Pakistan Torches Seized Drugs Worth $395 Million
Pakistani authorities put more than three tons of heroin and hashish to the torch on Wednesday and vowed to step up the battle against drugs flowing in from neighboring Afghanistan. The drugs, seized over the last year in the southwestern Baluchistan province on the Afghan border, were burned at a ceremony attended by Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz.
“The heroin is three tonnes and its value is $300 million on the international market,” senior customs official, Waheedullah Marwat, told reporters in the city of Quetta. Also put to the torch were 19 tons of hashish, valued at $95 million, he said. Most illegal drugs seized in Pakistan come from Afghanistan where opium production last year reached 3,600 tons, more than three-quarters of global supply, according to U.N. estimates. Heroin is refined from opium. Some security experts say Afghanistan’s ousted Taliban militia and even their al Qaeda group allies are making money from the drug trade. Aziz said Pakistan’s efforts against drugs would be stepped up and X-ray machines and other equipment would be installed at border crossings to try and stem the flow. “We have decided to carry out a very tough campaign on the drug routes,” he said.
