All this discussion above about replacing A with B and X with Y is pretty mindless. When these big guys cannot deliver when it matters, *fringe players like Hameed and Kamal cannot be expected to work wonders. *
point noted but our openers apart from Saeed Anwar have always been fringe players i.e. nothing special. I mean Mudassar Nazar, Mohsin Khan, Rameez Raja and Aamir Sohail were decent rather than great players. If your fringe players don't perform it puts immense pressure on your middle-order and as much talent and experience the latter may have they are always more likely to crumble if the openers fail repeatedly. I know this test was an exception. Malik and Misbah are not test class batsmen and are there in the team by default. MY and Inzi perhaps struggled because they have not played any serious cricket recently.
