Arrrrghhhhhh…shucks!

Rain spoils first day of U-19s match

COLOMBO: Only one over was possible on the opening day of the first three-day match between the Under-19 teams of Sri Lanka and Pakistan here at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground on Friday, before rain spoiled any chance of play through the rest of the day. The Sri Lanka Under-19s opening pair had made three runs without being separated before the proceedings were called off.

Pakistan Under-19s captain Khalid Latif won the toss but asked the home team to go in first. On the first three balls sent in by Peshawar-born pace bowler Riaz Afridi, Upul Tharanga made three runs. On the next three, faced by the other opener Damindu Kularatne, no more runs could be scored.

The opening match of the Pakistan Under-19 team’s tour of Sri Lanka, to be played in Panadura on Tuesday and Wednesday, had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. This was supposed to be a two-day practice affair against a Sri Lanka Cricket Board Under-19s XI.

In the remainder of the tour, which is to last until September 2, the Pakistan Under-19s will play another three-day match at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala from August 20 to 22. Thereafter, the two national under-19 sides will be engaged in a series of five limited-over matches.

The dates for these games are August 24, first match at Moratuwa, August 27, second game at Matara, August 29, third match at Galle and August 31 and September 2, fourth and fifth encounters, both at the P Sara Stadium in Colombo.

About time they dont include Shahid Afridi in the U-19 squad's anymore. He took forever to turn 19 ;)

Aaqib Javed is the coach?
What the hell, I though the guy was like 30 and still played in the Pakistan Domestic tournaments.

Pakistan batsmen dominate third day of U-19s match

COLOMBO: The Pakistan Under-19s batsmen dominated the third day of their four-day match against Sri Lanka Under-19s here at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground on Sunday, as they went on to take a 90-run first innings lead over the hosts. By the close of play, the Sri Lankans had chopped 19 runs off that advantage with their opening pair still at the crease.

If the second day on Saturday belonged to Sri Lanka skipper Mohamed Maharoof, who hit a fighting 101 off 177 balls with 11 fours and two sixes in his team’s first innings score of 243 all out, the Pakistan batsmen continued to perform responsibly right through to the end on the third which saw them put 333 runs on the board.

Only one over could be bowled on the first day of the match on Friday, in which Sri Lanka Under-19s made three runs without loss, before rain ended any possibility of further play.

Later by mutual agreement the encounter, originally scheduled to be played over three days, was extended to make it a four-day affair.

Resuming their first innings at seven for no loss yesterday, the Pakistanis were in trouble in the 20th over with four wickets down for 43.

Fast-medium bowler Manoj Chanaka, who eventually finished with figures of 4-94, captured three of those wickets. But the fifth-wicket stand of 158 turned the tables on Sri Lanka.

**Pakistan captain Khalid Latif played a patient innings of 77 off 167 deliveries with eight fours while his partner Salman Qadir, one of the three sons of leg-spinning ace Abdul Qadir, was more adventurous while making 82 off just 127 balls with nine boundaries. After these two had gone, Mohamed Altaf (11) and wicket-keeper Naeem Ahamed added another valuable 49 runs for the seventh wicket.

Naeem made an exact 50 off 66 balls with three fours and a six. But the most enterprising knock of the day was the one by Amir Yousaf who hit 49 off a mere 41 deliveries with four fours and three sixes in a last-wicket stand of 63 that took the total to 333.**

Sri Lanka wicket-keeper Trevor de Silva did himself proud by snapping up six catches behind the stumps.

The opening match of the Pakistan Under-19 team’s tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played in Panadura on Tuesday and Wednesday, had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

This was a two-day practice affair against a Sri Lanka Cricket Board Under-19s XI.

In the remainder of the tour, which is to last until early next month, the Pakistan Under-19s will play a three-day match at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala from August 20 to 22.

Tour match ends in stalemate

LAHORE, Aug 18: The four-day match between Pakistan Under-19 and their Sri Lanka counterpart ended in a draw at Colombo, according to a message received on Monday.

Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 243 in the first innings due to a century hit by middle-order batsman M E Maharoof.

