Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

They wouldnt drop Hafeez. (his bowling adds variety to our attack specially in absence of Ajmal). Shahzad may be the one to go. Although his record against NZL was really good and maybe he will get his touch back. I think management will give him another go against them.

Afridi’s five seals Pakistan victory

           The Bulletin by Sahil Dutta

March 3, 2011

            ***Pakistan** 184 (Umar 48, Misbah 37, Baidwan 3-35) beat **Canada** 138 (Hansra 43, Afridi 5-23) by 46 runs*

[

Afridi's next over all but sealed the match with a slider rushing through Jimmy Hansra's defences. Hansra had played with the sort of calculated daring that underpinned Ireland's success in Bangalore but could not last long enough. Afridi was aloft in celebration a ball later when he bowled Harvir Baidwan to set up a hat-trick delivery. Though he didn't get it, he sealed his five-wicket haul when Wahab Riaz held a Tyson Gordon skier.

As if to emphasise his hold on the occasion Afridi even managed to conjure another scalp after finishing his bowling stint, hitting direct from mid-on to catch the wheezing Balaji Rao short. It meant Pakistan finished a game with all the zest that was missing from a forgettable batting display.
Were it not for a stodgy 73-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal, Pakistan may well have joined England on the receiving end of a World Cup shock. Before they came together Pakistan were rocking at 67 for 4 and lost five wickets for 44 after their stand was broken. Misbah was as calm as ever and nursed his more volatile partner through an organised, pragmatic and thoroughly un-Pakistani partnership.
Either side of that pair it was a overconfident display as the batsmen lacked the intensity to buckle down and keep the scoreboard moving in the face of an energetic Canada effort. Using the heavy atmosphere and sporting pitch, all the Canadian bowlers caused trouble but it was the contrasting aggression of seamer Baidwan and rotund legspinner Rao who starred, constantly prodding and probing the Pakistan batsmen who were unable to raise their games.
It left Canada dreaming at the half-way stage, but Afridi intervened when his team needed him most.

  • Shahid Afridi has become the first bowler to take three four-wicket hauls in a single World Cup. He is also the fourth bowler to take two five-fors in one World Cup.

  • The two best bowling performances by a Pakistan player in World Cups belong to Afridi, and they’ve come within ten days of each other.

  • Afridi is the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup with 14, and needs only four more to equal the record for most wickets by a Pakistan bowler in a World Cup: Wasim Akram took 18 in 1992.

  • It is only the ninth instance of a bowler taking at least four wickets in three consecutive ODI innings. Waqar Younis achieved this feat on three separate occasions.

  • Canada’s 15-over scores in their three matches have been the three lowest among all teams in this tournament - they scored 35 for 3 against Zimbabwe, 36 for 3 against Sri Lanka, and 40 for 2 today against Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

drats! the Pakistan team won. I was hoping by some miracle that Canada will win and contribute to avoiding a India Pakistan final which causes too many heart attacks.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

even if Canada had won today it wouldnt have damaged Paksitan's chances of reaching qtr finals.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Afridi is winning hearts and matches at the same time. Hero is the correct word for him. Good going Champ. Now if his bat starts showing results than we have a team that will INSHALLAH go all the way and win the World Cup.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

inshaALLAH we will win :-)

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Abdul Rehman lost out because of Kamran's incompetence.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

:insh:

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Till the NZ tour...Afridi was a loathe...and today I saw a banner in the stadium reading... Afraid-i... :D

With the exeception of Afridi's bowling...our bowling was not that cheerful...let alone the batting...hmmmmmmmm

PS: Bowlers around the world put themselves into work how to get him out...now is time the batsmen around the world would be pondering how to tackle his spins...hmmm

H/L

2nd clip from bottom: @ 05:31 Balaji Rao, Ahmed Shehzad & Umar Gul involved in heated exchange (caution: swear words )

The point is (regardless of who is to blame) even in the heat of the moment players should not be using curse words or behaving like some galli mohalla cricketers. We expect better from them

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Don't worry Inshallah India will lose their matches and not go ahead in the tournament; that way hopefully we won't get any heart attacks. :p

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

good show by Afridi again... as he said.. he is a bowler!!!

didn't catch the match or the highlights.. did canada bowl well or did pak implode?

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

So you are all happy Pakistan won against a bunch of part-timers who do something else to make a living. I am proud of Canadians who wound down the vaunted Pak side in 184 and came within hailing distance of an upset. Somewhere in this thread a total disconnect with reality set in. You are proud of such a slim victory against such a weak side?

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

I think Sri Lankan pitches have something in them for the bowlers unlike the generally flat dust bowls of India & Pakistan. There was some green on the wicket and in overcast conditions Afridi should not have batted first.

The shot selection was abject to say the least but the bowlers did well to bowl Canada out despite defending such a low total

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

you can expect as much as you like, they ain’t gonna change…they are galli mohalla products after all…

It doesn’t show who started it…at the end Ahmed Shehzad got the tongue lashing from harper…so if it was infact Shehzad who excited Rao…then I have just this much to say to Shehzad:

bachay batain apnay Ballay say karo munh say naheen…abhee tum nayay ayay ho…thoree position banao scores say pher batain karna…

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Nope proud of defending a poor score, and using bowling capabilities wisely :D

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Sane guppies are not hailing this victory, just happy & relieved that we did not lose despite a poor show with the bat

But it is not the first time that a weaker side has seriously challenged an established cricketing nation. Upsets happen in almost every world cup. We already saw Ireland beat England. That was a total shock. Forget that it was Ireland, how many times does one see even good sides chase down almost 330 from 111/5....almost never!

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

i completely agree.
it's not like pakistan has never defeat a stronger team, we all know pakistan is definitely capable of it. We won, what are we suppose to do, cry? because our batsman were lame? i think it's all part of a game. take it with a good spirit, or criticize all you want. At the end of the day, we are topping the rating table.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

watching h/ls for Pak batting..
pitch had bizzare bounce and also clearly Pak. batsmen looked very uncommitted and non serious....
Not good.

Re: Pakistan VS Canada | 3rd March

Maybe the Canadians should take a lesson or two from the bunch of part timers of Ireland who do something else to make a living, than they might not get humiliated by every team in the tournament. here is to your wish they keep coming close and losing for the next millennium. Cheers.
