Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Yet another feather in the cap of the dictator. Wonder when he will round up all the commonwealth heads of state and throw them in prison. After all how anyone on this earth dare to contradict or disagree with Mr. Perfect.

OK now lets hear from Mush supporters how a third class and out dated organisation commonwealth is.

**Pakistan barred from Commonwealth **](BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistan barred from Commonwealth)

Pakistan has been suspended from the Commonwealth because of its imposition of emergency rule, the organisation has announced after a meeting in Uganda.

Secretary General Don McKinnon said Pakistan was being suspended “pending restoration of democracy and the rule of law”.
Earlier Pakistan’s Supreme Court dismissed a legal challenge to Pervez Musharraf’s re-election as president.
The president has said he will now step down as head of the army.
Mr McKinnon said the 53-member Commonwealth had reached the decision by consensus.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the “decision was taken in sorrow, not in anger”, and that he hoped the group would be able to welcome Pakistan back soon.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

hayee Allah aab kia ho ga? Pakistan has been kicked out of the gang of countries formally ruled but UK? Hum loog tu bhokey mar jaeen gaay.....hamara khana peena common wealth sai hee tu aata tha :(

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

would it matter?

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Musharaf doesnt care...

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Well can someone present a synopsis of what damage it will do to Pakistan and what alternatives do we have for what we are loosing out from the Commonwealth.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Its good that the commonwealth is making a strong statement that is loud and clear.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

yes it would matter. it will affect students and workers coming to UK. there are few common wealth scholarships which Pakistani students would not be able to qualify for, and workers would be pushed a step down. At the moment for the work force priority is given to British Nationals, then comes an EU national and then comes commonwealth member state. The rest of the world is LAST in the priority, unfortunately NOW Pakistan will be categorized as rest of the world. :chai:

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

True but all this doesn’t matter a bit to musharraf, who only cares about his own chair and his power. Pakistan and the Pakistanis don’t matter to him.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

he cares.. but only about his own ass. the country and the people may as well go to hell.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Oh no. :teary3:

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

I don't think it will have much impact, but CW did right thing by saying in this day & age dictatorships are not acceptable.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

The mere fact that people are getting affected does not matter. What matters is that the kursi of the drill master is safe. If he can let the terrorist roam free in order to save his kursi, what is commonwealth.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

I am wondering what the purpose of an organization such as common wealth is. is it like a free trade agreement?

also the other thing - some states in the USA (Massachusetts ?) call themselves commonwealth too.

just what is this commonwealth?

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

^ I think Commonwealth is group of countries which in past were ruled by Britishers.

Commonwealth has "thrown" out Pakistan for being ruled by dictator while UK (the parent of Commonwealth) continues to support the very same dictator.... call it some standard.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

Big deal, All CW countries are a paradise one less won't make no difference.

Re: Pakistan thrown out of Commonwealth

also you loose the loan on cheaper rates and some inter commonwealth members trade privileges.
but most important… it brings a bad name…

C’wealth decision denounced**

** By Qudssia Akhlaque**
ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: Pakistan on Friday denounced as “unreasonable and unjustified” the Commonwealth’s decision to suspend its membership and warned that it would review its association with the 53-nation organisation.

“The Government of Pakistan deeply regrets the decision of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to suspend Pakistan from the Councils of the Commonwealth. The decision does not take into account the objective conditions prevailing in Pakistan,” the Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Sadiq said in a stringent statement.

The Commonwealth suspended Pakistan’s membership on Thursday and called for the restoration of “democracy and the rule of law”.

The FO spokesperson said: “The pace of progress towards normalcy will be determined by ground realities and legal requirements in Pakistan rather than unrealistic demands from outside.”He recalled that in order to prevent any precipitate decision by CMAG, both the prime minister and the foreign minister had contacted the leaders of CMAG on telephone and through letters communicating the ground realities in Pakistan and underlining the significant political progress made since the imposition of emergency.

“The CMAG countries were asked to take this progress into account in their deliberations and to postpone any consideration of suspension until a CMAG delegation could visit Pakistan to see for itself the existing circumstances and the steps taken by the government to place Pakistan firmly on the path of democracy,” he noted.

In a hint that Pakistan was considering the option of walking out of the club of former British colonies as it did in 1972, he stated: “Pakistan will review its association and further cooperation with the organisation.”

When asked what in concrete terms would Pakistan lose if suspended from the Commonwealth, he said: “It is very difficult to put a concrete figure what we lose but if you look at the range of cooperation it is basically a diplomatic forum where we are able to interact with other member countries. That is the biggest advantage of the organisation and then there are some scholarships in the educational field.”

The Sri Lankan foreign minister strongly opposed Pakistan’s suspension from the Commonwealth as did his Malaysian counterpart but Malta’s foreign minister, who chairs the Group, pushed hard for it.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has praised the Sri Lankan move to disassociate itself from CMAG’s decision to suspend Pakistan from the Commonwealth.

Sri Lanka took this decision on Friday in a cabinet meeting chaired by its prime minister.

‘Suspension from Commonwealth isolating Pakistan’](http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\11\25\story_25-11-2007_pg11_2)

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto said on Saturday the suspension of Pakistan’s membership by the Commonwealth had demonstrated once again that President General Pervez Musharraf’s regime policies had led to increasing isolation of Pakistan in the international community and had harmed the vital interests of the country and its people.

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meeting in Kampala on Thursday suspended Pakistan from the 53-nation bloc pending the return of the rule of law following the imposition of emergency rule earlier this month.

“The suspension of Pakistan from the Commonwealth shows that the concerns of the democratic forces in the country are shared by the international community as well,” Bhutto said in a statement issued by the PPP media centre.

The former prime minister called upon the regime to immediately reverse its policies aimed at strengthening dictatorship so as to end Pakistan’s isolation.

She said it was shocking that small coteries had resorted to policies to perpetuate themselves in power even at the risk of endangering the welfare and well being of 160 million people of the country by making Pakistan a pariah state in the comity of nations.

She said those who claimed ‘Pakistan First’ had been exposed as their policies were driven by ‘Self First’ and not ‘Pakistan First’.
