Pakistan set to switch one-day event to Kenya

Australia and New Zealand have agreed in principle to play Pakistan in a triangular one-day series to be staged in Kenya next month, a senior Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said.

The Pakistan board announced last week it was considering shifting the series to Nairobi after Australia and New Zealand raised security concerns.

“We have also spoken to Kenyan cricket association officials in London and they appear enthusiastic about hosting the one-day series,” board director Brigadier Munawar Rana said.

"However, a formal agreement with the Australian and New Zealand boards – and also with the Kenyan cricket association – is still to be signed.

“Basically, the series would be treated as our home series. But we will have to bear all essential expenses for hosting the series.”

Pakistan has been forced to look for alternative neutral venues because of teams’ reluctance to visit the country in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

Earlier this year, a two-Test Pakistan-West Indies series was switched to Sharjah while New Zealand cut short their tour in May after a bomb went off outside their hotel in Karachi.

The PCB says it has since suffered a revenue shortfall of some $20 million.

Kenya hosted the ICC ‘mini World Cup’ knockout tournament two years ago.

Pakistan have announced a tentative schedule of August 25 to September 7 for the triangular series. Australia are also due to travel to Pakistan in October for a test series although several of their players, including Shane Warne, have said they do not want to go.

Rana added: "Ideally we would have liked to play the tri-nation series in Pakistan, because it was supposed to be the showpiece event of our Test cricket Golden Jubilee year.

“It is obvious that our profits or revenues would definitely be reduced by having to play a home series at a neutral venue.”

Pakistan celebrates the 50th anniversary of its team attaining test status this winter.

I know a lot of people are saying that we should take a stand and not play the teams who are not prepared to come to Pakistan. The question is that if we do refuse and with the world cup only nine months away, the sure loser will be us. It is better for us, in the current cirucmstances, to play at other veneus and gain all the experience before the world cup, then to refuse to play and have no competitive cricket at all.

What do you say?

I don't think anyone has a problem for Pakistan playing NZ and Aus, the problem is the venue being 3rd class hosting 3 exciting teams, nobody will come watch any of the matches.
Why was Sharjah ignored first of all, I know its kind of hot in September but all 3 teams are used to that climate and they have played here before many times, so there isn't a problem, another great series is going down the drain by hosting in some 3rd class venue.

Kenya is not a third Class Venue, It has succesfully hosted couple of tournaments as well. Playing in heat is very diffuclt and no one gets used to it. I am glad that Kenya is considered ahead of Sharjah.

Anyways, if the ICC can hold a Knockout tournament at Kenya, then it’s fine.

If Pakistan, West Indies and India are able to play in Toronto, which too has a very poor facility, then Kenya is fine.

Besides, it’s about time other countries get some reconsilation. Anything to expand the game is a aok with me

Besides the Morocco pick was really good idea! Next time, Morocco will have their own team, and able to compete in a quadrangle.

How do you think the English and Australians felt about expanding the game in South Asia? They pretty much laughed.. and now look at us

Well your'e right, everyone thought same about Sharjah 25 years ago when Abdul Rahman Bukhatir tried to expand the game into the middle east, well they couldn't get the team but the venue is the best in the world, crowd wise.
