Pakistan village renamed Midlands after charity helps
A village in Pakistan devastated by flooding has been renamed Midlands after a West Midlands charity raised money to help rebuild it.
Walsall-based Midland International Aid Trust raised £113,000 to help the 20 million people thought to be affected by the monsoon floods last year.
The village of Lal Pir, now named Midlands, had been cut off by water.
Mohammed Aslam MBE, the trust’s founder, has been visiting the country to oversee how the aid is spent.
Mr Aslam, 71, originally from Kashmir, said he wanted to make sure every penny of aid went to the people living in the region.
He said in August he could only reach Lal Pir by boat.
Now all 36 homes which were destroyed have been rebuilt, at a cost of £2,000 each, after the charity provided the villagers with materials and tools.
The floods struck the north of the country in August. At least 1,500 died in the deluge.

Oh good. Lets rename Islamabad after Radcliffe as well

Re: Pakistan village renamed Midlands after charity helps

Well those who looked after them they are being grateful to them. Suppose we could name it Zardari or Gilani for doing jack all for these guys.

Re: Pakistan village renamed Midlands after charity helps

why did they have to rename the village, that shouldn't be how charity orgs work though.

Re: Pakistan village renamed Midlands after charity helps

I am not disagreeing. Considering the Radcliffe award we should have a few cities named after him too.

Re: Pakistan village renamed Midlands after charity helps

lal pir sounded more cool....whats the point of naming it midland when its not actually in mid..i think local member of parliament from that area should have been named midland instead of changing the name of village.
they should settle for "redsaint" since the spirit remains same and its in english too..might satisfy the donors

And since we have The Faisal Mosque in Islamabad , named after the late King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, who supported and financed the project.

My college - D.J Sindh Govt College , the College was founded in 1887, chiefly through the efforts of a Sindhi philanthropist, Mr. Diwan Dayaram Jethmal whose name it bears.

then *Nadirshaw Eduljee Dinshaw *(NED) University of Engineering & Technology , karachi - the oldest degree-level engineering institution in Pakistan !

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital , hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, originally established by Sir Ganga Ram, a Civil Engineer in the British Government at Lahore in 1921.

and the list goes on and on - so this one is not an exception !.
