An interesting read especially for those who didn’t follow that series 20 years ago. Those were the days when PTV very rarely use to show cricket played outside Pakistan and so we use to be up all night or early in the morning glued to the radio listening to Hasan Jalil, Munir Hussain, Mohammad Idrees etc.
Unfortunately in the end, we were robbed of a famous series victory.
Remember that series very well. The games started around 4 am Pakistan time, and it was broadcast live..... on radio! Believe it or not, there was a great deal of charm and excitement in listening to the radio commentary.
Pakistan and West Indies were the top Test teams in late-eighties. Pakistan would've won the series, except for blatant cheating by umpires (the same story was repeated by the WI umpires in the 2001? series).
In The final Test of the 1988 series in the West Indies was badly marred by the umpiring, where the umpires even admitted later that they were fearful of the crowd, which resulted in Qadir's LBW appeals being rejected. Reportedly the West Indian bowlers were chronically over-stepping by a long way, which at their pace made a difference to the batsmen. The umpires caught some of these no-balls, but not all of them. I believe this may be the Test that has the record for the most extras in an innings.
This is the most classic series i have ever listen to ,yes my brother was a cricket maniac and he was there with the radio all the time and out of curiosity ,i was also listening . Since the 3rd test ,the decider one was so tensed ,it was so thrilling . still remembers .....brillliant .
