Pakistan players pay for World Cup failure
Reuters - 27 March 2003
Members of the Pakistan World Cup squad have been docked half their earnings from the tournament because of their poor performances.
“This was an agreement signed before the World Cup and the players agreed to performance-based terms and conditions,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman Samiul Hasan told Reuters on Thursday.
“The agreement was that if they failed to go beyond the preliminary rounds, they would face 50 per cent deductions from their total earnings from the tournament.”
Eight senior members of the World Cup squad have been dropped for next month’s Sharjah tournament, including captain Waqar Younis, the experienced Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saeed Anwar, and fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.
Pakistan won only two matches in the World Cup’s first round, against minnows Namibia and the Netherlands, losing to Australia, England and India as they failed to get past the tournament’s opening stage for the first time since 1975.
Arey ab kitni saza denge bhai aaplog, Kaptani waapas le li, Team se Nikal diya, Ab Paise bhi nahi de rahe ab. Kya saara Gussa Players par hi niklega ?? General Saheb ki koi responsibility nahin hai kya ?? Had ho gayee yaar. It is the worst treatment a player can get. Whoever made them sign an agreement is an IDIOT.

This is the agreement they signed, now it was upto them to question such agreement. I don't think it can be considered as "saara gussa" since it was thought well ahead of beginning of the tournament.

How is Anil Kumble doing?. I heard he is under a gag order from Kuptaan Ganguly.

Funguy - Where does Anil Kumble come in between ?? If you cant contribute to a topic better stay away from it.
My reaction would have been same, If Indian Player were treated same way after NZ loss or any other loss.
BTW :- Anil Kumble is still in the team, Got to share the prize money despite playing only 3 games. He is on the bench because Ganguly has more confidence in Harbhajan.

CL yaar - Does this accountability stop at players ?? Dont the officials need to take a hint and resign before handing out the punishment to the players ? Does Mr. Zia have the moral right to do so ?

Asif, first of all you are forgetting, Zia belongs to "Army" which is "unaccountable" in Pakistan. Second if rest of PCB didn't have any such agreement/contract then they don't have to follow, though morally they all should "resign" but oh well who doesn't love his seat/money?
well yeh agreement pehle hua tha to is say ab behes karne ka ya ghussa hone ki koi baat nai.. agar players ko problem hoty to on ko pehle complain karni chayay thi..
aur itni buri tarah say harne ko kis ne kaha thaa.. acha khailtay to sab kuch milta.. ab bhugtain baith kar :)
That not much money !!!
They are getting much more. That was prize money just for being runnersup. There are few more..like each win in grouo stage, super six and Semis.

Fair enough, the didn't deserve full match fee.

What do you mean, They didn't deserve full match fee ?? These players went there and played for entire duration of the match. They deserve every penny of it. If we go by your logic, Bangladesh players should not be paid at all. PCB is doing a great disservice to the players. It just shows what kind of pathetic losers are in charge of PCB.
Winning and losing are part of the game. And If accountability is the issue, start it from the PCB chairman, Selectors and every other member in the PCB anddeduct 50% of their salaries. Why just players ? These Board members are enjoying foreign trips at the expense of players. What do they do apart from passing orders to the players ?

They were going to be richly rewarded if they played well and they were happy enough to agree to that, so they can't really complain can they?
Maybe they should have agreed to a set fee to begin with.

I agree.but why cant they have same kinda arrangement for borad members.
Well only Gen. Tauqir is still there. The selection committe have been sacked (rightly) and I don't think Zia interfered too much with actual matters on the field so I'm not sure how much responsibilty he can take.
Whether he should be there is a different matter, but I'm not sure he's to blame for the poor WC campaign.
Axing the players on the basis of their performance is absolutely fine, But not giving their full match fee is wrong.
But with PCB ruled by the Army hawks, Did the Players have a choice of not signing the Contract ??? Army officers are having fun at players' expense while players are made to suffer. I wouldn't be sureprisde If tomorrow a player(Indian,Pakistani or any other) who was not paid for his match fee takes money to fix matches.
