Pakistan players receive pay rise

Suhael Ahmed - June 2, 2003

At a time other cricket boards are announcing pay cuts and freezes, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed that it is awarding its players pay rises of up to 25%.

The players will now earn around Rs50,000 (approx US$875) per month compared to Rs28,000 previously, while senior players like skipper Rashid Latif could pocket up to Rs200,000 as opposed to Rs158,000 previously.

Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, chairman of the PCB, revealed that a proposal from Rashid Latif that all players should receive the same, regardless of seniority, was considered unjustified. The previous slab system would continue with senior players who have played more matches being paid more while the juniors would be compensated according to appearances in Tests and ODIs.

Apart from the pay hike, another 25% bonus would be paid to all players following a win in a Test. Zia went on to say that the PCB wanted to give players their due rights rather than deprive them monetarily.

In an earlier briefing on May 1, Rameez Raja, the chief executive of the PCB, had said: “We are very close to finalizing the central contracts that will be awarded to a select number of players. Minor modifications are to be made in the contracts before they are awarded.”

Jump from 28k to 50k is not 25%, its more than 75%!!!! and from 158k to 200k would be more than 25%.

I wish I can get such a raise :(

I should become a cricket player.

$875 per month is very low, I used to make this amount when I was 18.

World tours + Five star hotels with swimming pools + Fame + Girls+more(bonuses, sponsors)

Did you have any of those when you were 18 ? :D

ps: Srinath was sighted with a bollywood actres, hum say achay to srinath rahay, anyways bad example just felt like saying it

Good players earn most of their money from sources other than their salary.

County cricket pays a nice amount. Then there is ad appearances, where players like Akram make a bundle. Then sponsorships also.

I read somewhere that Tendulkar’s contracts are worth about US$ 28 Million. I am sure his salary is chump change compared to that amount.

Tendulkar is an exception in terms of how much he commands in sponsorship....But why are cricketers paid monthly salary? why not just pay for what games they get selected to the 21 or 16?

Do they get paid even for months when there's no game?

I hope they get paid for all months. How do you want them to earn a living when there is no cricket? Start working in a bank so they get out of shape and build pot bellies when cricket season comes around?

but 50 k in pakistan is tooo much.. plus.. they don't play every month.. they get even more money when they play well n the team wins the game :)

Looks like the present board's bringing about quite the positive implementations. Even though they've been hit quite hard financially in receent times. Good to see.

anyone know about domestic plyr figures?

instead of monthly basis, they should get paid from contract, similiar to what ACB and ECB does to its cricketers.

they select 20 players each year, and they get a contract, and they get paid according to that contract.
