Pakistan, A Traditional Ally
TEHRAN, Jan. 1–President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday stressed the importance of bolstering friendly relations with Pakistan, saying Tehran and Islamabad have long been traditional allies in the region. The president made the remark in a meeting with outgoing Pakistani Ambassador in Tehran Iqbal Ahmad Khan while referring to friendly and brotherly relations between the two sides, IRNA reported. “There is no gap between the two nations and the governments of Iran and Pakistan. Great potentials in cultural, political, economic and regional fields connect the two nations,“ he said. Ahmadinejad pointed to the enthusiasm of the Iranian government and nation for providing relief to the quake-hit people of Pakistan and said, “We sympathize with the Pakistani nation and share their sadness and difficulties.“
The president referred to his meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on the fringes of the UN General Assembly session and the summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference and expressed Tehran’s readiness to expand ties with Islamabad in all fields. Ahmad Khan, for his part, voiced the determination of his country’s officials to promote ties with Iran and called for consolidation of bilateral cooperation. He appreciated Iran’s humanitarian aid for the quake-stricken people in Pakistan.
