Pakistan vs South Africa - Test Series

We couldn’t bowl them out under 300, which was unavoidable with missing pace bowling. Though we were able to bowl them out last inning… Everyday is not Sunday. Our openers were able to see off 6 overs, they should be able to do the same for next 6-9 overs and ball won’t be NEW anymore and our batsmen should be able to handle that fairly easy given that they don’t rush to chase the target.

Its possible to win, if our openers can see off next 35 overs and give a century stand (make everyday a Sunday :stuck_out_tongue: ) I am sure we can snatch the victory otherwise a draw gives us the series win :k:

I don’t even want to think about winning (and team should not either) the game until I see the equation 175/(0 or 1) until 1 hours after lunch.

Pakistani batsmen should just try to stick to the wicket. Runs will come automatically because SA will be on offence and they will go all the way attacking to win the game so Pakistani batsmen will find 1s and 2s and occasional boundary.

South Africa set Pakistan challenging target](http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/031027/325/ec99q.html)

FAISALABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gary Kirsten hit his 19th test century as South Africa set Pakistan a target of 302 runs to win the second test.

With the hosts already 1-0 up in the two-match series, Pakistan ended Monday, the fourth day, on eight without loss in six overs and needing another 294 runs.

South Africa had declared their second innings after tea on 371 for eight, Kirsten’s sparkling 118 runs from 232 balls and in 316 minutes (11 fours and one six) bringing them back into the match.

Taufeeq Umar and Imran Farhat, who have posted three successive century stands for Pakistan in the series, held firm before bad light forced play to end four overs early and left the match intriguingly poised.

South Africa, who won a test in Pakistan at the same ground in 1997 by bowling out the home side for 92 runs, will be spurred on by the knowledge that Pakistan’s highest successful victory chase at the venue was just 188 for seven against Sri Lanka in 1991-92.

Pakistan lost here to the Sri Lankans in 1995-96 after being bowled out for 209 runs while chasing a victory target of 252.

It was Kirsten’s second century on this ground and allowed South Africa to dictate terms on a sluggish day of cricket. Pakistan did not take the second new ball and bowled 127.3 overs with the same ball.

It slowed the scoring rate on a day when Pakistan’s bowlers also struggled with fitness problems.

Leg spinner Danish Kaneria did the bulk of the work with 27 consecutive overs, in contrast to veteran leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed who bowled just four overs and Abdul Razzaq, who was not introduced until the 58th over of the day.

He responded by taking three wickets.

Struggling with a bout of 'flu, Razzaq rattled the Proteas with two wickets in two balls.

On the second and third balls of his fourth over of the day, he had Kirsten caught in the slips by Taufeeq Umar and then bowled Boucher.

Kirsten resumed in the morning on 27, with South Africa on 140 for three.

He played a flawless innings and shared valuable stands of 90 with Jacques Kallis (43, 113 balls, 3 fours), a new record for the fifth wicket against Pakistan, and 85 from 211 balls with Neil McKenzie (35) before lunch.

The 35-year-old left hander, who carried his bat for 100 not out at this ground in 1997, completed 1,000 runs on the subcontinent in 10 tests against Pakistan and India.

During the day Taufeeq became the first Pakistani player to take six catches in a test.

Going for a draw is always a negative approach in my mind, they should play off the new ball, and start scoring runs.
Asim Kamal should be promoted ahead of Hameed and Inzi, so he can work the ball rather then risk his wicket when runs are needed in the end to win.

A good strategy in this case should be to take the match to a point where you CAN NOT lose it. Only then unleash an assault for a win. If Pak can bat thru Tea with losing only a couple of wickets and needing another 140 to win, then they can go for the target. If they lose two or more wickets after TEA, then they should play for the draw.

Spot on. But remember England lost 8 wickets in the final session in 2001 test series against pakistan. Though Pakistan had Waqar, Wasim and Saqlain in very good form and SA only have Pollock but its still possible.

With Pakistani batting line up anything is possible. :)

Pakistan should not play for a draw. In fact Pakistan should never ever play for a draw. Imran and Steve Waugh never play to draw the match. And thats what sets mediocre captains from great ones. teams have chased 300 runs in 50 overs. We have a whole day to go. If we don't quick wickets, top order OR middle order, I dont see why we cannot win.

Pakistan lost 6 wickets in the first session of day 3, and that too when they were just trying to defend and not playing aggressively.

My best advie would be to play sensibly in the first session, and score 60-80 runs, and play attacking cricket for the next 2 session.

So far Pakistan has only score 230-250 in a days play.

It was because it started with a new ball, Imran already had his century so he had almost lost his hunger for runs while rest of the batsmen struggled to face new ball. If Imran and Taufeeq can age the ball then chances are brighter.

With Pakistan cricket team ANYTHING is possible - the most unpredictable team in the world I would say ..

Tomorrow, Pakistan need 294 more runs to win this match from 90 overs...it should be possible...

If we play the first 60 overs at an RR of 3.00 to save most wickets(like 6-7 wickets)...this should yield some 180 runs...and leaves us with 114 more runs to win from the remaining 30 overs...

The last 30 overs we can play ODI style at an RR of 4.00...to win this match...victory is possible! :)

I don't have much time to criticize the SA 2nd innings or Pak's fielding/bowling/captaincy at this time...

I hope Miandad remebers his words when he said that SA chokes when it comes to crunch matches ...... Since It has ben Pak who choked during the ODI series (in losing three in a row to lose the series) it's time to show some resolve to go through this

cheer up atleast in ODI youhana is the only player to exceed 1000 runs in this yr

Yousuf Youhana (PAK)

Yousuf Youhana scored 60 runs from 75 balls in the ODI against South Africa at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in a match which commenced on the 10th October 2003. It was his thirty third half century, and he becomes the first player to exceed 1,000 runs in the 2003 calendar year. Players Scoring Most Runs in Year 2003

achhah jee…

Imran Farhat gone. Kallis strikes.

thats a wrong decision by umpire :frowning:

baichara imran :frowning:

phoenixdesi inshallah :jhanda:

Rock solid opening partnership broken the only way it could be on the final day - a catastrophic umpiring error by Simon Taufell. The ball missing off stump by almost another set of stumps and Farhat is SAWN OFF lbw to a joyful Kallis who can't believe his luck.

Quite unbelievable decision fom a normally dependable umpire and could have a big bearing on the game. Yaasir immediately hits a 4 then hit on the arm by Kallis requiring treatment.

I thought the best way to chase the target was exactly what Imran and Taufeeq were doing. Rough up the ball, keep wickets in hand but the damn umpire had other plans. I guess as Xtrmem said that was the only way Africans were going to get the opening pair out.

In the 8 balls he has faced Yair has been hit twice and almost got run out. Plus he has hit 2 boundries. He needs to keep his eyes on the ball. Plus a little bit halwa puri with Inzi wont hurt him eithe ;)