He hit 11 fours and two sixes. Medium-pacer Amir Yousaf picked up three for 49 while Mohammad Altaf and Hidayatullah Khan earned two wickets each for 45 and 43 runs. Pakistan responded strongly, scoring 333 in the first innings thanks to captain Khalid Latif (77, eight fours), Salman Qadir (82, nine fours), Naeem Ahmad (50, three fours, one six) and Aamir Yousaf (49, four fours, three sixes, 41 balls). The home side main attack bowler Chanaka claimed four wickets for 94.

  • **Summarised scores:

  • SRI LANKA U-19 (1st innings):** 243 for all in 85.1 overs (ME Mahroof 101, ADC Kulazathe 38, N Navela 38; Amir Yousaf 3-42, Mohammad Altaf 2-45, Hidayatullah Khan 2-43). And 243 for four in 92 overs (AD Kulazathe 64, N Navela 36, JK Silva 66, Ratnayake 26 not out; Riaz Afridi 2-49).

  • PAKISTAN UNDER-19 (1st innings): 333 for all in 88.5 overs (Salman Qadir 82, Khalid Latif 77, Naeem Ahmad 50, Amir Yousaf 49; Chanka 4-94, Abeydeera 2-47).

A positive outcome I’d say. Had the rain not spoiled the first day of the match, Pakistan could have won the match. Oh well…some good performances by Salman Qadir, skipper & wk Khalid Latif, Naeem and Aamir Yousaf with ball & bat.

Next three-dayer match kicks off tomorrow.

Teaser, I really thought Aaqib was still a young guy. But I guess a lot of those ages that they put on there official cards are made up so,,,,,,

Another three-dayer match gone Drawn… 5-ODI series starts on Aug 24th.

Altaf, Naeem help Pakistan Under-19s save match

KURUNEGALA, Sri Lanka: A determined seventh-wicket stand, that was eventually worth 60 runs, helped Pakistan Under-19s save their three-day match against Sri Lanka Under-19s here at the Welagedara Stadium on Friday and the game was called off early after there was no result in sight.

The visitors had by the end of their second innings gained an overall lead of 90 runs.

Resuming at 54 for one yesterday, still needing 80 runs to make the hosts bat again, the Pakistan Under-19s were all out for 224 runs. However, in the 57th over at 146-6 they were only 12 runs ahead of Sri Lanka and, with just four wickets in hand, appeared in some danger of a quick defeat.

Earlier in the day, the second-wicket partnership fetched 50 runs. Opener Jahangir Mirza made 35 runs off 85 balls with four boundaries while Afaq Rahim followed his first innings 35 with a useful 22. Mohammad Altaf hit 54 lower down the order, off 95 deliveries with six fours, and his seventh-wicket partner Naeem Ahmed chipped in with 29 off 60 balls with two fours and a six.

For Sri Lanka, slow left-armer Dunil Abeydeera and right-arm fast-medium bowler Nadeera Navela each took three wickets as Pakistan Under-19s were dismissed for 224 in their second innings. The home team faced 13 balls and the match came to an end as Riaz Afridi took a wicket on the first delivery he bowled.

The first three-day match between the two sides, later extended to make it a four-day affair due to a day lost to rain, ended in a draw at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo on Monday. The opening match of the Pakistan Under-19 team’s tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played in Panadura last week, had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

This was a two-day practice affair against a Sri Lanka Cricket Board Under-19s XI. In the remainder of the tour, which is to last until early next month, the two national under-19 sides will be engaged in a series of five limited-over matches.

Shahid hits unbeaten 136 as Pak U-19s win

MORATUWA: **Pakistan Under-19s drew first blood as they defeated Sri Lanka Under-19s in the first of their five limited-over matches, here at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium on Sunday, by two wickets in a thrilling finish while their vice-captain Shahid Yousuf played perhaps the innings of his young cricketing life on the way.

