u know what the average speed wud have been? almost 100 miles an hour NON STOP.....even now, as u say, 8-9 hours wud be considered super.
india's fastest train, Shatabdi Express, travelling at 160 kms an hour [Delhi to Bhopal] covers 710 kms in 7 hours coz that train makes one stop at Agra and has to slow down due to various reasons, including track repairs, track not available, congestion on the network.
