overall quality of cricket has been pathetic these days.
India went to England and Aus and suffered most embarrassing defeats.. lost 8/0..apparently india was ranked among top 2 teams then...i mean they lost everything on fast pitches.
Same Australia came back to India and lost everything 4/0.....so Aussies cannot play outside their home!
England went to india and actually beat Indians 2/1..... given the circumstances, that was unbelievably skillful...so it looked like England was THE team who can play pace and spin both ... but time out
same English team was beaten 3/0 by mighty Pakistanis on spin tracks...most embarrassing defeat..so England is not that good either
SA..so called champions destroyed Pakistan and everyone else but as soon as they faced unfamiliar tracks, they bundled in no time...
so who is a true champion? No one..ranking does not mean much to me.

Congrats to the Pakistan cricket team on a well deserved victory…this is a big victory against a very good team...so it does mean something!

One more thing…May god bless Misbah but in my books he is quickly becoming one of the biggest role models Pakistan has ever produced…not because of his batting skills alone but because how composed, mature, honest and sincere he has been…took the team when we were completely destroyed … since then he led from front…no scandal, no drama, no gambling, no woman issues, no charas, no religious fanaticism nothing…100% professional focused on game. I dont recall one single player since 70s who has been free of scandals in Pakistani cricket.

The fruits of too much T20 and ODIs.
Even if the players are not the one who are specialist in slogging, over all temperament of the batsman (spare few cool heads) is not 100% test material.
Remember the bowlers are no where what we had in last two decades. So there should have been same or more draw tests. Instead we are seeing more results than ever before and a lot of tests are completing on 4th day.

Yeah, Pakistan beating SA must mean SA is a pathetic team and not that Pakistan was better team in this match

asif is saying that if SA wins next test match given the conditions, it will be an upset…that was the basis of my hypothesis…did you get it or still struggling? that No 1 team win against a No 6 team will be considered an upset. It is a loaded statement.

it was an academic exercise…I then took this hypothesis/question and tested against several other top ranked teams Aus, India and England and showed that the exact same behavior applies on them as well…apnay ghar may sher and outside matii kay dher
so how did i insult Pakistan team? my net conclusion was that unlike windies of 80s and aussies of 90s who used to win in alien conditions as well, today’s best test teams are not as good as numbers show.
If you had a bit of logical mind you would have realized that I was actually favoring pakistan by suggesting that when we lose 3/0 to SA or Aus in their countries, we return them the favor on our pitches as well. So they are not really no 1…rankings dont mean much.
If we beat SA 2/0 and we have already beaten england 3/0 then we shd not be no 6 and/or they shd not be no 1 and no 2…there is something seriously wrong with ranking system. maybe more weight-age shd be given to a win outside home ?..why do England play so many test matches at home for example every summer?
that is what i was expecting for our discussion..and look what you came up with

How can in Test match ranking India be at number 2 while they lost to England at home ......And I am sure that ICC is biased towards India in the rankings

but seriously, this ranking game is a bit too much now
ICC needs to be transparent. if i were sethi, i would pose some simple questions?
how come Aus/India/England/SA keep on getting 3, 4 or 5 test match series but Pak/NZ/SL/WI usually get 2 -match series? why? we need a clear policy..no more bul****
how come Pak gets a 3 or even a 4 test match series when we visit Aus or SA or england in alien conditions but when they visit us on our home ground, we always get a 2 test match series? why? that is a huge disadvantage to us...we also want to beat SA 3/0 at UAE to better our record.
we played Aus last time in 2010 and lost 3/0..how come Aus did not play against us at UAE since then? where is the home series against them so that we can better our record?
why England and india playing so many matches at home especially england? change the rule..a home win shd be worth 50% or 75% vs an outside home win.
and the list goes on and on
and then i will say that keeping in mind the points that i raised above **and by the way **looking at some of the numbers (that I had elaborated in my original post - how India lost 8/0, England lost to us 3/0, aussies lost 4/0 to india blah blah), can you please help me understand why are we No 6/7 and they are No 1/2/3 ?

Sir you have a point. True there is no outright superior test team right now who can play well outside their comfort zone… like the dominant Aussies (1999-2007) or the mighty Windies of the 70s and 80s. England and SA are the better sides right now but I expect them to struggle on sub-continental/UAE/spinning tracks. RSA might still perform better in the second test but unlike England they do lack a world-class test spinner.