The Sialkot-born Shahid Yousuf, who came in at the fall of the second wicket with only one run on the board, proceeded to contribute a hard-hitting, unbeaten 136 off 144 balls with 12 fours and four sixes, as Pakistan reached 214 for eight and won the encounter with 11 balls to spare.**

Earlier, the Sri Lankans had lost their way after a bright start, and only managed to post a modest total of 213 runs in 49.4 overs after having been put into bat by the visitors’ skipper Khalid Latif. Their own captain Mohamed Maharoof bowled exceedingly well to take 4-35 off 8.1 overs but Shahid’s innings proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The hosts got off to a start of 42 runs off the first 35 balls but, by the 19th over, they had slumped to 90-5. Kosala Kulasekara, with 40 off 62 balls with five fours, and vice-captain Ganganath Ratnayake took the score to 151 with a 61-run sixth-wicket stand. Later, Sudan Dias (20 off 32 balls with a solitary boundary) helped Ratnayake add another useful 37 for the seventh wicket.

Ratnayake returned to the pavilion with 48 not out to his name. He had faced 78 balls and hit four fours. Pace bowler Adeel Malik and off-spinner Salman Qadir chipped in with two wickets each for Pakistan Under-19s.

The tourists were off to a horrid start, Maharoof getting rid of opener Jahangir Mirza and the in-form Afaq Rahim before they had a chance to open their account. Shahid Yousuf arrived with the score at one for two after two overs. He settled the situation with a 53-run third-wicket partnership with Khalid Latif in the next 11.3 overs.

**But in the 33rd over, Pakistan Under-19s were tottering at 119-6. But the Karachi-born Naeem Ahmed, the team’s wicket-keeper and one of their batting mainstays on the tour so far, joined Shahid for an invaluable 66-run stand for the seventh wicket. Naeem’s 22 came off 26 balls and included one six.

Riaz Afridi stuck around with Shahid for 1.4 overs without endangering his wicket and Pakistan Under-19s were home with a two-wicket win and a 1-0 advantage in the five-match rubber.**

After a washed-out two-day affair at the start of the tour, and a drawn four-day and three-day match later on, the Pakistan Under-19s will now meet Sri Lanka in the second one-day game at Matara in the south of the country on Wednesday. The dates for the remaining three matches are August 29, third match at Galle and August 31 and September 2, fourth and fifth encounters, both at the P Sara Stadium in Colombo.

Riaz Afridi, Adeel Malik demolish Sri Lanka U-19s

MATARA: **The Pakistan Under-19s annihilated their Sri Lanka counterparts, in the second match of the five-game limited-over series here at the Uyanwatte Stadium in the south of the country on Wednesday, as they raced to an emphatic eight-wicket victory after having routed the home team for a mere 85 runs and then reaching the target with just two wickets down and only 15.5 overs consumed.

The Pakistan pace duo of Riaz Afridi and Adeel Malik was so devastating that Sri Lanka Under-19s, having opted to bat first after winning the toss, had crashed to a measly 15 runs for eight wickets with even eight overs not having been completed. **

The first wicket fell with no score on the board, the next two with four made, the fourth at six, the next two with just seven runs scored and then it was eight runs for seven wickets.

This had happened with the innings only 6.2 overs old. The eighth wicket fell at 15 but the ninth-wicket pair gave the score a semblance of respectability. Wicket-keeper and left-handed batsman Gihan de Silva made more than half of Sri Lanka’s total of 85. His invaluable 44 came off 65 deliveries with five fours while his partnership with pace bowler Angelo Mathews yielded 56 runs in 14 overs.

Five of the earlier batsmen, including both the in-form skipper Mohamed Maharoof and vice-captain Ganganath Ratnayake, were sent back without managing to open their account. The Peshawar-born Riaz Afridi took five for 29 from 9.2 overs and clinched the Man of the Match award. Karachi’s Adeel Malik got 4-21 from his eight overs.

The Pakistanis were never under any pressure as they required 86 runs from 46 overs, as the match was reduced by four overs. The left-handed Nasir Jamshed from Lahore, a youngster who doesn’t turn 14 until December later this year and who was incidentally playing his first match of the Sri Lanka tour, hammered 48 not out from 45 balls with six fours and two sixes and Pakistan were home with as many as 30.1 overs to spare.

On Sunday, Pakistan had beaten Sri Lanka by two wickets at Moratuwa to draw first blood in the five-match series. They are now two-up with the Matara win. The dates for the remaining three matches are August 29 (Friday), third match at Galle and August 31 and September 2, fourth and fifth encounters, both at the P Sara Stadium in Colombo.

