Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

By Stephanie Nebehay

GENEVA (Reuters) - Pakistan will pursue the widower of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto for 60 million Swiss francs ($54 million) it says the couple hid illegally in Switzerland, its lawyer said on Tuesday.

A hearing is expected to be held in Geneva in late January in the long-running money-laundering case, begun in 1997 against Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari, according to Jacques Python, Pakistan’s lawyer in the Swiss city.

Zardari, now de facto leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, is carrying the Bhutto dynasty’s torch after the former prime minister was killed in a gun and bomb attack on December 27 as she left an election rally. Elections have been put off to February 18.

**“We remain a civil party in the (criminal) procedure against Mr. Zardari,” Python told Reuters. “To our knowledge, 60 million Swiss francs remain frozen in connection with the case.”

The amount is four times the $13 million previously referred to as being blocked in connection with alleged kickbacks from Swiss cargo inspection companies. Geneva judicial officials were not available to comment.

“She (Bhutto) appears little in the bank documents. On the other hand, Zardari’s name appears as the beneficial owner of most of the accounts that are frozen,” Python said.**

“The time has come to look at the technical issues so that the frozen funds can be returned to Pakistan.”

The couple always denied the charges and Bhutto came to Geneva several times to testify that the case was politically motivated. They were convicted in 2003 of laundering funds worth $13 million and ordered to return that sum to Pakistan.

**But the verdict was thrown out on appeal, sparking a fresh probe by a Geneva judge, whose confidential findings last year were contested by lawyers for both Bhutto and Zardari.

The forthcoming hearing in Geneva will decide whether the case returns to the judge for more work or goes to chief prosecutor Daniel Zappelli who can drop it or order a trial.

Swiss charges against Bhutto ended with her death.

“She always affirmed that the accounts were not hers and she did not have any access to them,” her former Swiss lawyer Alec Reymond said on Tuesday.

DENIES CHARGES

Saverio Lembo, Zardari’s lawyer in Geneva, reaffirmed on Tuesday that his client denied the money-laundering charges.

“We requested that the case be sent back to the judge for more investigation, including calling other witnesses,” Lembo told Reuters. “My client has never been heard in this case.”

Asked whether Zardari might come to Geneva to try to clear his name, he said that his client’s health was “very fragile” after 8 years in jail in Pakistan and heart surgery.

President Pervez Musharraf signed an amnesty last October to prepare the way for a power-sharing accord with Bhutto by erasing graft charges against her and Zardari in Pakistan. Pakistan’s Supreme Court has yet to rule on the amnesty.

“Corruption cases against Mrs Bhutto and my client have been dropped. No crime has been established in Pakistan,” Lembo said. “That makes it difficult to pursue (a case) in Switzerland.”

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

read the word "press" in urdu

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

Fragile? Zardari? This is just laughable.

He hasn't looked fragile at all in recent days, especially after BB was murdered. He looks and talks like a healthy man rather a "states' man".

I think money was laundered, and it is in Swiss banks. Zardari owes it to Pak nation that he returns this and every other looted penny.

If he shows moral strength at this moment, Pak nation will forgive him for having looted the exchequer.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

^ Musharraf wrote off Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and Shujaats loans, maybe they will do the same for him too...

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

^Forget about the loans. Elahis are buying off half of Dubai and his son is best at It. Where does the money come from? I remember ppl going crazy blaming and claiming BB for buyin properties and possessing sky scrapers in Dubai. Where are these ppl now?!

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

yep, loans were during the NS govt, and now since 2002 they were the main looters of the country. They bought alot of business and property in Dubai so taht they can spend their life after ousting in peace. I hope mushy's tukish house is also ready by now.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

ok so verdict from “main na manoon group” is that we should not discuss any corruption of Zardari coz PE and Chaudhris are also involved in corruption

what a logical reason  and :again clap:

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

^ Yeah, makes sense, whats with this 'selective' justice? How would you feel if you and I both rob a bank and get caught, however u get prosecuted, and I walk away with the loot?

