QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani border guards seized about one ton of drugs from smugglers bringing in contraband from Afghanistan (news - web sites), an official said on Sunday.
Colonel Ghulam Sarwar Awan of the paramilitary Frontier Corps told Reuters his forces ambushed smugglers trying to lead a caravan of donkeys through the Murda Karez mountains near the border town of Chaman.
The smugglers escaped after a brief gunbattle, he said.
“We have seized 497 kg loaded on the back of donkeys,” he said. In another operation on the same night, the Corps seized 1,100 pounds of morphine from a house in a former Afghan refugee camp in Chaghi district, 150 miles west of the main southwestern city of Quetta.
Pakistani narcotics officials say the country is the transit route for about a quarter of the heroin smuggled from Afghanistan, the world’s largest producer of opium last year. It made some 3,400 tons of the drug from which morphine and its derivative heroin are made, the United Nations (news - web sites) says.
