also at par to be on the goal missing spree that saw the first half remaining a goal less.

The German team missed at least three chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half due to the brilliant defense of Nor Azlan Bakar in particular. The World champions at last managed to score a goal on set piece short corner when Max Lahshut passed on the ball to Justus Scharowsky who flicked the ball high into the net in right corner of the goalie to take a 1-0 lead in 58th minute.

The German then building up more pressure scored another goal when Michael Green in a hurriedly taken free hit top of the circle passed on the ball to Christoph Bechmann who scored the goal between the pads of the Malaysian goalie Roslan Jamaluddin who stood like a rock against German attack in the first half.

The Malaysian team however, restored some pride when they reduced the margin in 68th minute of the game through a fine deflection of Azlan Misron the on pass given to him by Muhammad Amin Rahim from top of the circle. The German now having 9 points from three matches are sure to play the final . Germany on Friday faces New Zealand while Pakistan take on South Korea . Though Pakistan seems to be the likely contender for the final but any upsetting result tomorrow can change the whole scenario.

Well, great win for Germany. They have defeated every team with the exception of Kiwis, and I don't expect Germans to lose from Kiwis, Hello?

If Netherlands were in the tournament, Dutches would have been on the first spot.

Pakistan v South Korea match will tell who's gonna play in the Final against Germany. Match can goes either way. By lookin' at previous records, Koreans have big advantage on Pakistan as they have beaten Pakistan when we last met in 1999-2000, I reckon. Plus, Koreans movement on the filed is very fast, another advantage. Pakistan doesn't even come close to that.

From Pakistan's point of view, players will need to focus more on Penalty corners. Just look at the previous matches how many goals Pakistan availed on the Penalty Corners. Almost below average line. Sohail Abbas and Rehan Butt would have to play a solid game; and I'm expectin' goals from them.

This is the Big Advantage scenerio of Pakistan; and will be if they able to availed goals. Pakistan is the only side in the tournament, who has acheieved 15+ Penalty Corners and scored 5+ goals.

If match ended in a tie, Pakistan will go through by lookin' at Goal Averages of both teams(Pakistan and South Korea). By losing the game, Pakistan will play for 3rd spot against Kiwis, I reckon.

when is the final?