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

People are free to bring corruption evidence, investigations and all against any politician

it just seems like international media has not picked up nawaz or ch biradraan related news as much as BBs, with the house being forced for sale in UK, swiss conviction, spanish laundering charges, oil for food scandal, US congress report, interpol warrants etc.

I am in no way saying that other Pakistanis are clean, but just saying, why dont we share the info here about others corruption, especially if it is from global media sources and is substantiated.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

^ Because these Chaudhries didnt get these loans from international markets nor did they open Swiss accounts to keep them. State bank did write off their massive loans, and Shaukat Aziz was behind all that. Now the international media doesnt care about them, but someone who thinks a crook like zardari should be investigated, do so by all means, but dont forget the Chaudhry brothers, and you will also find out that Zardari was in power for 5 years combined. Chaudhries have been in power for 6 years under NS (when they got those loans) and 5 years under Musharraf. Only now have the Chaudhries started sending their money abroad (they know the time is near), and this one Pakistani news agency did a story on them, and they were threatened by the chaudhry brothers the very next day.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

so foriegn banks are not too concerned about this corruption money?

now dont take this as a support of chaudhry biradran in any means.
its just that even by what you said it looks like they were local badmaash.

I mean even Nawaz did not get written up as much in international media on the varied set of corruption charges that BB and mr BB did.

not to say they are not corrupt, but either they are very good at hiding it, or they have not done as much.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

well u are welcome to discuss the corruption of Ch ...go ahead and open the thread but giving lame excuse in the thread about Zardari's corruption (oh ch brothers ALSO did the corruption) is as lame as it can get.

As I said before when a cop stops you for over speeding try saying to him that "oh the other car was also doing over speeding" do tell us what he said in reply ....

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

Most of what they came out against BB was after she was deposed. Now we already know about the loans written off by shuakat aziz, we'll find out where the money to buy half of dubai came from after musharraf is deposed. Then we'll also get a chance to find out how much musharraf plundered.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

Once again your lack of intelligence lost you the argument. Do you think Im the cop here? I am just pointing out how the selective pro-mushts always talk about Zardari.. Just point out one thread about the corruption, lootmar from the chaudhry brothers from either urself or any pro-mushy apologist, and I will eat my words.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

p.s. just for fun, i have seen a friend get out a ticket by using the example you just posted...

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

cool, I agree.

so we will wait to compare the corruption of benazir/zardari with that of others. but until we have that we have to live with what we have and that is a huge list of corruption by BB and 10%, and press for justice on all of that.

surprisingly though, using the example you gave, Nawaz has been out for years and the list of corruption scandals against him is not quite as long or as varied. what gives?

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

let me speak nice and slow so that you can get my point:

you.........can.............not............run...........away.............from................
discussing...............the...........corruption............of.............zardari..........
.....by.................giving.................lame....excuse............that...........
.....chaudhris............are.............also................doing.............this......

got it or want me to spell it ? but wait you are one of "main na manoon group" right? no matter what I do, you are trying not to understand

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

You arent very good at spellings, (remember consensus lol) so spare it. You are just another mushy apologist/supporter, and whenever you talk about accountability, democracy, you will be stung from all corners.

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

as if you are far ahead with "illegitimate" and "constitution" :)

Re: Pakistan to press Swiss case against Zardari

sorry i got sidetracked by the 'not so smart' poster here and didnt read this.... why should we wait, chaudhry shujaat got those loans in NS's tenure, just because he jumped ships and is with musharraf doesnt grand him immunity. Also, zardari was kept in jail for so long, 10+ years so why didnt they do anything? as for your concern about NS, maybe hes a better thief, honestly I want EVERYONE to be held accountable, as they are all crooks. The only diff is, two of them are ex-crooks that are no longer in power, chaudhry brothers are still crooks who are in power/in bed with musharraf.