The Pakistan Under-19s had started their trip with a washed-out two-day affair, which was followed by a four-day match and then a three-day fixture, both of which had also ended as drawn.

Jahangir Mirza’s all-round show helps Pak Under-19s win

GALLE: **Jahangir Mirza pulled an all-round performance right out of the top drawer as Pakistan Under-19s defeated Sri Lanka Under-19s, here at the Galle International Stadium on Friday, by the emphatic margin of nine wickets and took an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series of limited-over internationals.

The 16-year-old Jahangir from Lahore first demolished the Sri Lankans’ lower order with figures of 4-24 with his off-spin bowling, and then hammered an unbeaten 73 as Pakistan overhauled the 189-run target with 15 overs to spare and just one wicket down. Skipper Khalid Latif was even more productive with 94 not out to his name.**

In the first two matches of the one-day series, played at Moratuwa last Sunday and at Matara on Wednesday, Pakistan had emerged victorious by margins of two wickets and eight wickets, respectively. The last two games will both be played at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium in capital Colombo, on August 31 (Sunday) and September 2.

Yesterday, the Pakistan Under-19s captain won the toss and put the hosts into bat. The start was a useful one as 54 runs were made for the first wicket in 13.5 overs. Opener Upul Tharanga hit a run-a-ball 39 that included as many as seven boundaries. The third-wicket stand, though a bit slow, fetched 55 runs as Harsha Vithana (23) and Kosala Kulasekara (28) batted responsibly.

From 133-3 in the 32nd over, however, the Sri Lanka Under-19s slumped to 188 all out in 48.3 overs. Jahangir Mirza took four of the last five wickets to fall, as the home team lost these lads for only 20 runs in a matter of 6.3 overs.

Medium-pacers Mohammad Altaf, from Islamabad, and Sialkot’s Shahid Yousuf, who is also the Pakistan team’s vice-captain, both took two wickets each. Shahid especially kept the runs in check and gave away only 30 runs in his 10 overs.

Pakistan Under-19s lost left-handed opener Nasir Jamshed at 16 in the 6th over. But Khalid Latif and Jahangir Mirza plundered 178 runs for the second-wicket partnership in 42.1 overs as the victory target was achieved. Khalid’s 94 consumed 157 balls but he hit five sixes and five fours. Jahangir made his 73 not out off 119 deliveries with five fours and a six.

Pakistan Under-19s register fourth straight win

COLOMBO: Pakistan Under-19s achieved their fourth win in a row to go 4-0 up in the five-match limited-over series, here at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium on Sunday, when they defeated the hosts by six wickets after their target was revised according to the Duckworth/Lewis Method for rain-interrupted games of cricket.

**The heroes for the visitors were their pace bowler Riaz Afridi, who bagged four wickets for 23 runs from 9.1 overs, and batsman Jahangir Mirza, who followed his match-winning 73 not out in the third match at Galle on Friday with another magnificent innings, which fetched him an unbeaten 89 yesterday. **The Sri Lankans were put in by the Pakistan skipper Khalid Latif after he had won the toss. The home team were dismissed for 183 in 49.1 overs while their opponents reached the revised target of 162 from 45 overs after rain, with 31 balls remaining and six wickets to spare.

Pakistan have already won the five-match series. The first game in Moratuwa last Sunday saw them winning by two wickets and then, at Matara, they beat Sri Lanka Under-19s by eight wickets. The result at Galle on August 29 was by nine wickets in favour of Pakistan. The last match is scheduled to be played here at the same venue, the P Saravanamuttu Stadium, on Tuesday, September 2.

The Sri Lankans lost their first four wickets with 61 runs on the board in the 20th over. Kaushal Silva, 42 off 76 balls with three fours, and skipper Mohamed Maharoof, his 37 coming off 58 balls with five boundaries, then added 64 for the fifth wicket off 91 balls. Thanks to the Peshawar-born Riaz Afridi, however, and a late burst by vice-captain and medium-pacer Shahid Yousuf who took 3-31, the last six Sri Lanka wickets managed just 58 runs in a little above 15 overs.

