Pakistan to enact first law for Sikh marriages

ISLAMABAD: For the first time, special marriage legislation for the Sikh community will be introduced soon in Pakistan, caretaker Minister for Law and Justice Afzal Haider said on Monday. While taking to reporters, he said that the legislation would meet a long-standing demand of the community as no legislation governing marriages of followers of the Sikh religion existed in the country. “In fact the contemplated law would be the first such legislation anywhere in the world, including India, where Sikh community marriages were solemnised under Hindu Marriages Act,” the minister said. Haider said that the proposed Sikh Marriages Ordinance, 2007 would be promulgated soon. Under the ordinance, members of the Sikh community from any part of the world could come to Pakistan to solemnise marriage and avail the facility of registration, he added.

Six places would be specified under the ordinance for solemnising marriages of members of the Sikh community. These places are Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta and Nankana Sahib. Haider said that the number of places for solemnising marriages could be increased in consultation with the Sikh representatives in Pakistan. He said that delegations of Sikh community had met him and expressed their gratitude for the government’s initiative to enact the special law. “I have also received a string of phone calls from Sikhs in India, Canada and other places who expressed their happiness.

Re: Pakistan to enact first law for Sikh marriages.

Well, we have given Sikhs a right they don’t even enjoy in India. :k:

Re: Pakistan to enact first law for Sikh marriages.

I don't get it. Sikhs aren't allowed to get married in India? Sikhs get married all the time? Or are they not allowed to perform their rituals? Or read their prayers?

Re: Pakistan to enact first law for Sikh marriages.

Its not like that. They marry under the Hindu marriage act. Muslims and Christians have their own marriage acts and all other religions are clubbed under the Hindu marriage act.

Ahmadis boycott polls over ‘discrimination’
** Announce protest against separate voter lists

By Ali Waqar *

LAHORE: **The Ahmadi community of Pakistan has announced that it will boycott the upcoming general elections because of what it claims to be religious discrimination by the Election Commission (EC) when it issued a separate list for Ahmadi voters in a joint electorate system, Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya (JA) officials told Daily Times on Saturday. **

They said that no community member would contest the elections or vote come election day, and those who did would no longer be considered part of the community.

Salimuddin, a spokesman for the JA, told Daily Times that following the display of the separate voter lists, he wrote a letter to the chief election commissioner (CEC), drawing his attention to the “stark violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed in the constitution and Pakistan’s international human rights commitments”.

“This is also contrary to the spirit of justice and equality. Since the inception of Pakistan in 1947 to the time of General Ziaul Haq, all national elections were conducted on the basis of the joint electorate system. This was in line with the vision of the founding father of the nation and was enshrined in the 1973 Constitution,” he said.

Unfortunately, he said, during the government of Ziaul Haq, the joint electorate system was replaced by separate electorates, which gave rise to sectarianism and religious intolerance.

The letter reminded the CEC that President Pervez Musharraf’s government took the decision to restore the joint electorate system, which was a step in the right direction. However, he said, the practical outcome of the change was not as real as it might appear. “There still happens to be a section of society that is discriminated against on the basis of religion … Ahmadis’ votes are registered only if they dissociate themselves from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), something which is not possible for any Ahmadi to do in light of our religious belief and practical life,” he said in the letter. EC Secretary Kunwar Dilshad had no clear answer to the complaint.

Re: Pakistan to enact first law for Sikh marriages.

Then what Pakistan has done for the Sikhs is quite extraordinary. I am sure Sikhs from all over the world will now flock to Pakistan, especially to take advantage of this law.

Musharafs pathetic attempts at appearing to support the rights of minorities is a laughable.. Mush supporters are pathetic… :hehe:
