Ambition demands an extra bowler

http://blogs.espncricinfo.com/inline/content/image/492602.jpg

Pakistan, like all the major teams, have three banana skins to avoid to ensure qualification and they neatly sidestepped the first one. In their last two one-day series Pakistan have rallied well and developed a consistency about their cricket, which was continued at the cavernous Hambantota stadium.

The surfaces in the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand managed to replicate South Asian conditions, a factor that has helped ensure that Pakistan’s players are decently prepared. Familiar conditions help mask the vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s batting order, allowing the bowlers to make a decisive impact. And it is on that point that Pakistan face something of a dilemma.

The current selection, with batting in depth, is a healthy insurance policy for disaster against a minor nation but less suited to winning the trophy. The extra batsman is probably unnecessary. As the tournament progresses, the better teams will eye up an opening attack of Shoaib Akhtar (past his best) and Abdul Razzaq (short of pace) and lick their lips for a twenty-over run spree. Shahid Afridi might then turn to Mohammad Hafeez but the reaction in the opposition will be further salivation.

Luckily, the tournament format allows plenty of opportunity for tinkering provided those banana skins are stepped over. Bringing in Wahab Riaz in place of a batsman, probably one of the openers, would be the obvious option, with Kamran Akmal pushed up to open. In that scenario, moving up Umar Akmal to split Younis Khan and Misbah-ul Haq might offer more dash up front and maintain some solidity later on.

Pakistan have options. They are playing in conditions that suit them. They are playing with unity and the air of wronged men seeking vengeance. The team selection will soon reveal the extent of their ambitions, and an extra bowler would be a statement of intent.

For Pakistan’s aspirations of causing an upset, choosing too many batsmen might turn out to be the biggest banana skin of all.

ok just kidding inshallah pak will win.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

Waqar said that Rehman is playing because he is the best spinner and he can bat as well. I dont agree with the statement and it shows a kind of pragmatic attitude. Rehman is not a wicket taker like Saeed Ajmal is. Saeed Ajmal will not contain but he will take wickets.. although considering pakistan are relying on Hafeez and Razzaq to see 10 overs through, they are hoping for some containment from Rehman.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

I agree with Saby. This whole strategy of packing the side with all rounders and batsmen is similar to the strategy the indian team adopted in the late 90's and 00's. And we all know how succesful that was. The specialist batsmen to step up and take responsibility without the added cushion of all these extra batters. This World Cup is going to come down to the side that is most successful at taking wickets. These flat tracks will not challenge any batting line up. The difference will be the wicket takers. With Amir and Asif gone, we will rely on Ajmal and Riaz even more heavily. They need to be in the team. Hafeez, razzaq will get taken to the cleaners by quality sides.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

I am just hoping that this combination which served Pakistani team well in NZL works out in this tournament as well and Razzaq does the containing job better than fans expect him to. If he does so in 2-3 matches, maybe then we will see Ajmal back in the team. That will make 4 wicket taking bowlers complimented by Razzaq and Hafeez.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

If Imran and Wasim are in favor of playing Saeed Ajmal than he needs to play the match against Sri Lanka.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

I will not drop Shoaib Akhtar. There is no substitute for out n out pace and Shoaib is still quicker than both Umar Gul and Wahab. He is a wicket-taking bowler. Yes he might go for 6-6.5 RPO but he will also take wickets. I will drop Hafeez.

My team:

Kamran Akmal
Ahmed Shehzad
Younis Khan
Abdul Razzaq (bat him up the order)
Misbah
Umar Akmal
Afridi
Wahab
Umar Gul
Abdul Rehman
Shoaib Akhtar

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

I agree with the above except that for Wahab I would bring in Junaid.

Re: Pakistan VS Sri Lanka | 26th Feb

And for once I do not agree with Imran Khan & Wasim Akram. Saeed Ajmal can be very expensive + at times he acts like a complete paindoo + his running between the wickets is atrocious....he might run set batsman out at the other end.....not to mention his poor catching and fielding.

so Thanks but no Thanks!

Abdul Rehman is doing a decent job at the moment similar to what Tauseef used to do (containment) back in the mid-late 80s while Qadir or Iqbal Qasim took wickets from the other end....there is no need to upset team rhythm and balance just yet
