Pakistan off-spinner to appear before disciplinary committee

Pakistan Test off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will appear before a disciplinary committee for allegedly berating coach Javed Miandad and manager Haroon Rasheed, an official of the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Friday.

The 27-year-old off-spinner’s alleged comments were made in telephone calls with Miandad and Rasheed after Pakistan’s cricket selectors dropped him from the ongoing two-Test series against South Africa.

“It’s a serious matter and Saqlain (Mushtaq) has been asked to appear before the disciplinary committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board on Oct. 29,” said chief executive PCB Ramiz Raja.

“We will take a lenient view if he (Saqlain) apologizes keeping in mind his services for the Pakistan cricket,” Raja said.

It wasn’t clear what punishment Mushtaq faces. Mushtaq, who also plays for Surrey in the English county championship, has taken 207 wickets in 48 Tests. His 169 one-day internationals have fetched the off-spinner 288 wickets with an impressive average of 21.79.

He last played a Test match last month against Bangladesh at Multan, which Pakistan won by one wicket.

I dont if I want to believe that. Is the source credible? haven't seen this on any other news site.

Miandad spurns apology

LAHORE, Oct 27: Pakistan coach Javed Miandad has said as he had reported the case of breach of indiscipline incurred by Saqlain Mushtaq to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and would not accept an apology from the off-spinner.

Miandad had reported to PCB Saqlain had used abusive language against him, alleging the coach was instrumental in being left out of the two Test series against South Africa.

Miandad said Saqlain had called him twice to apologize for his behaviour, but now it was upto the PCB disciplinary committee to take a decision. Miandad claimed that he had repeatedly clarified it that he had no say in the selection of the team as it was purely the task of the selectors, but even then he was facing the wrath of the omitted players. PCB disciplinary committee headed by Justice (retd) Ameer Alam will hear the case.

Bad times for Saqlain Mushtaq…

unfortunate incident. Saqlain showing immaturity in using foul language agsint miandad but Miandad should forgive him, after all the kid ahs played a lot under his coaching.

Agreed, Saqi was wrong but Miandad should accept the apology once it's been made. Saqi must have been feeling pretty low with his international career pretty much in the balance. Not easy to take for a once great bowler.

I fear Saqi's career is more or less over.

Well he hasn't performed for so long it's hardly a surprise if he doesn't play again. He was out-bowled by Rafique against BD.

Saqlain faces disciplinary action

Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq could be banned on Wednesday for verbally abusing national coach Javed Miandad.

Saqlain is due to appear before the Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee in Lahore to face charges.

**Miandad and manager Haroon Rasheed have brought the complaint after Saqlain telephoned them about being dropped for the Test series against South Africa.

Miandad said Saqlain had apologised and he would ask the committee to take a lenient view. **

He told the Reuters news agency: **"He came to me and apologised for his behaviour which he says was out of sheer frustration.

“I have accepted his apology but now it is up to the disciplinary committee to take a decision.” **

Under the PCB code of conduct, if found guilty of the charges of misbehaviour Saqlain could face a fine of up to 50,000 rupees (£514) or a ban of three domestic matches.

Saqlain has been selected for just one test against Bangladesh and a one-dayer against South Africa this home season.

I am with Miandad on this one. Saqlain acted like an imbecile and must be punished like one. Let the disciplinary committee set a trend here. If we let him go this time, we might have Mushatq Ahmed calling up Miandad tomorrow. Hand him the maximum penalty, six months ban or heavy fine, or both. This is low, but he isn't much use as a player anyway. Might as well use his example to keep the youngsters in check.

Saqlain did himself a favour by apologising to Miandad

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday let bowler Saqlain Mushtaq off with a reprimand for verbally abusing coach Javed Miandad.

PCB legal advisor Asghar Haider said a disciplinary committee had decided against a stiffer punishment after Saqlain apologised.

Saqlain scolded Miandad on the phone after being dropped for the recent Test series against South Africa.

“They have not fined or banned him,” Haider confirmed.

“The committee reached the decision after Saqlain apologised to Javed Miandad for his behaviour and also to the committee members.”

But Haider said PCB chairman Tauqir Zia, who is abroad, could still take further action against spinner Saqlain if he felt the need to do so.

Miandad admitted Saqlain had apologised for his outburst.

He said: “He came to me and apologised for his behaviour which he says was out of sheer frustration.”

“I have accepted his apology.”

Under the PCB code of conduct, Saqlain could have faced a fine of up to 50,000 rupees (£514) or a ban of three domestic matches if he were found guilty.

Saqlain has been selected for just one Test against Bangladesh and a one-dayer against South Africa this home season.
