Pakistan Railway made Rs. 100 million through E-Ticketing**

By Maheen Kanwalon December 9, 2016 -

Pakistan Railway (PR) Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique announced that national railway department has earned Rs. 100 million in a period of two months by selling etickets.

About 8500 tickets were sold through mobile accounts, credit cards and UBL Omni, according to PR sources. Most of the tickets were booked by the people from remote areas. Minister congratulated railway department and also advised the IT department to make the service available in Quetta within a month as a lot of people travel through Akbar Bugti Express, Bolan Mail and Jaffar Express.

Minister Saad Rafique inauguratedthe E-ticketing system in October, 2016 where Pakistan Railway and UBL signed MoU to issue E-tickets. Passengers can book their tickets online or through mobile and then payments can be made through credit cards or bank accounts. Currently, E-ticketing service is available in 51 cities of Pakistan.

Pakistan Railway has been in financial crisis for a long time now because of mismanagement and corruption, according to the audit report published a couple of months ago. CPEC will hopefully get the railway system on the right track by upgrading and expanding the railway networks.

$8.2 billion tracks to be constructed in first phase of CPEC]($8.2 billion tracks to be constructed in first phase of CPEC)

ISLAMABAD: Some 1,872 kilometres long gate-free and signal-free railway tracks from Karachi to Peshawar costing $8.2 billion would be constructed under first phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, sources told The News.

According to official data, the project would be completed in two phases in five years by 2021 on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode. Phase-I will be completed by December, 2017 and Phase-II by the year 2021. The data showed that the work to build fence around the tracks, similar to motorway, and underpasses and overheard bridges would be initiated in first week of January.

“The railway track from Karachi to Peshawar via Kotri, Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi (including Taxila-Havelian) would be upgraded and 15 percent of the total cost of the project would be borne by Pakistan and 85 percent would be financed from relevant Chinese financial institutions under the CPEC project,” it showed.

Official documents showed that work would also involve 1,598 kilometres upgrading of existing double and single track and overhauling of 930 kilometres existing double line, construction of 676 kilometres new track from Lalamusa to Peshawar including Karachi-Kotri/Hyderabad with UIC-60 rail, construction of tunnels and bridges and culverts along with allied structures and facilities.

APP adds: Islamabad: Railway tracks from Karachi to Peshawar would be made gate-free and signal-free under the next phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

According to Geo news channel a fence would be built around the tracks similar to Motorway and an underpass or overhead bridge would be built at every gate on the tracks, the sources informed. Work on the project would be initiated from January.

The first phase of the project would focus on railway tracks between Rawalpindi and Peshawar. The signaling system in Pakistan Railways would also be upgraded under the project.

According to the sources the purpose behind making railway tracks gate-free and signal-free is to make train journeys safer and faster for the public. The fencing and bridges would also lead to a reduction in accidents.

Once the project is completed the tracks would be able to accommodate high-speed trains. The railways authorities have completed the planning for the project, the sources added.

o bhai yeh kaam (renewal of sleepers) 1861 se hor raha hay. yeh sleepers, ‘Sleeper Factory Sukkur’ main bantay hain. Supply of RCC sleepers from Sukkur and Kotri is very old phenomenon. Why is your minister taking credit of these old practices of PR? I know you have no response to my revelations as you will continue to post digital photos with a false accomplishments like above, most probably paid by promotional wing of PR to butter your railway minister.

Re: Pakistan Railways expects Rs 6 Billion More Income

The new construction of tracks which seems to an impossible task ($8.1 Billions) should be constructed by Chinese Engineers and experts warna 80% of this amount will go to the pockets of your leaders and their pet dogs working under them.

Re: Pakistan Railways expects Rs 6 Billion More Income

The Jewel of Lahore : Lahore Junction Railway Station (1859 - 1860)

**Lahore Railway Station was literally the first purpose-built British imperial building, its foundation stone haying been laid by John Lawrence in 1859, and it cost half a million rupees to build.

Lahore Railway Station is representative of typical grand British architecture in the Indo-Pak subcontinent during the British Raj. The railway network established by the British was very extensive and is one of their lasting contributions to the culture and infrastructure of this region. With its great round bastions and tall machicolated towers, Lahore station may look as if it is the product of some short lived collaboration between the Raj and the Disney Corporation, but it was in fact built in deadly earnest.

The twin towers look as innocent as Swiss cuckoo clocks, but they were designed to be bomb- proof, while the loop holes across the facade are not the mock arrow slits they appear to be, but placements for Maxim guns, which were drawn down carefully designed lines of fire. Even the cavernous train sheds could, in an emergency, be sealed with huge sliding metal doors, turning the whole complex into a colossal fortified bunker.

According to its architect, William Brunton, the whole station had a “defensive character” so that “a small garrison could secure it against enemy attack”.

The station was built in the immediate aftermath of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. So the building was deliberately designed to function both as a station and as a fort. At the time one of the major concerns was the safety of railway employees, and accordingly, the building was designed to provide accommodation for “refuge of the Railway staff and others in any time of danger.”

Constructed entirely of brick masonry, its quaint square turrets rise above the main structure and carry large clocks which could be visible from great distances, once again underscoring the importance of time that an industrialized society such as England was keen to inculcate in the local public.

The earliest of the Raj structures of Lahore, few railway stations can present a picturesque view such as this. The station provides a grand setting for the important railway junction that Lahore became ever since the first train was run to Amritsar in 1860. Later, when linkages had been established with Bombay, Calcutta and Peshawar, and in 1889 with Karachi, Lahore contributed significantly to making Karachi the largest exporter of wheat by transporting wheat from Punjab’s canal colonies.

****During the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878), Lahore played a key role by facilitating the passage of 75 trains every 24 hours to carry troops and provisions to the war destination.

Its architect, William Brunton was particularly pleased with the masonry, which he called ‘the best in the world’ and which he felt confident could survive even full-scale howitzer fire. When Lord John Lawrence broke the earth on the future site of Lahore Railway Station in February 1859, the silver shovel he used bore the Latin motto ‘tam bello quam pace’- better peace than war. The motto was appropriate because the railways did play a vital part in creating a peaceful, united India. The irony was that less than a century later, they were also the instrument that made its irreparable division feasible. The biggest migration in human history was only possible because thousands of people could be moved from one end of the country to another by rail.
