Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

An interesting development in Indo-Pak trade relationships. A decision has been made (in principle), but no date yet for its implementation.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar Wednesday said that Pakistan had made a principled decision to grant Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India, Geo News reported.

To a question posed to the Foreign Minister in a point of order during National Assembly session, she said: “A principled decision has been taken to declare India as Most Favoured Nation,” adding, however, that Pakistan wanted Kashmiris to be taken on board in the consultative process.

Hina Rabbani Khar said positive signals were being received in connections with the outstanding disputes with India.

“We want progress on not just one but a number of issues with India on permanent basis besides normalization of overall bilateral relations,” she added.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

atleast something good has been happening on indo-pak front.
hope it continues

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

mere words. we'll have to see whether correct actions follow.

If they mean it, it is a very positive and under the circumstances, a very courageous move by the Pak government.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

Why? What favour has India did?

Blocked our water from the rivers or Blamed us for Mumbai Attacks Or What?

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

comeon. didnt pakistan attack mumbai. who should we have blamed... martians?

it is a reciprocal action by pakistan as it already enjoys mfn from india, india last week gave it support to pakistan for its exports to europe and india and pakistan decided to increase the trade to 6bn usd from current 2bn.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

I dont know about the trade lets not discuss it .....and regarding mumbai attacks everyone knows Pakistan was not involved

Show me a link/news for that.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

Amin Fahim must have made a lot of money from it. Now get ready for our markets to be dumped with Indian goods.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

its like a joke! who is enemy of Pakistan? can now be most favoured nation! it can only be very shallow relationship unless the deep rooted problems are solved, Kashmir for a starter?

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

I think it is a good decision. Billions of Rs of Indian and Pakistani goods are smuggled without paying government taxes. Threre should be no objection to legalize this business. However it requires Kyani’s approval. Without his approval, the deal can not get through.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

What about the claim that India had all sorts of trade barriers on Pak products? Is India changing its policy there?

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

On a thread about economic relations and trade, we should not discuss trade. Right, got it.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

Okay, and what will Pakistan get out of it ? Apparently now Pakistan, India and Afghanistan are officially friends .

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

Pakistan doesn't get much benefit from getting MFN status from India bcoz we don't export much to India any way.,

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

MFN is a reciprocal agreement. India had given MFN status to Pakistan in the Nineties.

THe agreement allows two nations to treat each other at par with its other favoured trading partners.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

Pakistan has more to gain from MFN agreement provided if they want to..India is a bigger market, so there is opportunity for Paksitanis to sell their stuff in a bigger market India...on the other hand Pakistan is a smaller market as compared to India.

Re: Pakistan to declare India as Most Favoured Nation

What will be the gains for Pakistan from this?
