Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

WASHINGTON -
Afghanistan’s president is calling on Pakistan to close extremist schools and looking for support from President Bush in his campaign against “places that teach terror.”

“There will not be an end to terrorism unless we remove the sources of hatred in madrassas and the training grounds,” Hamid Karzai said before Tuesday’s White House meeting.

Rising Taliban violence and an unprecedented narcotics trade were also on the agenda — possibly along with a request for more U.S. money to stabilize Afghanistan.

Karzai said Sunday his country would be “heaven in less than a year” if it received the $300 billion the United States had spent in
Iraq.

As it is, Karzai said at a news conference Monday that Afghanistan has $1.9 billion in reserves, up from $180 million in 2002.

In a speech at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars he expressed concern — without elaboration — with “radical neighbors who have very dangerous ideas” and said narcotics had supplanted the growing of grapes, raisins, pomegranates, almonds and other crops.

Struggling farmers need more help, he said. “Give us the roads and we will give you the best grapes in the world,” Karzai said with a smile.

Afghanistan has been suffering its heaviest insurgent attacks since the Taliban regime was toppled in late 2001 in a U.S.-led war.

Karzai has engaged in some sniping with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on countering terrorism. Musharraf has complained Karzai had not done enough.

But Karzai said, “There will not be an end to terrorism unless we remove the sources of hatred in madrassas and the training grounds.”

His meeting with Bush sets the stage for a three-way dinner meeting Bush plans Wednesday with Karzai and Musharraf.

Here last week to see Bush, Musharraf said extremist schools accounted for only about 5 percent of the schools in Pakistan. He acknowledged that “we are moving slowly” against them.

Karzai said he had no objection to madrassas that teach Islam to young people. “We need preachers in our religion,” he said.

But he said it was up to Musharraf to deal with the problem of teaching hatred to young children. “Those places have to be closed down,” he said.

While it is Pakistan’s job, the United States could provide some financial help to get it done, Karzai said.

Musharraf, speaking in New York City on Monday night, said Pakistan was being blamed unfairly for the Taliban’s resurgence. He suggested that Karzai was partially at fault for disenfranchising the majority Pashtun ethnic group and warned that the Taliban cannot be defeated by military might alone.

Musharraf praised Karzai, calling him clearly the best choice to lead Afghanistan as it rebuilds after decades of war, but he also slammed Karzai for suggesting that much of the recent violence in Afghanistan was the result of cross-border attacks from militants hiding in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

“The sooner that President Karzai understands his own country, the better,” Musharraf told the Council on Foreign Relations, referring to alleged favoritism toward ethnic minorities in the Northern Alliance that fought against the largely Pashtun Taliban. “We have a problem with Pashtuns feeling alienated.”

Later, Karzai accepted an honorary doctor of laws degree from Georgetown University.

In brief remarks, he described advances in the social sector in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

In contrast to the Taliban policy of denying education rights to girls, he said girls now account for 35 percent of total school enrollment in the country.

He said 80 percent of Afghans now have access to health services, compared with 9 percent under the Taliban.

Karzai himself is a shmuck, all he knows is whine whine whine. If he is so worried about 'terrorists' coming in from Pakistan why can't he seal Afghan borders? Has he been able to extend his control beyond Kabul yet? He is a useless dummy.

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

Karzai gets his marching orders from India

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

awww, Indians worried about Afghans! :frowning: We appreciate the concern. We’ll soon sort out the ‘extremist school’ problem with Afghanistan. That would make some people very sad. :frowning:

You see, it’s not like Kashmir dispute with Afghanistan. Our interests and their interests coincide. A stable and peaceful Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest.

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

yawn,,karzai, shut up and close down your damn drug production, ya lil drug lord ..

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

heheh.. Captain according to the :rule: , relation between Karzai and Pakistan has nothing to do with Kashmir, so Kashmir kaha se aa gaya yaha Maharaj ji :hoonh: ??? this is :topic:

But alteast i’ve come to know that one thing today, according to you Kashmir should be a part of Pakistan  coz some Pakistanis say Kashmir should be a independent state :hoonh:

Captain he has clearly said that, there should be campaign against “places that teach terror” and I don’t think so he has said anything wrong coz that is also good for Afghanistan, Pakistan and every single contry where terrorists r poking nose and killing innocent civilians exmp: like India heheh..

You just tell me this is right or wrong ???

Places that teach terror should be closed or open :hoonh:

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

The ‘training’ schools are not for Afghanistan alone, I thought you were educated enough to go to root causes.

Lets have a ‘referendum’ under UN control to see whether they want to be part of India, Pakistan or Independend, would India agree with that? I doubt.

We all know what he means by “places that teach terror”, he didn’t want to use Pakistan’s name.

You are playing G W Bush game now, you can’t eradicate ‘terrorism’ without addressing its root causes.

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

^People like to believe that our religion is the root cause...even if they don't say it.

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

What about other muslim majority districts in up,maharashtra, west bengal ,bihar, karnataka, kerala ,andhra etc.. and if the great freedom fight end what to do with muslims (as said by delhi imam,SIMI ) objective of islamisation of India. The truth is that terrorist wont stop even if Paki got Kashmir.

One more thing, if kashmir is separated you can see another bloddbath as you saw in 1947. But here the tragedy is that paki fundas wont get much hindoo blood as their number is very less in Pakistan, whereas India has 16 crore Muslims

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

For a minute I thought wine wine wine

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

and the whining continues.

Karzai: Attacks wearing thin on Afghans
By FISNIK ABRASHI, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - The Afghan public is losing patience with attacks launched from Pakistan, President Hamid Karzai told Pakistan’s foreign minister.

“The Afghan people are suffering from terrorist violence on a daily basis, and the patience of our people to continue to bear this situation is running thin,” Karzai said in a statement Thursday, following Pakistan Foreign Minister Khursheed Kasuri’s visit to the Afghan capital.

As Fraudz also said, this shmuck needs to stop opium trade first, seal off borders so no one can ‘cross’ borders, after all he has the ‘best’ armies/weapons at his disposal to get the job done, or the armies are only to kill Afghanis? He is unable to digest the fact that his very own people are fighting against his regime.

Re: Pakistan urged to shut extremist schools

Karzai is nothing more than a puppet figure in Afghanistan and it his reach of power does not extend beyond Kabul. Most of Afganistan is still rules by tribal war lords. If karzai was doing such a good job, how come under his administarion the drug production of Afghanistan has skyrocketed?? There was a UN study out a month or 2 ago that said that in 2005 Afganistan produced 130% of worlds demand for illicit opium(for heroin manufacturing), that means they had a 30% percent surplus over the current world demand!!!!

Under Karzai's administartion Afghanistan has flooded the surrounding nations(and also Europe, and Australia) with drugs ranging from hashish to heroin.
I bet once Allied forces are out of Afghanistan, Karzai doesnt stand a chance staying in power.
