Pakistan per capita income could be over 1000 dollars in next year

I believe that Pakistan GNP in July 2007 (for the year 2006-2007) would be around 9000 billion rupees or around 148 billion dollars. Per capita income would be around 925 dollars. Next year (2007-2008), most likely Pakistan per capita income would go above 1000 dollars (GNP of around 165 billion dollars). I believe that if that would happen (as it is most likely), it would be a great achievement for Pakistan economy.

When President Musharraf came to power in 1999, Pakistan per capita was 468 dollars (that is after taking rebasing into account). Thus in 8 years, from 1999 to 2007, Pakistan per capita has doubled in dollars.

In comparison, for the year 1990-1991, 8 years before 1998-1999, per capita income of Pakistan was 424 dollars. Thus in 8 years of civilian rule (1991-999), per capita income increased from 424 dollars to 468 dollars; or 44 dollars in 8 years (not for one year but for 8 years combined :D)

More surprising is that, the figures of Nawaz and BB rule is taken using official exchange rate for dollar (Rs 46.80 in 1999), even though in open market the rate was much higher (over Rs 50 in 1999). Today, per capita income is worked out on market exchange rate of around Rs 61 (that means, difference of 2007 per capita in comparison to 1999 per capita is much more than figures shows).

If one takes into account whole of corrupt political period from 1988-1999, the figures are as insignificant as for those 8 years mentioned above. The year Zia-ul-Haq died (1988); per capita income was 395 dollars. That shows that during 11 years of corrupt political rule, from 1988-1999, per capita increased from 395 to 468 dollars. This is an increase of 73 dollars in 11 years (or around 18 percent in 11 years). How pathetic

hurrah for musharraf and shaukat

Re: Pakistan per capita income could be over 1000 dollars in next year

Mere GDP growth rates cannot be used to guage the progress of nations, especially developing ones.

I. GDP Treats Crime, Divorce & Natural Disasters as Economic Gain

II. GDP Takes No Account of Income Distribution

III. GDP Treats the Depletion of Natural Capital as Income

IV. GDP Increases with Polluting Activities & Again with Clean-Ups

V. GDP Ignores the Nonmarket Economy of Household & Community

VI. GDP Ignores the Drawbacks of Living on Foreign Assets