The Pakistan Under-19s lost some early wickets, and reached only 77 with the innings 23.1 overs old. Fast-medium bowler Manoj Chanaka took three of these wickets. **But the 16-year-old Jahangir Mirza found an able partner in former leg-spinning ace Abdul Qadir’s son Salman as the two plundered 88 runs for the unbroken fifth-wicket partnership in 16.4 overs to lead their team to victory.

Jahangir’s 89 not out came off 98 balls with 10 fours anmd two sixes. Salman Qadir made an unbeaten 42 off 55 balls with foir boundaries. Riaz Afridi and Jahangir Mirza shared the Man of the Match award.**

Sri Lanka Under-19s gain consolation win

COLOMBO: As is customary with most ‘dead’ rubbers, where one team gains a consolation win after having lost all previous matches, the Sri Lanka Under-19s defeated Pakistan Under-19s by seven wickets here at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium on Tuesday in the last match of the five-game limited-over cricket series. The Pakistanis, however, clinched the issue with a 4-1 advantage.

After being put into bat, the Pakistan Under-19s scored 183 all out in 37.4 overs. The match was reduced to 38 overs a side due to interruption by rain and Sri Lanka, set a revised target of 191 runs from their 38 overs, got home with only three wickets down and nine balls to spare.

The home team batted in a professional manner, left-handed opener Upul Tharanga making 55 off 73 balls with four fours and a six as Sri Lanka reached 96 for three. Kaushal Silva and skipper Mohamed Maharoof then hammered 95 runs for the unbroken fourth-wicket stand off 17.5 overs and took Sri Lanka to victory without being separated.

On their tour of Sri Lanka, the Pakistan Under-19s saw two of their matches, one played over four and the other over a three-day period, ending as drawn. The two-day opening fixture had to be abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. The visitors won all the first four limited-over matches before losing the last one yesterday.

Rain hit the proceedings in the fourth as well as fifth one-dayers, both played at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium here in Colombo, and the results were achieved through the Duckworth/Lewis Method for rain-interrupted matches.

On Tuesday, the Pakistan Under-19s were down to 68 for five in the 23rd over, mainly through the efforts of fast-medium bowler Dasun Kottehewa who was playing for the first time in the series. He eventually finished with figures of 3-48 from his eight overs. Nilakshan Soysa, another newcomer who bowls fast stuff, and the off-spinning vice-captain Ganganath Ratnayake also captured three wickets apiece.

The Pakistanis were lifted by a sixth-wicket stand of 49 between Salman Qadir, who hit 43 off 45 balls with two fours and a six, :k: and Mohammad Altaf, who scored a run-a-ball 22 with a solitary boundary. Later, pace bowler Riaz Afridi used the long handle to good effect, his 34 coming off just 18 balls with two fours and three sixes.

In the Sri Lanka innings, Kaushal Silva scored his unbeaten 63 off 80 deliveries with six boundaries while Maharoof’s 44 not out came off 48 balls with a six and a four. Riaz Afridi took his series haul to 11 wickets at 13.00 each with a best of 5-29 and was declared joint Man of the Series.

Sharing the award with him was Lahore’s 16-year-old Jahangir Mirza who, in five matches, totalled 184 runs at an average of 61.33. These included two unbeaten knocks of 73 and 89. In addition, Jahangir held four catches in the field and, with his off-breaks, took five wickets at 16.60 each with a best of 4-24.

…and that’s ends the official tour of Pakistan-U19s to Sri Lanka. The tour was ‘Successful’ overall. Three-dayer match series hardly took place as the series was washed out by rain. In the ODI series, Pakistan U-19s dominated totally, both in the batting and bowling department. Jahangir Mirza, Riaz Afridi, Shahid Yousuf and Salman Qadir are the names who can make their way into the Pakistan Sr. team sometime around 5-6 years from now. These players will be Pakistan’s future talent.

Good on Aaqib Javed. He has been good with his job, definitely, the U-19 bowlers have done their job on this tour. :k:

Jahangir Mirza(Batsman) and Riaz Afridi(Bowler) from Pakistan-U19s shared the Man of the Series Award.
