i think pakistan besides participating in cricket and hockey and squash the games in which pakistan is good. pakistan should also participate in snooker alot even though in snooker it does but very less. it should participate heavily on spots like swimming, football tennis, badminton etc and for that we need sports arena in our own country. we are not developing very well as a sports nation. we are only good in few sports. i think pakistan has the potential to become good at many sports and we can win gold medal. in olympics we only have chance of winning gold medal from hockey but we can get more by developing into other sports as well. what do you think people do post your comments
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
take it so some other place dude, this is cricket nama, and it shouldn't be surprsing to you but here you will only hear about cricket.
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
Let me tell you something. Pakistani based Snooker players can’t even build a sizeable break, they would be litterly hammered against people like Ronnie O’sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams, John Higgins etc. Our lads back home have a standard which is good enough for asian games etc not against these boys I mentioned.
On the contrary, I completely agree with you, we do need to participate in other sports. Whenever the olympics arrive, I’m so disappointed with our representation honestly. Our only medal hopes lie with our Hockey team realistically speaking. I would like Pak to produce a strong track and field team which can :insha:] challenge for honours in the years to come.
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
if theres a sport right now thats ripe for the taking, its boxing.
the heavyweight scene esp is ****e and theres no real prospects anywhere in the world! if there are any, theyre daym sure not getting any coverage!
the pugilists we have atm are crap apart from klitschko.
Pakistan needs to bring forward some of its boxing talents and promote them on the world stage. a few years ago that lad won gold in the commonwealth games, but since then hes done a houdini!![]()
there was Amir Khan, pakistani origin fighting for britain, its his choice and fair play to him. but surely theres some talented paki lads in usa/uk/elsewhere in the world where the gyms are of a standard, that can bring these lads to the forefront.
athletics: i was watching the helsinki games recently and saw the paki 400m runner finish 7/8!
squash: i cant name 1 decent paki squash player on the world scene atm! dont know whats gone wrong after 50 years of domination, weve gone flat.![]()
paki hockey has also been crap of late. apart from a few high profile wins aginst the big teams, were crap.
looks like pakistans hopes will eternally remain in cricket. not that thats totally a bad thing. pakistan are to cricket what brazil are to football…both countries have a ‘production line’ like system for producing decent players.
and where there is realistic talent, theres realistic trophies to be won.![]()
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
Well besides boxing I can't really think of anything. There is soccer or football should I say, but it will take time. Basketball could be good too, if helped at the grass root level. You don't need to be able to dunk to win games. I mean just look at the european teams!
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
until pakistan gets a great domestic structure for whichever sport.. forget about coming up to the world level
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
EXACTLY GenSec!
look at indian football federation for example. they have some of the oldest teams in the world outside europe!
the Durand Cup is the 3rd oldest football tournament in the world after the FA Cups of england and scotland!
their league system started some time ago!
Pakistan probably still has a VERY amateur system, whereby teams only play against other local teams in awful conditions and little training! this was the case when i was las in the old country earlier this year!
its high time the govt done something. maybe start 1st and 2nd division leagues for each province. then the 4 winners of each province play in some sort of cup ie; 'national league cup'. and have seperate 'PFA cup'.
get this ball rolling, then who knows, in a few years, Pakistan could have a representative in the Asian champions league!
Football, Basketball, baseball, pro wrestling/martial arts, Rugby, Tennis, Badmington should be good investments for national and international events. if the facilities are there. people WILL use them!
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
At the risk of sounding racist (in a good way), i think pakistani sports promorters should concentrate on making sportsmen out of Pathans and Makranis.
Pathans as everybody knows are already international on the world scene which is a good thing, but i do feel there are still many untapped reservoirs out there.
The one group of people that we never bother with are Makranis. There is a huge population of them in karachi. They are basically Pakistan's population of black people. And they can do basically everything that north american black people can do. Be it dance, sing or athletics. They are excellent soccer players and its really surprising to not see them on some professional level by now.
And that was my two cents.
Sincerely,
Captain Lota
Re: pakistan should participate in other sports besides cricket
You can't just say "hey look, that sport looks easy, lets participate in that sport". The country needs to have legitimate talent, exposure, training etc and that sort of things to be succesful in any sport. Its the governemnt's job to impose these sports in schools across the country and create succesful ATHLETES.
