Pakistan - Time for a more Professional approach

Its time the PCB grew up, we’ve lived off the back of individual heroics for too long. Our traditional approach has been to rely on a ‘match-winning’ performance from one of our players.

Maybe Afridi will get a century today, maybe Saeed will take us to a huge total, maybe Inzi will hold the innings together, maybe Wasim/Waqar will blast the opposition out, maybe Saqi will rip out the middle order.

For too long we’ve been relying on the ‘potential’ brilliance of individuals and not on a team-based effort.

Its time to get professional… B-]

Fielding - we need to have fielding practice, even if its only one training day out of 5 but at least 10-15% of the training time should be dedicated to fielding. Players should practice…

Diving - players should be taught how to dive properly, safely and effectively. When they are practising diving then they should also be trying to stop or catch a ball too.

Catching - they should be taught to watch the ball into their hands, they should be taught about correct hand positioning and to use both hands where possible.

…the best catchers/fielders of the match should get some sort of reward (by the Pak team) and those that drop crucial catches should be made to apologize to the others…

Bowling - there should be a dedicated bowling coach who works exclusively with the bowlers. He needn’t be a big-name former player because that may cause friction with the current coach or captain. We definitely need a bowling coach and to sort out other areas…

no balls and wides - it wouldnt cost the earth to hire a few people who can just call every no ball and wide in the nets. Each time a player oversteps in the nets it should not only be called but it should also be recorded. Whenever a player oversteps a certain amount of times in a session they should be given a warning and if the player doesnt seem interested in rectifying the problem then he should be dropped for a while!

Codes between Wickie and Bowler - the bowlers should have certain codes with which they can alert the keeper when they are going to make a delivery that will do something unusual so he can be ready for it and stop it going for four byes!

Variations - each bowler should have a folder/portfolio. That portfolio should list the bowlers strengths, weaknesses and variations. Each type of bowler (spinner/seamer) should be required to have certain generic deliveries (yorkers/googlies/etc) in his armoury, those bowlers who lack certain variations should be required to learn and perfect the deliveries they dont have. Each player should be seen as a work-in progress and no player should be referred to or considered a complete bowler.

Control of variations - Each player should be expected to be able to bowl a certain type of delivery as and when asked for. At least once a day/week the head coach should accompany the bowling coach and they should test each bowlers variation. The head coach should call out the name of the delivery and the bowler should be able to bowl it right there and then. The bowler with the greatest level of accuracy should be given a reward of some kind, those bowlers struggling to bowl certain deliveries should be assisted by the bowling coach in perfecting some control over the bowlers variation!

Defending their own bowling - each bowler should be expected to chase down the ball when it stays on the pitch (not turn his back and walk away like Shoaib does), each bowler should be expected to go back to the stumps at the non-strikers end in case of a chance of a run out (the way Sami does). They should practice blocking deliveries that are hit back past them and expected to try and catch balls coming back thru them!

…in short the bowlers should have a dedicated coach (perhaps two coaches one for spinners and one for seamers) who watches and guides their progress as players!

Batting - there should be a batting coach too. The batting coach should work with the batsmen and answer to the head coach. The head coaches job should be to work out strategies against opposition batsmen and bowlers. The head coaches job shouldnt be the day-to-day coaching of players. The head coach should pick up each players wekanesses and pass those onto the batting/bowling coach who can work them out with the players!

Running between wickets - they need to practice this aspect a lot more and they need a series of codes/signals with which to tell each other how many they intend to run.

Type of Shots available - Each batsman should also have a folder, listing his strengths and weaknesses. The coach should help him cope with the type of deliveries that he struggles with. Also each batsman’s folder should have a list of the strokes and shots he has in his repertoire. The coach should help the batsman develop new shots to increase each batsmans scoring potential all around the ground and not just in certain favourite areas!

Footwork - Players footwork should be looked at and worked upon by the caoch, etc.

Well thats what i think needs to be done to make Pakistani players more professional. The whole setup needs to be re-vamped and we need a coaching team not just a ‘coach’

We need a bowling, batting and fielding coach. Each of these coaches would get their instructions from and answer to the head coach.

Well we need to do something if we are going to compete with the professionalism of other teams, Pakistan must be the last amateur team to still be playing international cricket!

We need to ‘develop’ our players to their full potentials!

If we are among the top 4 teams as amateurs then imagine what we would be like as a more professional unit?

Why don't you apply yourself. You seem to have it all figured out. :)

ps. In fielding, one thing you missed (don't know how), is throwing. Fielders should practice by throwing at just one stump. Running out an opposition batsman is treated as a bonus by our team. They should be treated as a regular opportunity. Direct hits are so frequent with teams like Australia. Batsmen also don't take cheeky singles if they know the fielder will hit straight. That also brings down the run rate.

For some field positions, there should be specialist fielders. Point, square leg and covers are good examples. All we have are experts in "slips".

Yes you are right but these things have to be drilled into the players from a very early stage rather than at a time when they break into international cricket. Hopefully, the new cricket academies and better organisation of cricket in Pakistan will begin to address these issues at grass root level.

Mercenary - isn't all that what coaches are trainers are supposed to do? Also how come you didn't say anything about player selection & compensation?
